good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs headquarters in new york. i'm meg oliver in for anne-marie green. this morning tropical storm cindy is bearing down on the gulf coast expecting to make landfall tonight. cindy is moving southwest packing 67-mile-per-hour winds. right now tropical storm warnings are posted from texas to the alabama/florida border and metropolitan new orleans. state of emergency has been declared in alabama. visitors at gulf shores are being warned to stay out of the surf. new orleans is preparing for what mayor mitch landrieu calls a very serious event. louisiana national guard has dispatched highwater vehicles and helicopters to flood-prone

sin d is expected to drench an area from louisiana to florida with flood-producing rain. eric fisher chief meteorologist at our boston station wbz has details. >> well, cindy has already made its presence known. very heavy reinfall, classic flooding. you see all the bright colors. those are your cold clouds, heavy rainfall. the center is down here. while the center is tracking to the north and west all of the rain is on the eastern flank of it. flash flooding on the gulf coast. that's the main impact of this storm. very heavy rainfall. fresh water from all that rain as it crawls off to the north and northwest over the next kurple of days. be cautious of any flood flooding and be alert of any flash flood warning mts the heaviest in and around new orleans. of course, a tough time draining that water in new orleans. the other story continues. the heat in the southwest. temperatures just about as hot as they were yesterday. a lot of records challenging

a slight cooldown at the end of the week by friday. fewer record highs will be set, but still very hot, right on through the workweek and into the weekend. i'm meteorologist eric fisher for cbs news. that scorching southwest heat eric talked about forced dozens of flight cancellations in phoenix and strained the power grid. about 50 flights were canceled yesterday in phoenix because it was too hot for the planes to on wrat. california firefighters are battling a fire in the mountains each los angeles angeles. 1,200 acres have been burned. the fire is contained. travis kalanick helped found uber in 2009. his leadership has been questioned for months following reports of a workplace culture where sexual harass mbltd and

hena daniels is here with more on that. good morning. >> good morning, meg. it does not appear a decision is imminent. today the u.n. and top officials will visit washington. the u.s. has been pressing china to curtail its near clear program. yesterday president trump tweeted he appreciates china's efforts but that it has not worked out. the death of american student otto warmbier provoked outrage and fueled efforts to rein in the north. a vigil was held on the university of virginia campus last night where he attended school. he went to north korea as a tourist and ended up spending nearly 17 months in prison before being released in a coma. senator john mccain said warmbier was murdered and people should think twice about traveling to north korea. >> well, i think there should at least be a form for them to fill out that says if i go to north korea, i understand i'm

the american government responsible. >> warmbier's funeral will be held tomorrow. meg? >> hena daniels for us. thank you. senate majority leader mitch mcconnell says he expects to have a draft of the gop bill to replace obamacare tomorrow, but the process has not been smooth. they're taking the counsel to task for writing the legislation behind closed doors. mcconnell told nancy cordes there's a reason the democrats were shut out. >> they made it clearer ler they were not interested in participating in it. they have no interest whatsoever, so it makes sense. >> so are they invited into the conference? >> no, but they've made it clear they're not interested in helping. >> 50 of the 52 republican senators must approving the bill for it to pass. >> n

the killing of philando castillo by a police officer is sparking a new wave of youtd rage. one minneapolis community leader called it a 21st century lynching. mireya villarreal reports. >> reporter: the newly released video shows yanez pulling castilk castillo over. >> i have a firearm. >> don't reach for it. don't pull it out. don't put it out. >> reporter: within 90 seconds of making the stop the officer filed seven shots. castillo's girlfriend diamond reynolds was in the passenger seat. >> i told him not to reach for it. >> you told him to get his i.

congressman scalise and the othering made it through. >> scalise and the other four victims are all expected to recover. the park where the shooting happened last week was reopened yesterday during a ceremony in alexandria. an oscar winning actor announced his retiermtd and a retired attorney general gets legal help. the "washington post" reports that attorney general jeff sessions has retained a personal attorney. sessions is under fire for his contacts with russia officials last year while he was an adviser to the trump campaign. the lawyer previously worked for the justice department. the "los angeles times" reports the arrests of four more cadets. the investigation of stolen lapd cruisers. seven cadets ranging in age from 14 to 18 are now charged. one of the cars had been missing for nearly a month. investigators think the teens made at least one traffic stop while
