the former governor of florida thanked his family and supporters -- especially his father president george h-w bush. businessman and republican frontrunner donald trump came out on top in that south carolina primary. trump has received at least 32-percent of the vote. he's followed by texas senator ted cruz and florida senator marco rubio currently tied with at least 22-percent. the bottom three rank: jeb bush, ohio governor john kasich and doctor ben carson. more breaking news -- vermont senator bernie sanders is coming to norfolk. the democratic presidential candidate will be holding a rally at the scope arena. his campaign says he will be in town tuesday, and the doors open at 9:30 in the morning. tickets are not required. the event is free and open to the public. hillary clinton earned a win with nevada voters in

sheriff tony perry/ camden county, n.c. 17:51:42 "very dedicated to the community always wants to elp his fellow methodist church." 17:51:54 sheriff tony perry tells 10 on your side, the church will have an offering for captain jim tomorrow morning. new at 10. elizabeth city police are investigating a deadly crash near elizabeth city state university. it happened around 1:40 this morning on halstead boulevard. they say 35-year-old jason guglielmini ran off the road and into a tree. investigators say he crashed into the brick wall surrounding campus. at this point, they believe speed played a factor. all new tonight. a group spent the afternoon protesting the virginia beach police department. the mother of india kager and her supporters demonstrated outside the 7-eleven on lynnhaven parkway today. that's the intersection near salem road -- where police opened fire last year on the vehicle 35-year-old angelo perry sitting in. their

them but was not hurt. police say perry shot at them before they returned fire. kager's mother, gina best, tells us police had no right to open fire on the car while her daughter and the baby were inside. police tell us they had perry under surveillance because they connected him to a homicide in the green run area last year. as officers approached him september 5th, they say he started shooting. last night we told you kager's mother is calling for the justice department to get involved and demanded to see surveillance video from the 7-eleven. police say they can't release any evidence while the commonwealth's attorney is investigating. late this afternoon, virginia beach police put this statement on it's twitter page - it reads: "on behalf of chief cervera the vbpd wishes to thank the members of the community and 7-11 for their support over the last two days." learn more about the background of this case by searching for this story on wavy dot com. all new tonight. virginia beach police say they're investigating a motel robbery at the

just before 12:30 today, they say someone went into a room at the super 8 on atlantic avenue and stole cash. they say that person may have been armed. police could not tell us whether anyone was inside or hurt. dispatchers say they took one person into custody, but police could not confirm that. a fairfax county judge has dismissed a lawsuit -- challenging protections for l-g- b-t students in public schools. activists and a student sued the school board in december. it had banned discrimination against gay and transgendered students -- protections which hadn't existed before. opponents said -- the changes would make it too easy for students of the opposite sex to use the wrong restroom. the washington post reports they plan to appeal. meanwhile a federal appeals court in richmond is deciding on a motion in the case of a local transgender student. gavin grimm from gloucester county was born a girl but identifies as a boy. the school board has barred him from using the boys restroom, and he's fighting that decision. all new tonight. a federal judge has ordered a woman at the center of a debunked

all questions from lawyers. the ruling is part of a civil suit against rolling stone and one of its authors. in 20-14, they published an article detailing the sexual assault of a woman known only as jackie. investigators later proved it false, and a school official sued. jackie must submit a deposition on april 5th. the judge also set a trial date for october. thousands paid their respects to supreme court justice antonin scalia today. bells ringing family, friends, even vice president joe biden attended his funeral in washington, d-c. scalia's son, a catholic priest, led mass at the basilica of the national shrine of the immaculate conception. peninsula -- firefighters say someone was hurt trying to escape a kitchen fire in newport news. officers say that person jumped out a window and medics are taking that person to the hospital. they expect that person to recover. around 9:15, crews say they got calls for a fire at an apartment building on 12th street, near the intersection with jefferson avenue. they say they say smoke coming from a home, and they could hear a smoke alarm sounding. no one else was hurt. we'll let you know as soon as we have an update. new tonight. four people can't stay at home tonight, due to a fire in virginia beach. just before one this afternoon, firefighters say they found a burning mobile home on baker road. that is right near the intersection with northampton boulevard. they say the fire started in a bedroom. crews got it under control, but the home was ruined. no one was hurt, and they're still looking into the cause. all new. williamsburg firefighters say no one was hurt when a motel found a small fire in a third floor room. they put it out, and now they're looking for the

fire officials could not tell us whether they moved anyone staying there. we told you last week, the city plans down soon. firefighters in hampton say medics took two people to the hospital after a garage fire. they say it happened around 8:30 this morning on watkins drive. that's the neighborhood between briarfield road and power plant parkway. firefighters say both people breathed in smoke, but they should survive. they say smoke damaged the home, but they kept the fire to the garage. investigators are trying to figure out how a small fire started in portsmouth. this is off airline boulevard near chowan drive. the chief tells us chesapeake firefighters noticed heavy smoke coming from an auto store around nine this morning. he says crews got it under control right away and no one had to go to the hospital. we'll let you know as soon as we have more information. repairs for local beaches could start this summer. the next step towards rebuilding broken dunes in dare county. dozens of people protest what they call coal ash

all new tonight. fixing beach erosion on hatteras island is one step closer to reality. this is video from hatteras last week -- at the cape hatteras motel in buxton. you can see the water washed away the dunes -- and flooded the streets. since then, the national park service has approved a special use permit for dare county. it's to protect n-c 12 from flooding. now state officials say it just needs a permit from the corps of engineers. the project would pump sand along part of the island. if all goes as plan, the county manager says it could start in june. hundreds of protests gathered at the virginia state capitol today. they were fighting a recent decision about coal ash. the state-approved permit would allow dominion virginia power to drain
