racism investigated as a motive in a string of shootings in baton rouge, louisiana. 23-year-old kenneth gleason facing murder charges in the shooting deaths last week of a homeless man and a dishwasher on his way to work. both were black. gleason is also accused of firing on the home of a black family. police say they found a copy of a hitler speech at gleason's home. a judge today gave america's biggest toy store chain permission to borrow money. so it can stock up for the holiday shopping season. toys "r" us filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. nearly $5 billion in debt. and losing business to wal-mart and amazon. all 1600 toys "r" us stores remain open, for now. we'll have an update on

this is the cbsover. >> welcome to the "overnight news." i'm vladamir dutiers. the caribbean is staring on unthe barrel of another major storm. this one hurricane marie yeah. the hurricane devastated several islands and is on a collision course with puerto rico. that island escaped serious damage from the last hurricane irma. this time, puerto rico is expected to take a direct hit. david begnaud is there. >> just two weeks after hurricane irma sideswiped the island. the governor walked through the streets today making sure no one was taking any chances. please let us help you. irma knocked out power here and to 70% of the rest of the

including the home of 68-year-old hector pena gomez. parkinson's disease. we are going to do our best to you to a safe place, the governor told him. the fear here is fueled by maria's wallop of dominica and guadalupe. causing flooding and leaving one person dead. tortola is bracing for the worst. where to take shelter on an island where almost every building was damaged and the roofs ripped off. storm debris from irma could be turned into potential lethal missiles as maria's winds move in. in puerto rico, food is rationed. there are lines to buy fuel and get in shelters. are you going to got out? >> she headed for shelter after her generator broke. her daughter cannot sleep in the insufferable heat as the a monster hurricane approaches. most places are boarded up to night as the wind is picking up. you know the last time a category 5 hurricane made landfall here was 90 years ago map.

maria expected to hit tomorrow morning early. aftershocks continue after the region was hit by a massive 7.1 earthquake. the trembler collapsed buildings, set off fires and sent residents into the streets. adrian bard is there. it began to shake at 1:14 and it felt like it was never stop. this one seemed like the big one. pictures and statues fell off the shelves. we lost all communication, via cell phones, landlines and the power went out. and, elsewhere in the city, we learned of buildings collapsed. people are still trapped in the rubble. the roofs of the shopping center caved in. the airport runway is cracked. a government building sits tilted on its side. many, many people are injured. even more still feeling panic.

reforma avenue, there are thousand of people out on the street gazing up at cracked buildings. >> adrian bard in mexico city. thank you, adrian. a newscaster in mexico was on the air when the earthquake hit. when the studio started shaking, he left quickly. and in search of a safe place. the station's cameras caught what was happening outside. and back in the studio, heavy lights shook wildly. a good reason not to be under them. >> dr. lucy jones is a renowned seismologist, who spent years with the u.s. geological survey. dr. jones, this was a smaller quake than the one that hit mexico earlier in the month but appears to be doing more damage.
