this is the "cbs weekend news."
6:02 pm
tonight from correspondents throughout this hurricane zone. we begin with jonathan vigliotti in naipels in southwest florida. jonathan. >> jeff, we are getting wind gusts right now of upwards of 100 miles an hour. you can see what is didding to the trees behind me, really whipping them around. as you can imagine, early reports of many trees down, widespread power outages including at the shelter we are standing in front of. but moving forward is that storm surge. it is a big concern here. we are ground zero for it, expected to get 10 to 15 feet of a wall of water. in a community that we are keeping a close eye on ig marco island right in the gulf a few miles from where we are. we are told they have wind gusts of upwards 130 miles an hour and they are expected to get the brunt of that surge, 15 feet, 15,000 people are riding this storm out in shelters including the one that we will be safely riding this storm out as well. jeff.
6:03 pm
>> glor: that was jonathan vigliotti from just a short time ago in naples. the florida keys were the first to bear the full force of irma and elaine quijano is the first to make it back to key largo, elaine. >> here in key largo we are still feeling the effects of hurricane irma. some very powerful gusts continuing at this hour. here with you see while some boats remain tethered, others like this blue boat over here have become loose and essentially started to free float side to side here. a little bit hard to tell at this moment. but all and down the keys we know that thousands of people remain without power and key west was a place of concern. folks chose to stay here on the keys and ignored the mandatory evacuation orders. we're told that if they decided to stay, they would be on their own because officials would not come and rescue them. right no
6:04 pm
experiencing tremendously powerful forces as that boat there behind me, as you can see, is just being rocked side so side. but that's the latest here from key largo. >> glor: all right, elaine, thank you very much. we are still waiting for the worst here in the tampa bay area. but our hurricane coverage continues now with anthony mason in new york. anthony? >> thanks, jeff, let's get the latest on the hurricane's path from eric fisher chief meteorologist at boston station wbz. the storm has been downgraded but the threat of a storm surge is still real, what's ahead here? >> absolutely. as it interacts with land those winds will start to come down a little bit but we are still looking at a high impact event over the next 24 hours. there you see the latest radar loop, you see the eye made landfall close to marco island but off to the north these lines of tropical bands rolling inward those are full of waterspouts coming on shore and spitting up tornadoes. we have seen some of th
6:05 pm
there is a large area of rain to deal with, some of the peak gusts across the region, 142 miles per hour in naples, florida. so southwest florida has been bearing the brunt of all of this. a couple of gusts over 130. that is lakely where we max out now that we have some of that land interaction with the storm. it looks like they will take a path right along but just inland of the coastline. now that is still going to bring powerful surge, heavy rain to the tampa area but maybe a little bit less so than if it is just out to sea. we will be tracking that carefully into the evening. >> glor: a couple of days ago we were hearing about hurricane jose right behind irma. it's gone out to sea a bit but it's lingering out there. >> jose is something to be watching it is like if are you at the airport and there is a storm over the airport, there is a holding pattern. irma is the storm and jose is in that holding pattern. here are the latest stats, 120 mile per hour winds, looks like jose here, this is just north of the leeward islands. as it waits for irma,t

over the east coast and is warn down it will drift between the bahamas and bermuda. it basically nose nowhere foafer the next five days. as we head towards next weekend it will try to make a run at the east coast but until irma winds down, things unravel in the atmosphere we don't know exactly if it will come to the coast or stay just hoff jor. >> glor: more suspense next weekend, thank you very much for now. irma has been 4578ering miami all day. it escaped the worst but it is still under seige, in effect, mark strassmann is there, mark? >> all this is storm surge. and it keeps pouring into parts of downtown miami. irma's fury has been relentless all day. and to justify the decision by emergency decision to order the largest evacuation in this county's history. all day irma's hurricane force winds punished downtown miami. we reported in this morning's misery one block from biscayne bay. >> i heard this crash and it was this sign that had come
6:07 pm
down. give you a sense, this thing would cut somebody's head off if it hit them. >> up to five feet of storm surge poured into miami's downtown business district. brickell avenue became brickell river. social media showed damage all over the city. high winds snapped two construction cranes on buildings two miles apart. no one was reported hurt. but high anxiety hit hold of bill and judy reagan in their condo. >> i heard the gurg elling and recognized this morning that it is the flooding into the condo. >> reporter: by late morning first responders had to stop answering 911 calls. people who defied miami's evacuation order were on their own like tony and rachel coddington. >> it would have taken too long to get to orlando or orlando. we didn't want to chance it. >> as the storm hit today they shot this video of a sail boat trapped under a causeway. >> they told news a
6:08 pm
interview they were grateful not to have he yak-- evacuated to some place like naipel, deeper into the storm. >> are we relieved, slightly. but we hope it's going to be nok for them as well. but after a frightening day here, some people without decided not to evacuate must have had holdout remorse. if they get in trouble, until these conditions improve, they're on their own. >> glor: mark strassmann in miami, we're going to go back now to jeff glor in st. pete beach where it is looking a little more ominous behind you, jeff. >> glor: yeah, anthony, things have gotten considerably worse here in just the past few minutes. the skies have darkened, winds have picked up. a lot more rain. we've expecting the worst of irma to come around midnight, 1 a.m. and then be bad for several hours overnight before it hopefully calms down tomorrow. we have seen tornado warnings pop up across thel
6:09 pm
peninsula today. and manual bo jor queses-- bo jor kez is-- bojorquez is on the coast now, manny? yeah, manny may be having a connection problem there because the winds are so severe. >> we are in, as you said, the fort lauderdale area and it is not just these hurricane force winds and this pounding rain but it's also the fact that route the afternoon there has been one tornado warning after the other. what is happening here is that hurricane irma has spawned these waterspouts in the atlantic that make their way on shore and there's a report of at least
6:10 pm
tornado this afternoon near fort lauderdale international airport. right now there are also concerns about flooding. you can see the canal behind us where the cater has just been rising all day. and of course the storm surge, nearly 15,000 people here in the fort lauderdale area and in broward county have decided not to be in the elements and to go inside into shelters and that is a positive thing because right now in these conditions law enforcement cannot be out there. there is a curfew in place. but some people have decided not only to violate that curfew but there has been some looting. and in fact fort lauderdale police announced this afternoon that they arrested nine people for looting and said they will investigate any further reports of looting. so the big story here for broward county and the east coast of florida is that this is not over. the mayor here stressed to people do not let your guard down because as you can see, we are not over with the worst
6:11 pm
>> yeah, manny, far from over there, far from over here as well. there was a remarkable sight on florida's west coast. the bay waters temporarily resedded as -- receded as irma pulled them out to see. carter evans is 20 miles south of here, carter? >> we're in sarasota jeff right now. this is sarasota bay. you can see across it, about an hour ago, not any more. we have sideways rain and gusty, gusty wind. i'm going to guess that it is about 40, 50 miles an hour right now. it's been blowing strong like this for the last hour or so. and yes, we have seen extreme low tides today. i got to tell you, this storm has given us an opportunity to take a look at these low tides and people say they have never seen it before. >> the force of the oncoming hurricane is so strong that it is literally sucked the water right out of sarasota
6:12 pm
on is normally under a few feet of water. and you can see that a lot of people took advantage of a lull in the weather to go out and take a look at this anomaly, something they had never seen before. that is something emergency officials say you should absolutely not do. we have seen several looky loos coming out to look at the situation, standing in the sea break, walking out into the bay in extremely dangerous situation. let me show you this bridge over here. this is the bridge to bay island. bay island is access to siesta key. both are completely evacuated as of 8 p.m. last night. we took a drive on there, there are trees down across the road. it would be hard to get out of there if you were stuck inside right now especially behind that tree. so for those people, the time to evacuate, jeff, has come and gone. >> glor: it has, carter, thank you very much. we're getting stronger gusts
6:13 pm
taking down some branches. one would think before the night is over will you see trees down, a lot of trees down here as well. this tampa bay, this area is very vulnerable to this storm surge. st. pete sits on the gulf coast and across the bay the hillborough river runs through downtown tampa. tampa and south tampa flood often. and david begnaud is there, david? >> well, about six hours from irma rolling too tampa bringing with it a storm surge that could top eight feet in a city that is one of the most vul-- vulnerable in the world when it comes to flooding, this tha is the hillborough river and we have been watching it drop dramically. >> we noticed the water was receding, some what dramically, it was happening during the low tide cycle but it looked drirch as if somebody put a straw in the hillborough river running through downtown tampa and sucked it out into the gulf. the weather service says the reason it may have looked more dramatic than normal is because hurricane irma was helping
6:14 pm
pull the water out. now it eventually came back with the high tide cycle but here is what we are told to expect. on or about the time the hurricane rolls into the tampa area, it will coinside with the high tide. and as that water comes back into this area right up this river which is essentially a choke point, it will come with hurricane force winds and a storm surge that could be devastating to this coastal community that is one of the most vulnerable in the country. it's as if the winds of this hurricane are literally overriding the tide cycle. there is a curfew here in tampa at 6:00 tonight. the mayor told residents earlier we are about to get punched in the face by this storm. >> glor: david, thank you very much, yeah, gusts of 53 miles an hour now recorded at st. pete's airport. when we come back, shelters jammed with people without have no place else to go.

>> glor: back now from saibt pete beach on florida's gulf coast. many neighbors here fled the area ahead of irma but today we met some who were riding out the storm in a school building. john hopkins middle school is used to handling students. this weekend it's become a shell ter for those with special needs, many elderly and also families with pets who had nowhere else to go. we met 89 year old irma valin. >> your name is what? >> irma. >> your name is irma. irma live as loan in a small wooden house in nearby gulfport. >> i'm scared. i'm scared of the storm. >> did you come last night or today. >> no, last night. >> donnell rogers brought his nine year old daughter breyonce. are you worried? >> yes, actually i am. >> but you are going to say some prs

explode. emergency crews are to longer responding to 911 calls. it's too dangerous for them to be outside. now we know we're going to get a lot of wind. hundred mile an hour plus, wind gusts much higher than that, potentially well into tonight. then as the wind ramps down, storm surge becomes the real concern it could be ten feet or more in part parts of fort myers, that is what prompted evacuation. 30,000 people or so are in evacuation shelters right now, one woman at one of the shelters went into labor today, fortunately there was an emergency crew on hand there to help her through that. but the bottomline here, people are taking shelter, they are staying indoors because irma is almost to fort myers. >> glor: kris, thank you very much, still ahead on the day irma arrives, we'll take you to the home of disney world, orlando, florida.

there was a gust so powerful it actually broke this street lamp. the force of the fall really just sent a crack through the air that we heard. now the main concern for officials is that high winds also tornadoes, this county, orange county here where orlando is is under a tornado warning. there have already been two tornadoes in the county to the east of us, where those tornadoes destroyed six mobile homes. one house, there was actually a man in one of the mobile homes who ignored evacuation orders and survived. given these conditions the mayor of orange county here where orlando is has instituted a 7 p.m. curfew, it lasts all the way tomorrow at 6 p.m she wants to make sure that everyone is sheltered in place, that they are safe but also that these roads are clear for emergency vehicles to get to where they need to go. anthony? >> adriana diaz, in orlando, thanks. and we'll be right back with an update on hurricane irma.
