hurricane maria leaves the island in ruins. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarter in new york. i'm brook silva-braga in for anne-marie green. we begin with the rhett rinne between north korean president kim jong-un and president trump. this morning kim jong-un called president trump mentally dera e deranged. he said mr. trump would pay dearly for his remarks at the u.n. president trump promised sanctions against the countries who trade with north korea. >> it's a great threat to peace and security in our world, and it is unacceptable that others financially support this criminal rogue regime. >> meanwhile it's reported that the north korean foreign minister said his country might conduct a hydrogen bomb test in

now to hurricane maria, the recovery will take months if not longer. the coast guard rescued three people from an overturned ship near the puerto rican island. it had been caught in the storm the day before. fema said it will open an air bridge to deliver some much needed supplies. limited supplies are expected as well. the entire island is blacked out. many may have to live without electricity for months. much of the infrastructure is also dried or damaged. david begnaud is in san juan. >> reporter: residents of puerto rico waded through the mess hurricane maria left behind. flooding is widespread and electricity is nonexistent. 20 minutes in san juan, police and volunteers are looking to rescue people trapped by

storm surge. they helped this man and his dog get out and get to dry land. they're talking to people and asking them what the situation is in their home. across the island streets that don't look like rivers are covered in power lines. maria's 155-mile-per-hour winds crushed what was already a weak power grid. officials cannot say when it will be restored. before slamming puerto rico, maria roared across the mountainous island of dominica. the death toll climbs to 15 and the search continues. the storm passed the island as a category 3. maria is moved toward turks and caicos. president trump has approved a federal disaster declaration for. >> reporter: >> how did you feel when you saw the rescue come? >> happy. very happy. >> reporter: with so many communities cut off, the full extent of the damage is not yet

rico. in mexico the death toll from tuesday's earthquake has now topped 270 people. more than 2,000 were injured, and the search for survivors trapped in collapsed buildings continues. but the search for one girl who made headlines from around the world turns out to have been a false report. nikki battiste has the report. good morning. >> that's right, brook. the child became a symbol of hope, but no family members came forward to identify her and her name wasn't registered at the school. rescue crews with dogs in and around mexico city spent a third full day and nighting for survivors of tuesday's earthquake. survivors are still being found. this is a rescuer crawling between two collapsed walls pulling a womano

mexican president enrique pena nieto said there are still damaged buildings. he said rescues will continue as long as there's hope of anyone trapped or alive. at one of the schools that collapsed stories spread among media that a girl was stuck under the rubble. it gripped the nation. turns out the story wasn't true. officials say all of the children inside had been accounted for. they point out a staff member is in there and may still be alive. nine children and six adults were killed. a scary moment during the day as they had to stop during the day when a reported alarm rang of an aftershock. they yelled out yes we can. it
