the storm moving up the east coast passing of now and parts of the area see a couple of inches. >> we are driving up the coast talking with commuters and listening to your comments on social media. thank you for joining us on our special edition of wake up washington. i am monitoring what you are saying. we are talking snow and some of the biggest counties impacted. prince william county public schools in virginia, you are close. fairfax, and other counties on a two hour delay. we just got word that the federal government is on a tw

option for telework or unscheduled leave. but there is a full list of closings on your screen and updating information on our wusa mobile app. let's head over to the woman of the hour tracking the forecast and snow. we are in for the long haul at least until between 8 am and 10 pm looking at snow across the area. some of the heaviest snow band outside of the ocean city area. we will show you what is happening. we have snow around the leonardtown area. baltimore and all of the viewing area involved with this system. if we zoom into the -- dc area we can see around pentagon and parts of national park and highway university, all of those areas getting a light snow. we go around prince george's county where billy and fedex field are seeing light snow showers along 50 and 495.

around rockville and gaithersburg, potomac, and germantown, these areas with light snow at this time. i know it is just starting around the northern tip of montgomery county. quantico, stafford. frac fredericksburg light snow for you as well. the have your band has popped up south as well with moderate snow popping up. everywhere else is just getting late snow and heavier snow to the east of us. we will continue to track this. this should begin to wrap up between 8 a.m. and 10 am and will shift over to the east. one or two inches. if you are further west you are looking at a dusting and maybe up to an inch. traffic will be impacted. i have been looking at traffic cameras and i feel like they are key we are seeing the snow

we will keep looking at those. i want to mention two other things weather related. we have a water main break and a gas line repair. the water main break on university boulevard. you are affected in both directions. then to gas line repairs are happening northwest heading eastbound between fifth and sixth street. then traffic cameras as well. 395. i put on a rotation. we have so many cameras to show you of what we are seeing. 50 at route 611 and it looks like last night they were looking further south and east. jan and larry do not forget we wanted to know what you are seeing. sent us messages on twitter and you can find me on facebook. what do you see your window. it is nice to show the viewers. like how is your driving? >> it was all right. you never know if it is what

over the river. we are on 50 in delmarva. with past riviera and we are making our way to ocean city. what you are seeing as we passed over the river, is the snow is being blown around because the wind has been picking up as we continue driving throughout the course of the early morning hours. ocean city is back. the wind is sustained as much as 30 miles per hour. the wind gusts with ocean city and where we are driving in delmar for, will be over 40 miles per hour and that is a blizzard warning in effect because of it -- visibility could drop quarter of a mile with the wind around with snow. we have had snow covered roads the entire morning. some of you are asking why we didn't get a big one for dc. i will explain why. in order to get a good storm. for us to get heavy snow,

school or staying inside we want to see your snow pictures. send those to our facebook or twitter account. we could show some of your pictures as well. i can tell you i am on my way to work. the roads do not look so bad and i was talking to mary earlier and she said in our area it is up to two inches. of the coast we could see more accumulation and outer lying areas. >> i live in alexandria and i was looking at my car and thinking it was not that bad. was maybe three or four minutes and i did slip and slide a little bit because i was going to fast.>> we have to give a shot of emergency room -- a shout out to emergency room workers. i saw an alert to come through and walter reed, the national medical center will be open for emergency patient services. there asking if you are part of

work. all other personnel can come in with a two hour delay. the deep freeze gripping the country took aim at the south last night. >> snow and freezing rain blanketed roadways from florida to georgia as temperatures dipped 30 degrees below normal. in georgia were more than three inches of snow fell dozens of long haul truck drivers were forced to pull over for safety.>> i knew it was going to start snowing. i would say there is a quarter of an inch of ice on the road. it is icing everything up. like the winter storm is expected to have a bigger impact as it moves from the south to the northeast were some areas are experiencing now. major airlines including delta and american are allowing passengers to rebook flights ahead of the storm. more than 2000 flights are canceled for today.

good morning everybody. we are waking up to a light blanket of snow across the area as we watch our coastal storm make a track to the east. around the neighborhoods slightly heaviest around the east area. we are dealing with the lighter snow around the d.c. area so manassas, leesburg and german town getting light snow. if you

dunkirk also getting light snow. in the city of d.c. right now around the pentagon, 237, 395, all those areas getting a blanket of light snow as well. further to the east prince georges county, light snow along 50 in fedex field, queen ann getting light snow. here's what we are dealing with. you find the heavier snow the further east you go closer to the system. around ocean city we do have a blizzard warning for that area. we also have a winter storm warning around the east in the cambridge area, around the d.c. area a wind chill weather advisory until later on this morning. not so much accumulation but timing during the rush hour people are trying to get to work. this is going to be the next half an hour light snow continuing around the area. notice moderate snow popping up at 5:00 a.m.

covered in that light snow. 7:00 a.m. same story, light snow around d.c. by that time you get slightly heavier snow with the heaviest of 8:00 a.m. then you notice by noon this begins to shift over to the east. the virginia suburbs are beginning to clear and still left over light flurries around the d.c. area. the bulk is beginning to shift to the east fully clearing the area by 6:00 p.m. it's the morning drive you have to worry about snow showers. snow totals a dusting around the virginia suburbs. 1 to 2 around d.c., 2 to 4 in easton. you could see upwards of four to eight around the ocean city area. ellen? >> all right mary ask and you should receive. already getting photos so working to get them on the maps. traffic lane cameras as you look out your window get an idea of what the roads are looking like

here's the beltway off forestville road and bradley boulevard. you saw a lot of this on your drive in. either the roads have been treated and wet but it's so shiny out there you might also run into icy patches especially on bridges and over passes this morning. here's the beltway at the national harbor. traffic very light out there still this morning and heading to the dale city area hardly anyone out there but snow collecting as well. i've been looking at cameras in downtown d.c. here's 13th street and k street northwest so here's where you see snow on the roads different than the beltway ase beltway as well and wisconsin also if you are on q street here's a live look here. send me photos. under score ellen bryan on twitter and facebook. >> thank you so much. 4: 14 your time and we were talking about the number of plows

welcome back to wake up washington. we are tracking our coastal system bringing snow around the area. there's the big picture. you can see all of our viewing area getting light to moderate snow fall across the area and heavier bands around the ocean city area. it's heavier there. let's zoom in and see what you are waking up to. we are around the germantown area slightly heavier around there. rockville, laural, d.c. getting light snow

manassas, culpepper light snow falling for your. if you are in virginia this is one of the places where it tapers off. d.c. a little bit longer for you. it's going to take 9 or 10:00 for things to really taper off. but georgetown cross roads all along 395, the pentagon, all these areas getting light snow. any road that's untreated will have a coating of snow on it across the region. we go to prince georges next, buoy along 50, fedex field, 415 light snow for you all and around this area there's light snow falling there and further over south around the mechanicville area, prince frederick, getting light snow. we'll continue to see this type of activity throughout the morning. around 10:00 a.m.

to find the slightly heavier amounts in the ocean city del mar area. there's actually blizzard warnings going on there because the winds are so strong. that could create white out conditions for them. around cambridge we do have a winter storm warning there for baltimore down to washington we are under a winter weather advisory. we are not expecting the higher amounts but the timing is the key issue for us because it's during rush hour where people are trying to get to work and school. let's talk about how much snow around the region. i've been talking to you on facebook. we continue to send in the questions and answer them on facebook and twitter. let's show you the big map. leesburg, manassas a trace to an inch, d.c. metro one to two inches, from la platta to the two to four inch area annapolis to easton. once

could see up to four to eight inches. they will be in it longer than we are. 5:00 a.m. trying to head out, you are going to have some snow out there. 6:00 a.m. same story. more moderate bands around the easton area and higher snow amounts there as well. 7:00 a.m. no luck still dealing with light to moderate snow trying to drive out getting out of your neighborhood may be rougher than getting on the main road. they were treating those but your neighborhoods may have light snow left on the roads out there to get out. 8:00 a.m. light snow showers going. once we get around lunch time this thing kicks off to the east. the virginia suburbs are pretty much done. a few flurries left over and the rest of you are beginning to see relief. by 6:00 p.m. things are beginning to clear up mainly over the eastern shore area still

to pick up and take a look alternative that seven day coming up. 30 miles per hour gusts being reported in washington, 45 miles per hour gusts have been reported in ocean city. ellen? >> so let's get a look at the road conditions out along an area of driving to del marva we have melissa in storm tracker 9 right now. we were talking about the significant wind gusts and the snow is kicking back on the car as it is driving which is going to limit visibility, increase road hazards so take it easy out there this morning. also an opportunity to have some fun as well. >> it is. in our area a trace to two inches of snow obviously along the outer lying areas along the coast a little more snow. road conditions are expected to be tougher there. let's talk to ellen about the conditions in our area. how is it looking? >> it doesn't take much to really jam things up. right now it looks okay but we are seeing the snow

roads. mary described our commute perfectly. these roads are still covered. then you get onto the main highways and they look wet but you never know whether it's wet or icy especially over those bridges and overpasses. this morning just a couple of alerts. a water main break we've been dealing with all week university boulevard between connecticut avenue and a gas line going on on m street. impacted between 6th and 5th street northwest. any morning i want to know what you are seeing just about ten minutes ago matthew wilson sent me four photos of maryland. working to get those on air. we are seeing what everybody else is seeing on the roads and mary can see what's happening in your neighborhood. i'm under score ellen bryan, facebook ellen bryan t.v. show you what the belt way and 315 looks like

local first responders are making sure they are ready to save people in freezing temperatures. in montgomery and d.c. they trained yesterday how to rescue people who fall into icy waters and have special equipment gear and techniques to keep them safe. the ice does not freeze the same way and does to the north of us. there's no way to tell if that ice is in d.c. >> hypothermia sets in and gets to that point that person that is above that ice shelf might not be able to hang on anymore. >> the best thing to do is stay off the ice. if you see someone fall in call 911 right away, first responders on the way and try to find a rope to throw into the water to help them out. >> what you are listening to right now is the sound of marens in leonard town,

the incoming snow fall last night. leonard town is about 60 miles south of the district in chesapeake bay where hillary lane is right now. >> we are here on three notch road in st. mary county. the snow has been coming down for quite a bit and the roads are pretty icy. people are gassing up getting ready to head out. what have the roads been like for you so far? >> they are pretty bad, slick all the way from hollywood through this morning. i got another probably hour ride. they are covered. cars are sliding everywhere. this is for real. >> what are you doing to stay safe? are you driving slower? >> oh yeah, taking my time trying not to swerve and following people close and what not. >> no snow day? >> no i have to be at work. >> is it busier for you on a snow day? >> oh yeah clear

good morning everyone. we are waking up to snow this morning all thanks to a coastal storm moving through the area. we are going to take a closer look and show you what we are seeing in these areas. heavier snow bands have been around the ocean city area and the del marva coast we are expecting the higher snow amounts. for us one to two inches around d.c. spotting that light snow

across leesburg, manassas, d.c., rockville, laural getting in on it. if you are going to be taking 295, 315 light snow falling there. the pentagon, georgetown, howard university, all of those areas getting the light snow. further east we go to prince georges county and buoy and fedex field, 495 light snow falling on those roads. further north around the rockville area and bottom yack there's light snow falling so if you are going to take 355 look out for snow falling in that particular area. further west we go to fairfax light snow there as well. we are on the back edge of this so far out over the ocean so we locked up and have gotten the light snow out of this around the d.c. metro. having that pushed over just a little bit more along the coast it would be a completely different ball game. we have blizzard warnings around ocean city and winter storm warning around the easton
