in new york. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. the most powerful hurricane is bearing down and landfall in florida is looking more and more likely. irma hit barbuda where it knocked down power lines in the neighboring area of an teague ya. it's packing sustained winds of nearly 185 miles an hour. it's expected to move over parts of the virgin islands today and passion near puerto rico by tonight. the governor said irma is like nothing we have ever seen. evacuations have begun in the bahamas and begin this morning in florida keys. irma could hit florida by this weekend. seth lemon has been monitoring the details. >> good morning, brook. residents in hurricane-prone florida aren't taking any

devastation by hurricane harvey. they're raidg store shelves as they head out of town and the mandatory evacuations begin. this is video from the eye of irma, the most powerful atlantic hurricane in recorded history. the storm has officially made landfall as it churns toward the caribbean and heads toward florida. >> after what happened in houston, everyone is paying more attention than they probably have in the past. >> reporter: topping the scale as a category 5, winds have reached 185 miles an hour. officials in bahamas have issued its largest evacuation ever. in the florida keys where most islands are three to five feet above sea level. storm surge could reach 10 feet. >> we could be looking at wave heights that could put the storm over the island. >> reporter: the storm is predicted to reach cuba before

over the weekend. >> it's going to turn north. is it going be in the gulf coast, too early to tell. >> president trump has already declared emergencies in florida, puerto rico, and the u.s. virgin islands. >> normally it's a wait-and-see deal. i'll be honest with you. this track of this particular hurricane could be so devastating we're getting an early jump on it. >> florida's governor insists fema is prepared and ready to help in case this powerful storm takes a toll. on those radar images, you may have spotted another system forming just behind irma, and that could make a bad situation even worse. the national hurricane system says that could make the situation even more. that's tropical storm jose which could become a hurricane tonight. brook? >> thank you, seth. so far nearly 900 flights

the islands in the hurricane's potential path. our affiliate kpix is tracking irma. >> they're receive 1g 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts as literally the eye of the storm is passing directly your head or nearby. the worst of the hurricane is the eyewall which surrounds the center of the storm. that's what's moving toward barbuda right now and will move toward saint martin and the virgin islands in the next several hours. it's got sustained winds of 185 miles per hour. the wind gusts have been as high as 225 miles per hour. that is as strong as an ef-5 tonight. it continues to move west-northwest. here's the track, dangerously close to puerto rico, then dangerousl

decision to cancel daca means congress must act. >> i have a love for these people and hopefully now congress may be able to help them. >> earlier attorney general jeff sessions called daca unconstitutional. >> it was limited eun laterally to great controversy and legal concern after the congress rejected legislative proposals to extend general benefits to this same group of illegal aliens. >> president obama implemented daca in 2012. it approved illegal immigrants who met other kwamfications. the executive action removed the specter of deportation but did not provide a path to citizen ship. deportations will not begin immediately. existing applications will be processed but no new applications for work permits will be accepted. those with permits scheduled to expire in the next six months have until october 5

for an extension. if a permit sayre skpooirs after march 5th 20ks 18, the beholder could be subject to removal. the move sparked protests around the country. supporters note that many of the roughly 8,000 people covered hold full 250i78 jobs, enroll in college, or serve in the military. on facebook former president obama called it, quote, self-defeating or cruel. writing kicking them out won't lower the unemployment rate or lighten anyone's taxes or raise anybody's wage. white house press secretary sarah sanders says president trump wrestled with his decision. >> would he be willing to signed something that simply addresses daca legislate actively? >> the president wants to see sponls immigration reform and be part of it, but, again, we can't take just a one-piece fix. >> as part of that immigration reform, the white house also

allyson, take it away. >> yeah, this is a major, major storm. category a still as of 2:00 advisory, and this one is going down in the recordbooks. by the way, we are not going to really touch on it because it's not a concern right now, we also have jose quickly behind it, another tropical depression in the gulf of mexico. lots to cover here. we do have this moving through the lee -- leeward islands still as a category 5. the wind speed and pressure are remarkable. the wind speed is the highest wind speed they've had in the atlantic excludeing the caribbean and gulf of mexico. as far as the pressure, it's the 11th lowest pressure. if it drops anymore, the winds are going to continue to follow and increase. this is moving through puerto rico now. hurricane warnings are in place. as it travels near the british virgin islands, the u.s. virgin islands and peru later on tonight and eventually making its way

caicos, parts of the bahamas and cuba. a lot of preparations are going in place. this is the latest track, and it's interesting to see if they update it at 5:00 to nudge it a little bit farther to the east. we have some changes in the computer models. we told you this was going to happen. every day we look at these, they change a little bit with the extended forecast. so we'll show you those coming up in just a little bit and what that could mean for our region. we have an accident 95 and virginia right before you get to the beltway. it's impacting your northbound lanes. not significant backups here, but you might see this accident over on the shoulder. traffic lane camera not right at the accident, pretty close to there, though. we do actually have some traffic heading northbound this morning so more than what we've seen. maybe we will have a busier commute today. we also have some construction going on in an area where we had an accident as well yesterday, wellington road right by prince william street and route 28. no back ups there, but you are going to see crews out working this morning. other than that, things on the roadsoo
