wright now on wusa9, news no family or neighborhood wants to hear. a woman is dead after a house fire in capital heights, maryland. a man was able to get out of the house, but it's not the first tragic event to impact the family the last couple of weeks. >> reporter: you can see the flames shooting out of the roof and windows. >> flames coming out of the living room. >> reporter: black smoke filled the air as firefighters fought to get i under control. >> emergency vehicles up and down the street. >> reporter: elaine james was found passed out inside. her adult son ran looking for

>> he only had a coat and no pant ors nothing. >> reporter: neighbors saw first responders take mrs. james out of the house. she was wrapped in a blanket. >> like she was balled up in a little knot. she wasn't a very big woman. >> reporter: an ambulance rushed james to the hospital, but she didn't survive. >> it's very sad and tragic because it's thanksgiving, nobody wants to hear news like that. >> reporter: investigators say the fire started in the kitchen near the stove. and the home had no working smoke detectors. after two firefighters were burned at this hour, their team came back to the neighborhood hours later going door to door to check for working smoke alarms and answer questions. >> a lot of people don't have the heart to go in situations like that to save a life, but he did, and we appreciate that. >> reporter: neighbors say the family that lived here was kind and friendly. james' son now without a mother after losing his father two weeks ago. >> yeah, good people in the

>> it's definitely a tragedy. >> reporter: a hard time during the holidayings that neighbors -- holidays that neighbors and first responders hope people can learn from to keep it from happening again. wusa9. >> and if you can't afford to buy a smoke alarm, call 311 in prince georges county. they'll install one for free. another fire overnight, this one in annapolis. it happened in an apartment off fairview avenue. two people were hurt, including a firefighter. it took 90 minutes to put the fire out. several families are out of their homes. the firefighters are still investigating the cause. and a metro alert for anyone that uses the red line. it's going to shut down between silver spring and fort taunton tomorrow through december 10th. the tacoma

so shoppers were out of control last night at a mall in birmingham, alabama. several fights were reported shutting down the mall early. that's video from a fire there taken by a person at the mall. it was over a personal issue though, not a shopping issue. someone threw a shoe that hit a baby. no one was arrested and the mall reopened at 6:00 this morning. crowds and chaos seem to be as much a black friday tradition as the food comas and leftovers. with new oppo

accurate forecast. and that weather certainly did cooperate for black friday and good news, it's going to cooperate for small business saturday as well. so if you're headed out to support a lot of our local small businesses, shouldn't have issues weather-wise for most of us tomorrow, and even warmer. quickly the temperatures this evening falling through the hoes and 30 -- 40s and 30s. 42 tonight at 10:00, midnight, 41. tomorrow even warmer cranking the temperatures up to 60, but lurking behind it is our next cold front. this may bring a shower to some places tomorrow evening. most of us stay dry, but there's a cool down by sunday. starting off in the 30s tomorrow, 50s by lunchtime. little breezy tomorrow afternoon with the maryland game with penn state in town. look at the temperatures by 3:00,
