attacked. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne marie green. this morning in germany, president trump and russian president vladimir putin will hold their first face-to-face meeting. it takes place amidst the g20 summit where terror and climate top the agenda. but the agenda for the trump-putin meeting may focus on u.s. elections and sharp difference of russian action in syria and ukraine. those protests set to grow today as 20,000 german police officers try to control the violence. but inside, there is likely to be tension. police in

protesters while cars were set on fire nearby. the scene played out for hours as police used pepper spray and batons ahead of the g20 summit. president trump met with angela merkel on thursday to discuss the topics on the agenda, most notably, north korea's test on the u.s. with a ballistic missile. the president said all options are on the table. >> i don't like to talk about what i have planned, but i have pretty severe things we're thinking about. >> reporter: the president also had dinner with the leaders of japan and south korea to talk about jim jong-un. he met with vladimir putin for the first time. putin put an op-ed talking about his trade policies, right after he asked to

the white house will not say, though, whether the tough talk would extend to russia's meddling in the 2016 election. >> you can't go out there and talk about how important it is for democracies to work together while at the same time not challenging putin for a direct attack on the u.s. political system. >> reporter: secretary of state rex tillerson and his russian counterpart are expected to be in attendance when mr. trump and putin meet. the exchange is slated to last half an hour. the president is also expected to meet today with the leaders of mexico and great britain. he will sit down separately with china's president at some point to discuss north korea. anne marie? >> jane ferguson in london. thank you so much, jane. in washington, the government ethics director who challenged president trump over his ties to business resigned. as juliana goldman reports, mr. schaub

trump releases his american holdings, the people can never be sure he's acting on behalf of the american country. >> reporter: walter schaub has been a unique voice. as ethics chief, he's taken on his boss, president trump, publicly. he says that unless president trump eliminates all financial ties to his businesses, the american people can never be certain his policy decisions are based on what's best for the country. do you think the president and his family are using the office to enrich themselves? >> i can't know what their intention is. i know that the effect is that there is an appearance that the businesses are profiting from his occupying the presidency. >> reporter: but at this point, it sounds like you're saying you can't be sure. >> you can't be sure. it almost doesn't matter whether they are profiting or not. america should have the right to

leaders are. >> reporter: in previous administrations, the office of government ethics operated below the radar. schaub changed that shortly after the election when he unleashed a series of sarcastic tweets getting the president to divest his assets. >> what i was trying to do was, a, use the media i saw him communicating in. >> reporter: but he never spoke with the president, and schaub said the white house counsel dismissed his concerns. ultimately mr. trump handed control of his private businesses to his son and noted, there are no conflict of interest laws for a president. his attorney also said he couldn't sell off his assets because he would lose money. >> i have no sympathy for that. he's in a position where he's going to have to send young men and women to die in combat, potentially. or risk their lives, at least. they're paying a much higher price. so no, it's not

for somebody to incur a bit of a financial loss if he has to sell something off. >> reporter: trump got a job with a non-partisan ethics group and thought he could have a greater impact in government. they said they appreciated his service. julianne a goeweuliana goldman,. a boeing 757 was en route from seattle to beijing after trouble started an hour into the flight. a flight attendant got punched. other passengers tried to help. >> he broke two bottles of wine on his head. i tried to choke him and he threw me off like a rag doll. >> reporter: the flight landed safely and two people were treated for non-life-threatening inju.

custody. the fbi is investigating but there is nothing to say this is an act of terrorism. a georgia mother killed two of had her children and their father. she is charged with five counts of murder. she called 911 to report the killings. another child was stabbed and in serious condition. elizabeth martinez is cooperating. bill cosby will be retried on assault charges in november. he was acquitted by a hung jury last month. he is accused of knocking women out before sexually assaulting them. he is accused of giving them pills before sexual encounters over the last 20 years. amtrak passengers are being warned to expect lengthy delays after a new jersey

derailed at new york's penn station. new jersey transit officials say it was a slow derailment. about two hours after the derailment, passengers were moved to a rescue train. no injuries are reported, but at least six trains were reported. there is a two-hour repair project set for monday. major disruptions are expected. an officer in new york has offered to help charlie gard, a terminally ill british baby. he was born with a rare condition. doctors planned to remove him from life support. his parents want to try an experimental drug in this country but they were denied by the british courts. new york presbyterian hospital and columbia irving medical center said they would admit gard but only if he could be transmitted safely and if he received approval for the experimental treatment.

attention from the pope and president trump, who tweeted the u.s. would be delighted to help. coming up on the morning news, new trouble for the education secretary. betsy devos is being sued over protection. and he ran for his life. a professional runner escapes two bears. this is the cbs morning news. but little miss puffytail can never forget. investigators say operating systems have not been compromised. the government sees no threat to public safety. and the "washington post" says education secretary betsy devos is being sued for suspending some obama era rules. the state was called by the united states and the district of columbia. it calls for coercion of four private colleges. they said the rules are flawed. the sun-sentinel news said the tennis star venus williams caused a fatal car crash last month. the black box caused the accident from williams' car. the tennis star has not been charged. a purse snatcher dragged a bottom with the getaway car. the video was caught on security

the woman gave chase and got her purse back but the robbers got her wallet. a runner in maine said he outsprinted two bears. he dashed to a house wednesday when he spotted them during his workout. >> my initial instincts told me the best thing for you to do is to get to that house. i was not going to fight him. >> wildlife experts say the man did exactly the wrong thing. they recommend shouting, clapping and waving your arms to make yourself look imposing. it worked for him, anyway. still ahead, cleaner energy on the road. grants make a push to drive out gas in diesel cars.

roxana saberi is here. good morning, roxana. >> new evidence that hiring is slowing down. they added 140,000 jobs last month, fewer than expected. they lowered their estimate for jobs from april to may. they remain near 40-year lows. that leads to their biggest loss in more than six weeks. the dow dropped 28 points, the nasdaq 26.2. the qvc network is buying hsn network in a deal worth over $2 billion. qvc already owns 80% of hsn stock. more shoppersuy

the tournament's chief says the dollar is the most widely adopted currency for prize money in golf. a box filled with used soccer cleats might not seem that valuable, but it was as good as gold for some haitian kids accustomed to playing barefoot. meg oliver explains how a generous family made it happen. >> reporter: for kids in hateit soccer is a way of life. he's played barefoot until this summer. a box of cleats arrived from america, giving these children the first chance to play in shoes. the idea came to light more than a thousand miles away in new jersey. every week they hold board meetings with the chief around the kitchen table. 14 hard-working cousins 8 to 17 years old started a charity collecting used cleats for

ended at about 1:30 this morning all because the team postponed the start for showers that didn't start until two hours later. oops. who's our -- who's their meteorologist? >> they obviously weren't listening to allyson. >> they did arrive a little bit later. but if you use our wusa 9 app you would have known the showers were coming your way. starting off with another round of showers this morning, some showers just west of the beltway. there are some pockets of heavier rain kind of mixed in this, but nothing like what we had yesterday and it's not going to stick around all morning. take a look at feucht. we do see showers along 95 and through the beltway. some heavier pockets of rain as well and also some lightning strikes within this, kind of embedded, but we're not looking at severe weather, and we should stay away from any flooding concerns. later on this afternoon we have a nice breeze out of the northwest. it will be breezy at times, but still hot. and even though those winds are out of the northwest, it will still be on the humid side today. the humidity is not going to byop until saturday night.

we're not done with our rain chances just yet. later on tonight, probably after the nats game, we will have another round of showers. we'll talk about that coming up. elen. >>reporter: allyson, i know it's friday, but we're still feeling the effects of thursday on the road. a tree down on g.w. parkway between two lane and morningside lane. that's where you'll find that tree. they are just sending crews out there now. so we should hopefully get an update soon on how long it will take to remove that tree. it's a lot of construction work out there. don't forget about the construction on minnesota avenue between a street and southeast and bening road. plus that closure on pennsylvania avenue near northwest heading westbound. that's between 26th and 28th street in northwest. also amtrak commuters, you're told to expect some extensive delays at america's busiest train station. that's thanks to a minor derailment of a new jersey transit train last night at new york's penn station. now, while the derailment happened at a slow speed and no one was hurt, the 180 passengers had to be transferred to another train just to

destination. amtrak is already scheduled to start a big track repair project there on monday. jan. >> all right, ellen, thank you. a group of people headed to china are getting a little bit of a late start on their trip thanks to an emergency right after takeoff >> imagine hearing what we're about to tell you. good news police say this does not appear to be terrorism related, but passengers on a delta plane say it was a first- class passenger causing all the problems right after takeoff from seattle. witnesses say this man went to and from the bathroom, headed for the exit door at one point and then a flight attendant tried to stop him. he punched the flight attendant. then the passengers and attendants grabbed him. they had to even break wine bottles over his head. >> he started yelling for help. he turned the wheelchair over in the middle of the airport, was screaming for people to help him, just being belligerent. >> somebody working had blood on their shirt. >> yeah. so the passengers heard the commotion. there was even an announcement that a doctor was needed. the plane turned around, landed

9:00, this is underdoing it. expect those showers to be right on top of the beltway. so if you're biking to work or doing that morning jog, your morning will be impacted with some of those showers. now, we dry out for a lot of the day. now, this is not until 8:30, hopefully at the nats game, they wait until the rain actually arrives to delay the game. the showers will arrive later on tonight. a lot of them will be off to the north and through maryland and they'll start to fizzle out off to the south of d.c. for tomorrow, saturday, saturday is going to be hotter and kind of our transition day into that picture perfect day i've been promising on sunday. we could have a couple of showers on saturday afternoon. this is not going to be a washout. this is 3:00 in the afternoon. so just be cautious of that. but that front that's bringing those showers will drop our humidity for a gorgeous sunday. still hot and humid today, into the upper 80s and into the low 90s. elen, what's going on? >>reporter: well, if sunday is not picture perfect, i'm going to be a little upset. holding you to it, allyson. we still have a tree down on the roads. not sure if it's left over from
