portsmouth fire union president was told not to come into work. and - taped off - we'll tell you the reason this confederate monument has yellow tape surrounding it. developing news out of norfolk, that's where police says someone shot and killed a 38 year old man then drove off. it happened this afternoon along kingston avenue between grove avenue and beaumont street. 10 on your side's matt gregory has the latest on the investigation and why police need your help. deanna, norfolk police say tonight they are looking for a blue or gray compact car. they say the front end of the car is bashed in. the person inside the car is armed and dangerous. just across the street from apollo desantos' house. a van driven by a 38 year old man crashed in to a wall. apollo desantos /lives across the street c0033 1:31:34 "i was at my computer and i thought somebody was knocking at the door." 1:31:37] what desantos and his neighbors didn't know is that someone shot the driver. apollo desantos 20 years and nothing like this happen over here." 1:31:50

police say if you see the grey or blue car with front end damage, call police. the people inside are believed to be armed and dangerous. matt gregory 10 on your side. police need your help to find the person responsible for shooting a man in hampton. we know the man was found on nickerson boulevard around 3:30 this afternoon. officers say he has life threatening injuries. he was taken to the hospital. the shooting is still under investigation. and to a third shooting -- this time in newport news. just before 2:30 this morning police found two people shot at a party. a 17-year-old newport news teenager was shot in the back and his left thigh - he's in the hospital with what's considered life-threatening injuries. the second person an 18-year-old hampton woman was shot in the leg. police still need your help to find the man they think is responsible. if you have information about any of these shootings, call the crime line. we have a follow-up to a story we first brought to

take a look at this new video of a big paint spill in chesapeake. you can see dozens of blue and white buckets in the south hill community. fire investigators believe someone poured as much as 500-gallons of paint into the ditches there. yesterday, an environmental cleaning crew was called in to help. investigators say whoever dumped the paint may have been trying to use the buckets for scrap metal. it's another chilly night here in hampton roads. but, those temperatures will start warming up in the next 48 hours... here's a live look from towercam 10.. today the sun was shining, definitely a beautiful day outside. meteorologist ashley baylor is in the super doppler weather center to let us know how warm those temperatures will get. overnight: mostly cloudy with passing rain showers. lows: mid-30s. highs: upper-40s. winds: ne 5-10 mph. monday: mostly sunny. nice and mild! highs: near 60. winds: light sw.

don't forget to always stay connected through our wavy weather app. it's free for all apple and android users. sources confirm a fire fighter has been suspended for two days - for speaking with the media - including to 10 on your side. a spokesperson for the local fire union tells us city manager lydia pettis patton handed down the suspension. we've also confirmed through sources that firefighter is rusty quillin. quillin is president of the local fire union. he spoke to 10 on your side in november and december about staffing shortges. the fire union spokesman says they're currently seeking legal advice on what to do next. we've reached out to spokesperson for the city of portsmouth - we'll let you know when we hear back. two volunteer firefighters in northern virginia are suspended after taking an 18-month-old girl to the hospital in a fire engine. according to our affiliate - the suspended firefighters were first on the scene - because the little girl was having a seizure. they work for the falmouth volunteer fire

north carolina governor pat mccrory and democratic attorney general roy cooper are expected to face each other in the governor's race this fall - but they have to win their primary races march 15th. ken spaulding - a democrat and republican robert brawley are running tough primary campaigns. spaulding continues to criticize cooper for defending in court election laws passed by state lawmakers. while brawley is making interstate tolls a big issue for his campaign. republican state senator jill holtzman vogel says she's going to run for virginia's next lieutenant governor. the seat is up next year. vogel was re-elected to her third term in the state senate in november. she represents the city of winchester and areas nearby. vogel would be the first republican female nominee for statewide office since 1989. we're just getting started here on wavy news 10 - still ahead. confederate debate - two cities in the south have

flying over the north carolina state capitol in downtown raleigh today. it's in honor of confederate flag day. in january - the sons of the confederate veterans requested the flag be flown today. its underneath the north carolina state flag on other days - including in honor of robert e. lee's birthday. several confederate monuments have been defaced in north carolina's state capital recently. a group of graduate students in savannah, georgia led a silent protest against the removal of a confederate monument. caution tape surrounded the confederate memorial this morning. police say students used chalk to write messages around the memorial - asking the public to value historic preservation before demolition. city officials say no specific monuments are up for demolition. but the students say they want to create a public dialogue about not turning a blind eye to monument removals - no matter the context. s/cornelia dodge/grad student :06 "the big message is opening a dialogue to talk about historic preservation, confederate monuments, and erasing history." s/erin ward/grad student :08 "so we were hoping

police say the markings were removable and there was no damage to the monument. students say they have created social media accounts titled "erasing history" to continue to spread their message. the attorney for former taliban prisoner, army sergeant bowe bergdahl, wants to meet with donald trump. on the campaign trail, trump has been calling bergdahl a traitor. bergdahl was held captive for five years before his release in 20-14 -- the u-s released five taliban prisoners in return. but bergdahl is now facing desertion charges... for leaving his unit in afghanistan before his capture. bergdahl's attorney sent a letter to trump today (saturday), saying he wants to interview trump about those statements. the attorney also said bergdahl's defense team may end up deposing trump. we're following a time saver traffic update for you this evening. traffic is moving a lot smoother along interstate 264 in norfolk. just before 9 this morning - a call came into police saying a car caught on fire near the military highway

it's been nearly two weeks since deadly tornadoes moved across the commonwealth. now - researchers say they've come up with a way to predict the likelihood of tornadoes two or three weeks in advance. researchers say this is a step in the right direction to better warn people of the severe storms. on average 80 americans are killed a year from tornadoes. a college of dupage meteorology professor says they found a link between tornado activity and complicated atmostpheric wave patterns. he says the pattern is dependable -

the coast guard and virginia port authority hosted the 10th annual search and rescue forum. the event wrapped yesterday at the marina at the crown plaza in hampton. state and local safety agencies, first responders and their vessels were there for five days. there were several exercises between the monitor-merrimac memorial bridge- tunnel and the hampton roads bridge tunnel. today - people were at norfolk collegiate high school for the a corn hole tournament, raising money for susan g. komen tidewater. 400 people were at the event. there was an open discussion at hampton university about domestic violence today. keynote speaker kemba smith pradia talked about being associated with the wrong crowd, including a four-year relationship with a major figure in a crack cocaine ring. pradia was sentenced to 24-and- a-half years in federal prison. after serving 6 and a half years - she received clemency from president

thousands of law enforcement officers gathered to remember a north texas police officer shot and killed earlier this week. a public memorial was held at pennington field stadium in bedford for officer david hofer. officer hofer was gunned down tuesday while responding to reports of shots fired in a park. the suspect - jorge brian gonzalez - was fatally shot by other officers after police say he ambushed hofer and his partner. the euless police chief and hofer's fianc0 remembered him as a "genuine spirit" who "led with his heart." s/chief michael brown/euless police department :17 "you can say that dave hofer was one of those

such quantities that you never knew which one he was using at any given time." officer hofer was a former new york city police officer, but friends say he moved to dallas to be in a "safer" city and start a family. donations are being accepted for officer hofer's family on behalf of the euless police benevolent organization. it's been a week since rookie police officer, ashley guindon was shot to death in prince william county. guindon was on the first day of the job - when she was shot to death while responding to a domestic argument in woodbridge. people in springfield, massaschusetts are honoring guindon. a wake is scheduled for tomorrow - her funeral is monday in west springfield. she was 28 years old. newport news police are going to be looking for people who are drinking and driving this weekend. until 2:30 tomorrow morning - additional officers will be patroling where people are most likely to be drinking or under the influence of drugs. the dui patrol is through a division of motor vehicles traffic safety

officials say they will not let people know the exact locations of the patrol. one person was injured today after an explosion at a texas refinery. police say the explosion happened inside the pasadena refining system this morning when a compressor flashed and released diesel fuel. one person was hospitalized. plant officials told authorities there was no danger to the public and no chemicals were released. vance mitchell/pasadena police department :23 "we were starting a compressor, and during the starting of the compressor, there was a release. we know which determine the details of what happened as soon as the area is safe for us to be at the equipment." police say an investigation to determine a more exact cause will be conducted once the equipment is deemed safe. the washburn tunnel - which is nearby and runs beneath the houston ship channel - was closed in both directions.

gathered in downtown portland, oregon today to protest the jailing of oregon occupation leader ammon bundy. at least 50 people participated in the rally demanding the release of bundy and other jailed occupiers. on january 2, bundy led the armed takeover of the malheur national wildlife refuge in oregon to protest federal control over public land. he and 24 others were indicted on felony charges and have been in jail for more than a month. protesters claim the occupiers didn't receive justice and were treated unfairly by the government. search and rescue teams recovered four bodies today in the waters between the indonesian islands of bali and java, where a ferry capsized friday. people watching the doomed ferry were yelling as it tipped over. video showed passengers standing on the side of the ferry, then jumping into the sea as it sank quickly in calm waters. officials said 71 people were rescued. the cause of the disaster was under investigation. up next - bisons on the loose - the warning message officers have for

more than a dozen bison broke free from their pen this morning and wandered the countryside in southeast wisconsin. 17 bison escaped from an enclosure near kenosha... which is located between chicago and milwaukee. deputies have already cornered 10 of the animals, but the remaining 7 are still out and about. drivers are being warned to drive with caution... as an encounter with one of these two-thousand pound animals could be deadly. the ceremonial start of the world's most famous sled dog race is underway. the iditarod parade of mushers and their furry teams glided through downtown anchorage today. the ceremonial course is

say it was cut down to three miles because of the warm winter and lack of snow. the real competition starts on sunday in willow - which is about 50 miles north of anchorage. eighty-five competitors will race nearly one-thousand miles to nome - a town on the alaskan west coast. the winner is expected to arrive in nome nine days after the start. one of pluto's most recognizable features may be covered in snow. nasa's new horizons team shared these images of mountains covered in frozen methane. these snow-covered peaks stand out against the deep red color of the dwarf planet's plain. examination of images captured by new horizons' historic flyby in july 20-15 suggests the bright material is mostly made of methane ice. scientists say the methane ice may act like water does in earth's atmosphere, condensing as frost and falling like snow. scientists discovered a new species of octopus while on a deep sea dive near hawaii. look at this little guy.

a rock more than 14-thousand feet below the ocean's surface. no one's ever seen this kind of octopod before. some of his unique features includes a lack of pigment cells - hence the ghostlike appearance. the octopus also has all of its suckers in one row on each arm - rather than the typical two rows. the original purpose of the dive was to try to collect rock samples. but hey - discovering a new species along the way is a bonus. dozens of people competed in key west's annual conch (konk) shell blowing contest today... hundreds of spectators watched contestants ranging from pre-teens to seniors try to make music with the conch shells. contestants were judged on the quality, duration, loudness, and novelty of the sounds they made. the fluted, pink-lined conch shell has been a symbol of the florida keys for generations and was first used by sailors as a signaling device. when the the quirky challenge ended, corey fritz was crowned winner of the men's division while delaware native jayne challman was named the winner of
