safety administration says the number of complaints and injuries linked to possible carbon monoxide leaks is much higher than previously thought. kris van cleave first reported on this issue back in february. he's in washington with new details on the government's expanding investigation. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. thousands of skplanlts have been filed with nhtsa and ford promising nhtsa to investigate 2016 and 2017 explorers like this one. this police explorer was badly damaged in a crash after they say the driver passed out. >> we test heard level of carbon monoxide and her levels came out near legal. >> reporter: yesterday that officer filed suit against ford. and many other models 2011

2017 shows carbon monoxide appears to be seeping into their vehicles. 2,700 complaints have been lodged against the automaker and 41 people have reported injuries like police officer brian mcdowell who crashed into a tree in 2015 after passing out behind the wheel. >> i went out just like that. >> just like that. >> or officer lahood whose dash cam was rolling as he tried to call for help. lahood was first of 18 police officers to be treated for carbon monoxide exposure. the city has removed f 7 of its explorers from service after they set off carbon monoxide carbon monoxide detectors. the police union said all 4,039 need to be off the street by the end of the week. in 2015, 48% were ford

's recurring far too often. and so i hoped that it could perhaps invite a dialogue encourage a bridge and an incredible racial divide in the country. >> did it feel personal to you, anthony? >> it's funny. being a parent of little boys, you try to do work that they can watch and relate and learn from, and when i read the script and read green in that character specifically, i knew kathryn would give me that. >> how did you go about finding characters to incorporate into the mood? >> predominantly i used court records and

got from that, so a tremendous amount of research. it was, i thought, a really tremendous screenplay. and also i met with real-life people who were involved in this incident. there was melvin who's in the movie and hannah murray is the character of julie who is a real character julie hisle who is with me on the set every day and then larry reed who plays the member of a motown group called the dramatics. hearing their rendition of the situation and the horror that they went through really galvanized my determination to tell the story. >> could detroit happen today? it seems all far too likely in many respects. but i'm really encouraged by a conversation. there was a screening last night on capitol hill hosted by representative conyers
