good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. so far firefighters in northern california have been unable to control a string of 22 catastrophic wildfires. powerful winds are fanning the flames and officials warn the worst is not over. at least 23 deaths are blamed on the fires. 3,500 buildings and homes have been destroyed and more are under way. >> reporter: good morning. that number 23 dead could rise. they're afraid of that. there are a number of reasons for that. so many people are missing still four days into this and, secondly, they even not had a chance to search every home that's burned down. as you mentioned, strong winds are driving this fire and the

stronger as the day goes on. block after block of santa rosa, california, has been reduced to ash, the wildfires ripping through northern california continue to bush out of control and with high winds in the forecast, officials warn it could get worse. >> there have been fires that just blow through. this has been going on for three days with no resolution. wee just on edge right now. >> reporter: authorities have inned new and wider evacuations as both the number and size of the fires continue to grow. >> it's absolutely devastating. it is heartbreaking. this is crushing. it looks like another planet. >> reporter: of the 600 people reported missing in sonoma county, half have been located. spotty cell service is part of the culprit. police say it's now a work and recovery mission. >> we're trying to get to their house. >> ror
