the name is amazing. >> did you have an option in mind? >> no. >> the name stuck, and so did their sound. ♪ front man, surround himself with serious musicians. band mates hail from berkeley college of music where they play jazz before they hit the road with reynolds whose idea of a rock band was a bit different. >> i'm so burned out on the whole theme of rock 'n' roll equals drugs. the rest i can, i can go with. you can complete the equation. rock 'n' roll equals, just sex, i guess. ♪ my kingdom come >> good music, good fans followed. the bright lights of success had a dark side too. ♪ ♪ look into my eyes ♪ ♪ it's where my demons hide ♪ >> we went pretty hard. it was years on the road. not seeing families, not seeing friend. just sort of disconnecting from

reality. >> for reynolds it was a dangerous combination. >> when i am happy, very happy. when i am low, so low. they have had to deal with that for years and years. he suffered from depression most of his life. usually silent. but not this time. reynolds needed time away, they all did. and so at the height of their success, imagine dragons took a year off. when hey all returned to the studio, the result was evolved, their third album. ♪ ♪ you build me up build me up believe it ♪ >> f

believer, attacks depression head on. >> it is about, finally, finding gratitude in my flaws. in my weakness. it is finally given me freedom. it's made me a believer in myself. ♪ pain ♪ ♪ you make me a believer believer ♪ >> does it feel like like a little bit of a relief in a way ? is it freeing to be able to write about? >> the most cathartic experience, you know, written hundreds and hundred. most of them terrible. my way of ex-pressing myself. now to be able to be doing it in a way that is honest, raw, vulnerable and share it some times with what could be millions of people find comfort in that rather than fear. >> the importance of dealing with his depression made all the more clear when sound garden's, and linkin park singer committed suicide this year.

it's important to be vulnerable and raw. >> do you feel responsibility stew do that with your fans? >> i do the tie do. >> i don't ever want to let you down. no. >> part of his depression stemmed from a crisis of faith. reynold was born into a large mormon family. and while he is now happily married to his wife and fellow musician, the church's doctrine against gay marriage tore him apart. >> lgbtq youth not accepted in their home or community are eight times more likely to ak commit suicide. three times more like for drug use. glaring problem. >> of acceptance, yes. >> he took his argue toomt uh the doorstep. organizing a festival aimed at sparking conversation between the church and lgbtq, and called it love loud. >> most important stage i have ever walked on. >> the part of love live, this issen collusive for everyone. not attacking an organization. not attack the mormon church. we want to start dialogue about something everyone can agree on. which is that, these statistics need to change. >> it was a sellout crowd. the mormon churc
