down. north korea has issued a new threat against the u.s. in the latest exchange over the north's nuclear program. here at home lawmakers are taking sides ore whether president trump's warning of fire and fury went too far. wendy gillette is here with the latest. good morning, wendy. >> good morning, anne-marie. the countr defense minister said today japan could shoot down missiles if north korea fires them at the u.s. territory of guam, but some experts deny japan has that capability. the back-and-forth heated exchanges between much of the world and north korea continue. the latest to weigh in, south korea, warned they'll receive a stern and strong military >>sponse if they act.

his sternest warning yet earlier this week, it's a question of whether it was too incendiary. >> i can't believe he did that. >> i don't have a concern about inflaming anything because all the inflammation is coming from this crazy guy in north korea. >> pyongyang called president trump's statement a load of nonsense and then offered its own threat saying it's developing plans to fire four missiles on the island of guam. secretary-general mattis said, quote, noerkt korea should cease any consideration of destruction. >> outside the white house protesters kick canned off a 24-hour protest urging resolution. in response to two

launches by the sanction. yesterday the white house and the state department characterized the president's choice of words. white house press secretary sarah huckabee sanders said in a statement the words were his own and that member of the national security council were well aware of the statements before hand. that pressure on north korea is working. anne-marie? >> wendy gillette in new york. thank you so much, wendy. former ambassador to the u.n. bill richardson said pyongyang dropped the ball. >> we should have been on this lodge ago. we should consider finding ways to put more intelligence, overflights, more spies because we were caught off guard. north korea was way more advanced than our intelligence people told us.

failure that should never happen again. >> richardson is calls for diplomacy and continued sanctions against the north. investigators for the special council leading the russia inquiry executed a search warrant last month at the virginia home of paul manafort, president trump's former campaign manager. it's the most significant public step investigators have taken since special prosecutor robert mueller in may. julianna goldman reports. >> armed with search warrant statements they showed up early in the morning at paul manafort's room. jason maloney con girled the search and emphasized his client has consistently cooperated with law enforcement and other serious inquiries and did so on this occasion as well. but legal experts say it suggests rer

trust manafort. peter decidenberg is a special prosecutor. >> i think they felt they weren't getting full cooperation because if they did, they wouldn't feel the need to get a search warrant. they met with senate investigators to discuss the june 2016 meeting at trump tower by donald trump jr. to meet with a russian attorney who reportedly had damaging information on hillary clinton. typically criminal investigation, prosecutor tries to flip witnesses. in exchange for their cooperation they lessen their legal liabilities. mueller could be trying to do this now to pressure manafort. >> if they think he has information about the campaign, they would undoubtedly squeeze him for that and he would be in a position from the prosecutor's an

going on, who knew what man. >> manafort was officially part of the campaign for five months, campaign chair for just three, but this development is another sign of how close this investigation is hitting to the president's inner circle. the president's office declined to comment. a low flying russian airplane created a buzz over washington, but yesterday's surveillance flight over the capit capitol, the pentagon, and other sites was cleared by the united states under the longstanding open skies treaty. russia and the u.s. are signatories and the court allows unarmed observation flights over the entire territory of all 34 member nations. the state department has expelled two diplomats from cuba's embassy in washington. the expulsions took place in may and they follow what was a bizarre string of instruments

that left several diplomats in havana with hearing loss. and french police are searching a building that may be linked to the main suspect in the car attack that injured six soldiers. the search is happening in a suburb west of pearce, but the suspect's identity is still being verified and it's unclear whether he even lived in the building. yesterday a man rammed a bmw into a group of soldiers before being apprehended by police. the motive is unclear. 18 pittsburgh s.w.a.t. officers have been medically clearing after being expose to narcotic fentanyl. yesterday they were assisting on a raid at home when a table was knocked oh and the powder went airborne. the officers became sick. >> some had burning in their throat, they became lightheaded,

a disenter is crying foul on the trump administration. he put up a 30-foot-tall inflatable chicken within sight of the white house and it has the president's unmistakable hair style. there's a gender gap in the risk for stroke, and a key day in a fraternity hazing trial. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. off the sharp rhetoric between the u.s. and north korea. global economic strength and earnings. the dow jones lost 36 points, the s&p was town nearly a point, the nasdaq fell 18 points. oil prices spiked yesterday showing a sharp decline in crude inventory. inventory fell 6.5 million barrels last week. gasoline inventories increased. tesla is developing a long haul electric semitruck that can drive itself. reuters says tesla is getting closer to testing a prototype of the vehicle which can also move in platoons by automatically following a lead vehicle. tesla says it plans to unveil the autonomous truck next month. oprah winfrey is headed to the

the weekend forecast in just a bit. ellen. we have a problem on route 7 actually it's in the westbound lanes. so as you're leaving town. but heading anywhere by berlin turnpike the exit ramp is blocked for an accident this morning. also a water main break route 1 heading southbound just before the beltway between montgomery road and sunnyside avenue actually see that water main break work going on. no time of when it might be fixed but beltway moving just fine by route 1. thanks so much ellen for that. now is your time 4:27. are you ready for football? the redskins and ravens kick off the preseason tonight when baltimore hosts washington at m&t bank stadium. both teams are looking to improve of course after failing to make the playoffs last year. ryan zimmerman now holds the franchise record for both the nationals and the expos for most runs batted in.

land camera out there. i don't see any kind of construction new york city alert for that section but just as you pass through gainesville area, eastbound into d.c. you might've to slow down for just a -- might have to slow down for just a short period of time. we still don't have any answers as to what really happened with him. >> terrence sterling's family sat down with us a month ago asking for both answers and justice and this morning there still aren't any closer to closure. we now know that no criminal charges will be filed against the officer. he was shot and killed for riding his officer through a red light. officer brian trainer shot sterling twice after he drove that motorcycle into the police cruiser. there will be no criminal charges against that officer and d.c. mayor muriel bowser asked for his resignation. in an interview only here on 9 we sat down with mayor bowser to talk about that decision. hilary
