johnson. he had everybody contorting to try to help that one just barely drop. more golf coming your way. nick: that's fair. jim: if you thought spieth's putt for par at 17 was any good. i think we saw a better one here at 18. nick: i agree. they both looked at each other. that's fair and square. you made one, i made one for pars. jim: if you're a fan of the game, you're excited about the chance to see these two go at it some more. that was the one at the 17th. nick: wow, look at this. jim: couldn't believe how good this one was. nick: sets it off at the right-hand edge of the

that's a brillyinlt touch. dustin knew exactly what he had to do. and then watch this one. just watch the backstroke. as soft as he can and it just -- oh, wow! that was -- you know, a quarter of the ball, if that stayed up -- lucky he didn't go on my read. [laughter] jim: that was so close. to spinning out on him but he punches the air in glee. as the playoffs are headed to a playoff at the northern trust. dad kinda walked into my swing. huh? don't you mean dad kind of ruined our hawaii fund? i thud go to the thothpital. there goes the airfair. i don't think health insurance will cover all... of that. buth my fathe! without that cash from - aflac! - we might have to choose between hawaii or your face.

johnson will add it up to. one under, 69 for spieth. here's the putt that, the odds were against him. how many times you see one like this catch a little part of the cup and not quite fall but that one did. there you could see austin johnson in the background also as fired up and intense about it. there it is. what a view. nick: that was perfect weight downhill. deadweight. jim: hit the side of the cup at 3:00 and fell at 9:00. nick: might be the time we finish tonight. [laughter] jim: that's ok. nick: yeah, it's good stuff, isn't it? jim: i have nowhere to go. what could be better than this? a little sunday night drama is always a good thing. this has been a great season of golf and we had these two winning early in-on our schedule

beach and dustin the very next week at riviera and now here they are tangling all day long. now they go back and play 18 and i think it's going to look different than the first time they played it. nick: dustin want to hit it long in that rough and jordan's second shot with the 6-iron was a bit of a clanker. so you kind of predict that they're going to get it on the short grass and you can see by the hole location it gathers. if they hit a great shot they can bring it in close and the way these guys are putting, more than likely willle -- it will be a three to a four. jim: and the playoffs continue next week and we'll be handing it offer toe our friends at nbc and we wish them the best. they're there's a week off in between before ultimately getting to the tour championship. i can only hope it will be as compelling as it's been
6:06 pm
week here at the northern trust. nick: they want to get this win. and make on to get the consistency to win the fedexcup. you need a win and a couple of thirds and fourth to get yourself to east lake inside top five. then you can control your destiny. if you win at east lake in the top five, it's all yours. get a shuttle back to the 18th tee. haven't got a key for their cart. jim: why don't you give them yours? there we go. nick: dr. novario goes faster than that thing. jim:ed that be -- the odds weren't really that favorable if d.j. would have tried go ahead and give it a big lash and troy and hit the green anyway off that
6:07 pm
he goes with the, let's go ahead and try to make four the hard way. not that the wedge shot was in there close but he ended up laying up and getting his four. nick: that's a huge lesson to youngsters out there. and i keep saying, in -- if you know you can play it, go ahead and play it. he doubted he could come up safely somewhere so he's got the mental strength to wedge it down the hill and trust his wedge game, get it in close because he knew a four was -- the odds on jordan making a three were quite slim, weren't they? jim: well, the last time jordan was in a playoff, it was at t.p.c. river high lands against daniel berger. at the travelers championship and he ended it with this. we
6:08 pm
mccord was speculating he could dunk because he had some hang time. he also got in the air pretty high with michael greller right there. what a shot. one of the shots of the year. nick: lucky he didn't get hit by the rake. jim: the rake went flying, the club went flying. this will be his seventh career playoff. pit's interesting, johnson has n -- only been in one and that was at riviera at the northern trust. he lost to james hahn. nick: that's the hahn one. >> ok, guys, good luck. nick: so d.j. might throttle back. might just 3-wood it. jim: this time it will be jordan going first. draws the number. peter: he should feel comfortable with this.
6:09 pm
time around. nick: what happened with the 6-iron, peter? peter: you know, i think that was a millimeter from the hosel. nick: really? peter: it sounded awful down here. nick: if nothing's changed. the wind is just up a touch, slightly into them. just hit a nice, solid fade off the corner of the bunker. peter: pretty much on the same line as the last tee shot he hit here. and it's a lot farther and a lot more to the left where it ends up so he'll have a much shorter shot
6:10 pm
nick: duve's gone a little to the right. he's going to aim right over that bunker. he knows he can probably carry it. guaranteed to hit his fade. oh, my goodness. jim: boy, that's an aggressive line. nick: taking it over the lake. oh, wow! jim: no one's been there all week. nick: no wonder he got it wrong the first time. now he's where he hit his second shot from. jim: yeah, where he hit his third shot in regulation. nick: holy smokes. i didn't see that one coming. jim: goodness. what a rocket. back with more after this word from your local station.
6:12 pm
jim: we're back on the first playoff hole at the northern trust. with two of the biggest stars in the sport battling. jordan spieth, who won the 2015 u.s. open. dustin johnson won the 2016 u.s. open and they very nearly met in the playoff at chambers bay as you'll recall. dustin three-putting the 72nd hole and had the three or four-footer that would have had them on to a playoff back in 2015. both in the fairway here but dustin with an eye-popping tee shot that leaves him a very short shot. one that's going to feel similar similar to the third shot he played a short while ago. dottie: that tee shot traveled 341 yards. nick: oh! jim: i would t
6:13 pm
like he was a lot closer than he actually edged uping with in regulation with his third shot when he climbed the hill and saw he was that far beyond it. that could serve him well now, having a feel for that shot. nick: i quite agree that. flag is in a bowl in that corner. he has options of where to land it. dottie: being further to the right, he can also see the flagstick this time. he can see the very top of the flag itself so the depth perception will be better. nick: that's close to a divot. that must be from the pro-am. jim: they look to be about a football field apart from that view. nick: jordan's got 174. dustin's got 95. jim: a little less. dottie: we're being told that that is the longest tee shot of the entire week.
6:14 pm
nick: agren lynn, dottie. -- adren lip -- adren lynn, dottie. peter: well, jordan, will be the first to play, for sure. >> i think there's got to be some hurt. >> the wind from the left. southwest. >> i'm saying it hurts this shot. >> i agree. >> 9 behind it. >> i agree. nick: great numbers. peter: it's interesting. the number i was given was 171. >> 70? >> 68. nick: 68 to the bunkers. >> you have
6:15 pm
>> yeah, i'm pumped up but if it's not helping, left to right -- i like this. probably 75 shot, right? >> yep. nick: i do love the way when he says i am pumped up, adding that new dimension for the caddie to take onboard. jim: the adrenaline factor and he really feels comfortable with this club. peter: the wind is picking up as we speak and it's a 7-iron in his hands. jim: got a good line, just right of the flagstick. nick: a great line. ooh, my goodness. well, he missed the line of dustin. >> back fringe? jim:
6:16 pm
nick: well, good news, dustin can see flag. dottie: played very quickly. jim: it's right at'9", folks. look at this! oh, baby! nick: he knew exactly what he wanted. jim: i agree, dottie, he didn't waste any time. nick: he knew his numbers, he knew what he wanted to do, he knew how hard to hit it and he played it, wow. and off goes the saunter. yesterday, saturday, he came out and hit a half an hour of wedges, just wedges doing his distance-control work and it looks like it's really going to pay off.
6:17 pm
up the hill and we saw his reaction, the disappointment that he was beyond the hole. not as close as he had anticipated. now he sees he's got just a little uphill putt, three feet. jordan was asking our crew down in the fairway was that deep? is it back fringe? a bit of the shrug of the shoulders and he knows this is going to be one that he has to hole. nick: well, if you don't think distance makes the difference is -- difference, you just saw it right there. i mean, jordan had a good shot. couldn't control the spin, it hopped on the back fringe and justin was in complete control of that hole. powering it off the tee and getting the spin with the wedge. jim: again, the longest drive of the week at the 18th.
6:18 pm
he's looking around for some of the same markings dustin was. nick: there must be a sprinkler off the edge of the green where the contours break off of that but he's seen it off dustin. it's going to run down there pretty darn straight. dustin, i think, played a fraction of a draw and it only went left because it was perfect weight. so you have to believe jordan is going to give this -- i won't say run. he's not going to bash it but he's not going to risk leaving it short. he can't do.
6:19 pm
mind you, you get a feeling he could do it, don't you? jim: always. nick: amazing. some players you have they have no chance. this fellow you think, you never know. this really could go. jim: a flair for the dramatic. nick: didn't read the first three feet. jim: no, it was left all the way. nick: yeah. just came out -- jim: in with a par and now dustin johnson, one stroke away. from coming from five behind to take the
6:20 pm
nick: he just needs one square stroke. jim: if he holes it, this would be his fourth big dream from the playoffs for the first time his year. he would win for the fourth time. he would be 4-41. nick: still the tiniest of strokes. jim: birdie for the victory! an all-world par at the 72nd. to extend this tournament and then ultimately win it. his fourth win of the year,
6:21 pm
his 16th career victory. this is the one, though, that will be long remembered. had to hole it. had to have it. and then just manhandling this hole the second time around. the longest drive of the week. the wedge just below the cup. and a birdie for the stylish way to win it. dottie, down to you. dottie: jim, thank you. up, first words out of your mouth just a minute ago, tough day. that was -- what was the toughest part of it, considering you came out with a win? >> yeah, jordan is a tough competitor. he played really well all day. i felt like i
6:22 pm
today. just the front nine, couldn't hole a putt. hit really good putts the whole time, burning the edges. finally rolled in a couple of putts nine and 10 and it was nice in the playoff here. the wind kind of switched so i could cover the water. it was easier coming in with a 60-degree on 1 here and hit a great shot in to three feet. dottie: you spent 30 minutes' extra time yesterday working on your wedges. how important was that given the choice you made on 18 to play up and ultimately make a four to get into the playoff? >> it happened to me yesterday on 14. i drove it just in the rough. i just chipped out sideways to a number that i knew i had a good number. i know i'm swinging the club well. hitting my wedges very good. i laid it up here to 18 where i had 100 yards. i think i had 95 or something the first time around. i thought
6:23 pm
but i holed a nice really putt to get into the playoff. dottie: three events left in the fedexcup place. what yo your expectations? >> i'm expecting to play very well. i feel like the game is finally back in form like it was leading back into the masters. i feel like i'm swinging everything really well. got a lot of control over the golf ball and i'm feeling really good. obviously getting the win here today gives me a lot of kflt going into next week and the rest of the playoffs. do it. going forward, where do you think you need to improve to continue to dominate? >> i think right now i just need to keep doing what i'm doing. i feel like severing working pretty well. keep working hard on my wedge game. because if i drive it in the fairway, i get a lot of wedges. that's where i have to score. i feel like those are dialed in right now. keep working on those and hopefully keep driving as good as i am. dottie:

fourth win in the playoffs in your career. jim: didn't have a single bogey today. shot 66 to catch up to jordan then won it with a birdie. his first of 16 wins to ever come in a playoff. extra holes. and he's got win number four of the year. here at the northern trust and -- in old westbury, new york. the winner is dustin johnson. he now takes over first position in the playoff standings with jordan in second and justin thomas in third. back in a moment.

nine rookies remain out of the 100. eight players advance to the second week for the 11th straight season, including six past champions. you can't help but wonder if dustin on the eve of the masters, on that wednesday afternoon, had he not slipped and fallen, hurt his back, had to withgraduate -- withdraw from the tournament what this yore could have been. he had won three events already in the calendar year. he was back to that form this week. nick: i chatted to him earlier in the week and exactly what he was saying now. driving it so well. if i'm driving it like this all i have to do is work on my wedges. it's not the length, it's the fact he knows it's going to fade all the time. plus out there at 320-plus. good luck to the rest of the guys trying to beat that right now. jim: what a putt this was.
