tune into wavy news 10 today - from 4:30 to 7 for all your news, weather, and traffic. plus, there's two more hours of coverage on fox-43. tonight - we're assessing the damage after a massive 3-alarm fire last night in ocean view. chopper ten was high above the scene this morning - you can see a big hole now in what was a dense willoughby spit neighborhood. this morning - smoke still billowed from the debris. four buildings are completely destroyed. four others structures are damaged. a lot of property even cars are completely frozen as water from fire hoses hit the cold air. the red cross says the fire displaced about 30 families. some lost entire condos or homes, others, live in buildings that sustained damage. 10 on your side's matt gregory spoke to a man - as firefighters began evacuating people living in the affected apartments by the dozen. deanna, 24 hours later and a block of ocean view avenue remains closed. the clean up begins, but so do the

in norfolk matt gregory 10 on your side as we mentioned, the red cross is helping about 30 families. they provided shelter for the victims last night at the scene. today, volunteers set up a resource center at warm place to get out of the cold. any other people impacted by the fire can give them a call for help. many of you sent in photos and videos of the fire - we've put them together in a slideshow. you can find it on wavy dot com. we have new video of a house fire in newport news. it's a story we first told you about last night on wavy news 10 at 11. a family got out of the burning house safely. firefighters went to this house on jonathan court in newport news just after eight last night. as you can see -- the home is badly damaged. the fire is still under investigation. people made it safely out of a fire on parkview avenue in norfolk early this morning. we've learned the power was knocked out for hours after the fire started. nobody was hurt in that fire.

went to another fire this afternoon. we've learned smoke and flames were coming out of the home on norview avenue. the fire was under control about 30 minutes after. two people were shot overnight in norfolk. we've learned the shooting happened near brambleton and tidewater just before 2. one person was shot in the hand, the other person in the leg. both had to go to the hospital. we're working to find out more information about a suspect. newport news police are investigating a meth lab bust on middle sex road. the call first came into 9-1-1 as a shooting...then dispatchers were told a shooting didn't happen, and police weren't needed. but, when officers got to the house, the started an investigation and found meth was being made inside the house. three adults lived at the home. they were all evacuated. so far there haven't been any arrests - but police continue to look into what happened. tonight a texas judge says there's no sign of foul play in the death of u.s. supreme court justice antonin scalia. the 79-year-old was on a hunting trip when he was found dead in his room at a west texas ranch saturday morning.

correspondent casey stegall reports - a political fight is brewing over scalia's vacant seat on the nation's highest court. flags at half staff sunday...in honor of supreme court justice antonin scalia... from the supreme court chambers... to the texas ranch where he died saturday...on a hunting trip. late sunday scalia's body left texas for virginia. clement says: "i'm quite confident that law students will be reading justice scalia opinions a century from now." at the nation's highest court...colleagues are offering praise for scalia...who they affectionately called "nino." liberal justice ruth bader ginsburg...saying she and her conservative colleague were - quote - 'best buddies" for more than thirty years. meantime, justice scalia's passing leaves a supreme court now split between president obama says he plans to nominate a justice to fill the vacancy. and democrats say they support that. however, republicans say presidential campaign and somebody is going to win that and the person who wins that is going to have the right to replace justice scalia whether a democrat or republican." clinton says: "it is outrageous that republicans in the senate and on the campaign trail have already pledged to conservatives without a

protections of veteran teachers. the challenged law ends protections for veteran teachers against what people call subjective decisions of administrators. teachers can be fired for poor performance, immorality and insubordination. as we continue to see below freezing temperatures, people without a place to stay are looking to local churches and shelters. church of saint therese in chesapeake hosted those needing a place to stay over the last week. a lot of churches across hampton roads participates to help give the homeless temporary shelter. father kevin o'brien says its a way to help those in need. c0002 21.21 we help them have upwards of 65 people stay at the church when they host those needing a

police are searching for two people in connection with the shooting of a mississippi police officer. corporal derrick couch was shot in the head while investigating a

the two suspects walking into the convenience store. according to officials... the suspects appear to have separated after the robbery and shooting. corporal couch was taken to regional medical center... where he remains in critical condition. five people are dead after an accident saturday when their car plunged off the road into a canal in sweden. police say all five victims were british citizens, men between the ages of 20 and 35. authorities say the road was slippery and it was dark when the car drove capital. a 60-car crash on interstate-65 in indiana hurt at least a dozen people this afternoon. icy conditions and low visibility may have caused the pile-up. at least one person had to be cut out of his car. some drivers and passengers were taken to area restaurants and an area fairground to warm up before getting back on the road. the interstate's northbound lanes reopened at about six p-m

norwood and joyce fell in love during world war ii -- a misunderstanding pulled them apart. ivan watson has this lost love story...70 years later. norwood thomas never stopped thinking about joyce morris. the pair first met in 1944. she, a 17-year-old british girl he, a 21-year-old paratrooper for the u.s. forces. young love blossomed. (joyce) "i romance was interrupted - when thomas was deployed to normandy to fight in world war ii. after the war, he returned to the u.s and invited morris to join him. but she misunderstood his letter and thought he was already married - so she refused his invitation separate ways. they thomas eventually became a widower morris got divorced. last year, one of her
