breaking news -- a water main break has damaged

hampton. and it also disrupted business for some companies in the area. crews shut down both directions of west mercury boulevard between saville row and cunningham drive tonight. that's where we find 10 on your side's liz kilmer. liz, what's the status of the repairs? tom, nicole - still ongoing - but traffic is now moving in both directions. the water main break actually occurred on the median here and water shot towards the west bound lanes where workers were left with a mess to clean up. right now they're working on repairs. take a look at this -- we got a close up look at see the mess in the road, water, mud, gravel, lots of damage. that was cleaned up shortly after 9. about a dozen businesses are without water - we went to some of them. denny's, mcdonalds, all had to close early tonight. this is a back. then, repairs will likely continue. hampton public works will also be

concern of ice, once this coming to the scene -- dealing with the concern of ice, once this water freezes. take sot sgt. matt bond - hampton police division 23:40 "with the water and the temperature dropping cleanup for their streets and roads." hampton police sgt. matt bond tells me a patrol officer noticed the break shortly before 6 tonight and quickly shut down the roads. fortunately, no one was hurt beforehand - there are no reports of cars being damaged. a spokesman for newport news water works says this was caused by cold water temperatures. outside here, certainly frigid for these workers - expected to be out here into the early morning hours. meantime, again, traffic is moving in both directions. work is contained to one westbound lane, near the median where this break happened. live in hampton, liz kilmer, 10

breaking news from hawaii -- the marines have declared 12 missing service members dead. it's been exactly a week since two c-h- 53-es went down off oahu. local and military rescuers haven't found any signs of life in their days of searching. the helos went down during a routine training flight. breaking news from portsmouth. police are looking for a missing boy. officers sent us this picture of 12-year-old michael key. they say he took out the trash on leckie street around seven tonight, but never came back. that's near owens creek. his family has been trying to find him. he was last seen wearing a black and gray hoodie, gray jeans, pink socks and black sandals. if you can help find him, call police. back to our coverage of what may be a major winter storm -- governor terry mcauliffe has already declared a state of emergency, giving

have our salt)) runs: 20 if you have plans to fly this weekend -- you may want to think again. airlines have already cancelled thousands of flights -- fearing what this storm might bring. american, for instance, has cancelled all its 654 flights in charlotte, friday. united will cancelled all flight from dulles international starting at four tomorrow. here's a look at the flight aware misery map -- so far tonight we've seen nearly 500 delayed flights and about two dozen cancellations. some are affecting norfolk international, so double contact your airline before heading out. dominion virginia power says it's ready for anything that comes our way. heavy snow and high winds can take a toll on power lines. the company says additional crews are being sent to the areas expected to be most affected. and they'll have employees working around the clock.

palka spoke to them about the efforts. liz? there are an estimated 800 to one thousand homeless youth in hampton roads. and this weather can pose a threat to them. which is why seton youth shelters are open for kids who need a place to especially with this storm coming up. a warm, safe place. somewhere to sleep...do homework....play games...and talk to someone. shelter some might take for granted as the weather gets colder. c1 17:54:58 - when you're out on the streets without a jacket or without money or food and the temperature drops. it's a very threatening situation for youth. seton youth shelters has two locations in virginia beach for kids between age nine and seventeen. there's one shelter for girls and one for boys. we were invited to the girls shelter...where residents were painting their nails with one of their case managers.

throughout hampton roads. we'll have all this information, including phone numbers, on wavy.com. i'm liz palka, 10 on your side. a judge says all evidence found in a murder suspect's apartment is valid in court. she denied the motion to supress evidence in the case against jesse matthew junior. matthew faces a capital murder charge in the death of hannah graham. in 2014, the university of virginia student disappeared from charlottesville. investigators found her remains in albemarle county. matthew's attorney asked the judge to disallow a cellphone, paycheck, cigar tip, toothbrush and more. police had not listed those items in a search warrant, but the judge says the officers were within their bounds. matthew also faces a first degree murder charge in the 2009 death of virginia tech student morgan harrington. still to come, a former sailor is going to prison for a year and a half. you'll hear why next.

a norfolk judge has sentenced a former sailor to 18 months in prison. 22-year-old donald mcmanus pleaded guilty to smuggling heroin onto the u-s-s george h-w bush last year. the connecticut man and his wife smuggled the drug and syringes on board in february. he then sold some to another sailor who overdosed. in a news release, prosecutors say mcmanus is no longer a sailor. it did not say whether investigators charged his wife. a navy sailor will spend more than two years in prison for telling a malaysian defense contractor about classified ship schedules. a judge in san diego sentenced the first of nine defendents to 27 months behind bars, today. petty officer 1st class daniel layug told the court he made a mistake-- and greed led navy could still court martial him, if it decides to pursue a case.

following an f-16 crash in central arizona. the fighting falcon took off from luke air force base and crashed about two hours north near bagdad. the air force says crews found the wrecked plane today, but we have not heard about the pilot. the jet was part of the 56th fighter wing at luke. we'll let you know as soon as we get an update. first court appearance today. police say 28-year-old kahlid mohamed abdalla dropped a package outside of gate 5 at j-e-b little creek-fort story in virginia beach. investigators picked him up shortly afterwards. today in court, his parents told the judge he has a history of mental illness. the judge told them he will go through a mental evaluation to determine if he's competent to stand trail. he's in jail without bond. police have not yet said

another car in the lot. clifton died in the parking lot. the military plans to test water in chesapeake for contamination. we're working to find out when that will happen. tests at naval auxiliary landing field fentress found high levels of p-f-c in the water. it's a chemical the navy uses to fight fires. the military has provided the 50 employees there with drinking water. the city says it's helping the navy investigate, and the issue only affects well water -- not the city water system. a regional director of the e-p-a has stepped down over a poisoned water crisis in michigan. in flint, toxic levels of lead have seeped into the water. tests have found the potentially deadly element in the blood of some children there. getting residents clean drinking water has become a national effort -- even getting attention from president obama. residents are placing most of the blame on the michigan governor rick snyder. still to come-- the "coolest" trend in sculpture, gaining popularity, one leg at a

a virginia lawmaker wants to make it easier for victims of domestic violence to get guns for protection. republican delegate, todd gilbert, proposed the bill today. it would allow people under protective orders to carry a concealed gun without a permit for 45 days. he says this would help women -- who could cut through red tape to arm themselves. democratic governor terry mcauliffe has said he will veto any bills that ease up on virginia's gun laws. we know domestic violence affects hundreds of families in our area. so we're looking into how others are working to help the victims. 10 on your side's anita blanton has the story. first responders helped save a dog trapped on the ice in henrico county today. firefighters sent us these pictures from the rescue. they say crews put on special suits to stay warm and dry. they went out onto the frozen pond-- and put the dog on a leash. they say everyone made it back to shore safely. a homeowner in the florida keys found a surprise guest in his pool. check it out -- an eight foot crocodile. sheriff's deputies and wildlife officials came in to capture the croc. when he saw them there, he actually sauntered out of the pool and broke for the ocean. a spokesperson for the sheriff says crocodile sightings are not unusual, although they were almost killed to extinction. there are only two specicies in the u-s both of them exist in south florida. there's a quirky trend in outdoor art hitting minnesota this season. people are freezing their
