destroying nearly 800 homes and other buildings. more evacuations have been ordered as the fires move west and some amtrak services in southern california have been suspended. kenneth craig has more. >> reporter: firefighters faced immense flames as the thomas fire reached carpenter rhea. officials say it's now one of the largest in state history. >> yesterday the thomas fire was at number 15. today after just an update on the acreage, it moved to number five. >> reporter: after almost a week on the lines, firefighters are tiring. >> talking to the firefighters that have been out here since day 1, they've said this has been one of the most trying and taxing fires and incidents they've ever been on. >> reporter: with the fire bearing down on car pent rhea, many don't know if their

arrest this morning after making violent threats on a southwest airlines flight. >> i want to [ bleep ] kill everybody on this [ bleep ] plane. >> southwest officials say valerie curbelo was smoking in the bathroom. she disabled the smoke alarm. flight attendants escorted her back to her seat and that's when she became aggressive. the flight from portland to sacramento. she was arrested. she blames anxiety. a south carolina man convicted of killing reportedly seven victims said there are more victims. todd co-lip said he tried to tull the fbi but he was blown off. he pleaded guilty to seven counts of murder that took place over a decade and he was sentenced to life in prison. and this morning freeze warnings are in parts of alabama, georgia,

thousands of people were left without power from texas to virginia. officials are warning atlanta commuters of icy roads during this morning's commute. there was also snow in the northeast. a lot of it in buffalo where the bills played the colts during a major snowstorm. at times there were whiteout conditions. cbs news conducted a six-month investigation into sexual assault at the united states air force academy. more than a dozen current and former cadets say their cases were mishandled. several talked to cbs co-host norah o'donnell. here's one. >> i was sexually assault my freshmen year and the sexual assaults made me leave. >> only this morning we'll have more on norah's interview. nikki haley weighs in on president trump's sexual misconduct accusers. and an

archaeologists in egypt have discovered two ancient tombs in the southern city. the tombs contained a mummy wrapped in linen, coffin fragments, skulls, bones, statues, and figurines. those buried in the tombs haven't been identified. a high-tech swimsuit is making waves in schools across the country. parents are buying their kids the expensive suits to help them go faster at swim meets, but some states are banning them. meg oliver reports. >> ror
