here's a look at conditions in virginia beach. this lesner bridge construction cam updates every half hour. as you can see, its quiet. public works says crews are out prepping roads in case of frost. this view of the wavy parking lot comes from my phone just outside our studio in portsmouth. we tried contacting city officials about plans to treat the roads. we'll let you know when we hear from them. and a still photo of this light winter blanket from our morning producer, meagan williams, before she made the trip to work freemason street in norfolk with a dusting. city offiicals tell us they will probably not start treat roads until tomorrow. as the storm moves through, we expect it to leave a mark on the peninsula. we find 10 on your side's liz kilmer in hampton at the intersection of east mercury boulevard and crestwood circle. liz, what are you seeing out there?

(current conditions) we started seeing light flurries around 8:30 tonight - it has/hasn't been consistent. is/isn't sticking to roads. where we're standing - we some residential roads and also the highway here. let's first take a look at traffic on east mercury boulevard - you're looking at an overpass here, which can sometimes be more slick - but -- (traffic conditions --- is snow sticking? is it busy? slush? coating? seeing issues?) (seeing plows, etc?) hampton were busy pre-treating roads - heavily pre-treating with brine late this afternoon. now, with the precipitation happening - crews are out assessing roads and where needed. same in newport news - there, crews didn't pretreat, but now that we are seeing the precipitation, public works employees are out and about. again, highways looking (conditions) from here, we can show you a look at residential roadways -- certainly less-

shoppers have already wiped milk and bread from the shelves. they're expecting at least six inches of snow there over the next couple days. the snow has already started falling to our west we're looking at the roads in louisville, kentucky. about two inches of snow caused accidents and closed school for the day. snow is making roads treacherous tonight for millions. at least one driver slid into a home in st. louis. another truck driver flipped on the side of a highway -- stay one step ahead of the storm with our free wavy weather app. get access to the current conditions and hour by hour forecasts. a bomb threat at jeb little creek fort story is developing news tonight. the base shut down one of the gates while investigators took a closer look. they closed gate 5, at the intersection of shore drive and independence blvd. in virginia beach. the base itself stayed open, but this tied up traffic for hours. 10 on your side's liz

liz, police took one person into custody and the f-b-i is now involved. and tom - according to leading this investigation. a spokeswoman confirms the suspect is detained and currently being questioned. everything at gate 5 has returned to normal. but this is where the suspicious package was found. no one has released details on where specifically the package was located at the gate...or if anything was in it. we can show you what the area looked like during the investigation. we had to stay far back as major roads were shut down leading to little creek/fort story. according to police, the package was found at 5. a base spokesperson then told us a suspect was taken into custody. no information on that person has been released. little creek/fort story did treat this as a bomb threat. an explosive ordinance disposal

norfolk was called in to determine what was in investigation, jeb little creek did send out alerts to people who work on base. open...however, many caught off guard by the situation and weren't aware there was a problem. fbi says it is working with local, state and military partners as this investigation continue. we are hoping to learn new information from the fbi tonight. as soon as we have it, look for it on wavy news 10 at 11...or online at wavy.com. live in vb, side. all new tonight. virginia beach police are looking for a man they say robbed an oceanfront pharmacy. it happened this morning around 10. officers say the suspect threatened to hurt employees of the walgreens on pacific avenue. they say he grabbed drugs and ran towards 25th street.

students in virginia beach could spend fewer days in class. there are 183 days on the calendar now. school board members are asking a committee to make a schedule that's either 180 or 181 days. fewer days for students, could mean more time for professional development. the school board will vote february 2nd. of the seven hampton roads cities, virginia beach is the only school system with 183 instructional days. portsmouth, hampton and newport news have 181 days. norfolk, suffolk and chesapeake have 180 instructional days. you can find all the school calendars on our website wavy.com city officials could be leaving parts of portsmouth's history in the past. the reason neighbors say they're upset with council's vision for the future. a norfolk city leader has pleaded not guilty to corruption charges -- what's next for treasurer anthony burfoot. and what looks to be just a taste of the bigger winter entree. this time lapse shows

of these things had been swirling around, a lot of this he had never heard before. 5547 burfoot's attorney says his client has no plans to step down as treasurer. the trial is set for may. a federal jury will decide the case of a family that claims mold in military housing made them sick. it happened in 2011, when the family says they lived at a lincoln military housing complex in virginia beach. the attorneys representing this family - also represent 18 other families. they hope this family will be awarded between 3 and 10 million dollars in damages. depending on how the judge rules, the attorneys will decide how to move forward with the remaining 18 cases. people who pride themselves on preserving portsmouth's past, are afraid the city may take it away. it's over a new set of "guiding principals" city council has drawn up. 10 on your side's joe fisher spoke with people about what they call a threat to history -- ((c175 33:45)) "i can't fathom the thought of them taking

((c175 26:08)) "our first land grants here go back to 1620. a lot of important things have happened here over the centuries." it's no shock its residents care about keeping the history alive. ((c175 28:52)) "when you step outside of hampton roads, we're one of the greatest places in the world." the portsmouth city council currently uses these "vision principles" that include "preseving the proudest traditions of the past as a compass for our future." in recent weeks, however, new "vision principles" have been drawn up -- ommitting the "pride of past" priority. ((c175 30:20)) "trying to write the history out of our priniciples, why would anybody want to do that." joe elder is owner at shipjack nautical wares on high street -- and vice-president of the olde towne business association. he's one of many people concerned with history taking a back seat in city government. it's

a little girl who survived a fire in new york, has received more than two million cards. her injuries may be difficult to see, but we've been telling you about eight- year-old safyre terry for weeks. she was badly burned when someone set fire to her home, and her family died. this past year, she asked for christmas cards, and the world responded in force. now a team of volunteers is sorting through tons of mail. terry's family has set up a trust fund for her as well, since so many people have been sending donations. norfolk state university makes a basketball coaching change. odu's jeff jones talks about what the monarchs need to do to snap its 3 game losing streak. and justin upton from chesapeake just became a whole lot richer.
