57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the controversy over donald trump jr.'s meeting is not going aw away. the president returned to twitter to defend his eldest son. meanwhile the senate republican bill to replace the affordable health care act faces uncertainty, and don champion is here in new york. good morning, don. >> good morning, anne-marie. was adamant in saying there was nothing illegal about donald trump jr.'s meeting last year. president trump promised action in the week ahead on trade, the military, and security. it's the latest attempt to change the intent to policy issues. >> there's nothing illegal about that meeting. >> yesterday jay sekulow, the

defendant's lawyer defended trump junior's meeting that included the top campaign staff linked to the kremlin. also hammered home the president was not aware of the meeting. >> he did not participate inny a of this. >> critics say the story is raising more questions than answers. >> first he said no, the meeting never happened. >> the president will also have to wait a bit longer to repeal and replace the health care. they say their timeline has been pushed back. they're waiting for senator john mccain who's recovering from surgery to return. >> the more the bill's out there the more conservatives are going to discover this not repeal. >> the budget office which was scheduled to release its new analysis today now says the analysis has been delayed. >> and president trump

a new league facing job approval numbers. only 36% of the americans polled approve of the job he's doing. >> don champion here in new york. thank you so much, don. ahead on "cbs this morning," we will ask dan senor about what the health care vote delay mean for its prospects of passing. well, the search resumes this morning following a deadly flash flood at a popular arizona swimming area. at least nine people including five children were killed saturday when a six foot wall of water slammed through a narrow canyon north of phoenix. the victims, a group of family and friends had no warning. the body of water was so powerful some bodies were slam found two miles down the river. one man is still missing. chris martinez has more. >> reporter: a family outing at

ott saturday. on saturday they were caught in a sudden flags flood in on the toe national forest 90 miles north of phoenix. >> one witness said they heard a tremendous roar and the next thing they knew, the water and debris was on top of them and they were scrambling for their lives. >> reporter: the sudden flow of water came more than an hour after a half an a thunderstorm rolled through eight miles upstream. the runoff emptied into the canyon and began picking up speed. >> the water that was created from this graduated from the burn area, the highland fire. >> there's a lot of debris piles that we're trying to check through and make sure there's nobody in there, but it's just taken us a while. we've got probably five miles of river to search. >> according to officials, the search and rescue mission will continue until everyone is accounted for. chris martinez,

dozens of wildfires continue to burn in at least ten western states. one of the most destructive is burning in santa barbara county. that's just northwest of los angeles. the whittier fire has destroyed nearly 50 buildings including 16 homes. the fire has been burning for more than a week, consuming more than 189,000 acres. a state of emergency has been declared and nearly 3,000 residents have been forced to evacuate. and fire officials in hawaii say a modern sprinkler system would have saved lives in a honolulu high-rise apartment. three people were killed in the fire that broke out friday afternoon. the fire started on the 26th floor and it quickly spread. many residents didn't even realize the fire had started until they opened their doors. some families now have no place to go. >> right now we're completely homeless. the three of us, me, my husband, and my mom. >> it's the saddest feeling from the place y

news that china's economy grew faster than expected is likely to push stocks and commodity prices higher today. last week the dow jones gain 2d 27 points, the s&p gained 34 and the nasdaq had its best first sixes of the year since 2009. wells fargo is spinning off its small businesses. that's according to the finance cham times. the plans to reduce the numbers of businesses is part of the effort to restore investor confidence following its fake account scandal. the war from movie ticket sales was won by "war for planet of the apes." the latest in the franchise took in an estimated $57.5 million

in the street. officers found that guy unresponsive just after 4:00 yesterday morning. he was lying in the road near 60th and roanoke avenues in hyattsville. he died at the hospital later. medical examiners are still trying to figure out who he is. all we know at this point is he was a hispanic man in his 30s. investigators in fairfax county trying to find out why a young woman killed her mom and then herself. both were found dead friday afternoon. detectives believe 23-year-old helen hargin shot and killed her mom, 63-year-old pamela hargin before killing herself. a hot button issue on the table, today is a workday for school board members in the county, but they are expected to discuss renaming j.e.b. stuart high school. the topic is on the agenda for 1:30 this afternoon. the news at 4:30 starts right now. this is wake up washington

jeffcoat. you can see mike, yay. >> woo hoo. >> he's back this morning, he's ready to go with his coffee this morning. let's jump right into the forecast. after a break from all that extreme heat, temperatures on the rise. we begin with first alert meteorologist melissa nord. >> we're going to see more mid- 90s coming in this week. i don't think it's going to be quite as hot as a couple of days from last week, but 95 with high humidity is still hot in my book. it's a little more muggy out there than the past couple of days. in d. c. only dropped down to 77 degrees. some of our suburbs are in the 60s this morning. you factor in the humidity, with the exception of the patuxent river which is clearly off because it says it feels like it's 92, and that is not the case, everybody else feels like they're in the 60s and 70s with a little more muggy air mass. today we do have thunderstorms returning to the forecast. it's not going to be widespread. they will not be as strong as
