storm watches in place for the little pencil the parts of the fence around williams burg and air is off to the west that james city county also the northern neck under the watch and then down to the south you can see surrey sussex southampton basically right around franklin wes out through i ninety five the winter storm watch a winter weather advisory south of that and in north carolina and then out to the west around south boston and lynchburg a winter storm warning western parts of virginia northern virginia bracing for a tremendous amount of snow maybe a couple of feet in some areas fourteen to twenty inches expected for several locations out there that storm system coming together over taxes will continue to watch is the work he's put in and through our area through the day into saturday and then exits late saturday temperatures are currently in the upper twenty s to low and mid thirties so it's not too terribly cold out there relative to what we've seen the past few mornings but with the winds still feeling my teens and twenties you
6:01 am
definitely want to bundle up temperatures today topping out in the mid thirties and we will enjoy a lot of sunshine so hang in there today's your day to get your props for this next storm system coming in to break down the timing will talk about the impacts and snowfall amounts with my next update. check the date right now here's ashley. all right craig very very busy this morning on the roads hadn't been able station norfolk western avenue issue that just popped up on fixed before going to be between tidewater and little creek road to check on that and get a full update for you here in just a few minutes but for now let's talk about what's already working with has been working for a little while now. here's a live within five sixty four westbound traffic headed to the runway tunnel and out to naval station norfolk. we do have yet another issue working here on the right shoulder right there into the flashing lights are due to an accident right before the runway tunnel. adding to the backups and speaking of the backups as we head to a second camera delays are actually beginning at chesapeake boulevard on sixty four west
6:02 am
looks like on thesi lanes especially here which is two miles away from the interest of five sixty four so a very slow go this morning and again another issue up here tidewater check on that give you an update in just a bit. now we head back to the traffic network map to make our way to sixty four from bay avenue is showing kind of a yellowish spot here but it really should be maybe a warrant or even read at this point. traffic headed to bay avenue one sixty four west is backed up there headed to the basement this morning. also expect delays on green beast read that the bulk of our heavy traffic right now again checking on that issue and tidewater and sixty four and have an update in just a bit too much at this hour there are several school delays or scrolling at the bottom of your screen usually know that and you can also head over to our website thirteen years now dot com and click on the top which is closing and the lacy can see what schools are affected by this all morning long we've been telling you that the side roads could be a big problem for us as racists and parker is lived in norfolk
6:03 am
look around. well i mean it's not a huge problem but it's something you definitely want to be aware of as you head out this way we are right here actually in front of the station because it was spot out front that you show you about one of the spot is out here and what is out now. this was one you can see you can feel a little bit of snow right here still on the street. it's a little sluggish to put your butt over top of that now that what you can see let me show you as richie's out this way in the middle there some spots that have just a little sheen of ice so that you can't really see the white see the watch out for those spots things like that also not just the roads but on the sidewalks i noticed some spots coming and that sidewalks had little bits of ice on them and a lot of people are going to hang out kids to school. many people heading to the grocery store today cuz that's what they do before storm definitely be careful about that this morning you want to watch out for the roads and the sidewalks and just use a little extra caution just be careful out there it's not snow covered is not nice cover but there's patches
6:04 am
head out in the morning to definitely be careful as you head out guys aren't they so sad that i'm now six o five a new this morning north carolina state crews are already working to get the roads ready for the winter storm and cdot crews have been out about since yesterday working to put brine down on most of the major roads so far officials say they've been able to get most of the interstate and primary routes covered by now. now the crews will reply bright throughout the day today and the teams will go into active salting once the snow falls and if you have to drive on slick roads experts say do not use cruise control instead the distance or increase the distance between you and the front of the other car that is in front of you to get more time to stop to make any sudden moves accelerate and brake slowly if you do slide stare into the direction of the skid with a plan on flying over the weekend there's little bit of good news for you many airlines are prepping for the winter storm by letting you change your flight without a fee
6:05 am
refunds. so if you bought your ticket before january twenty eight on american for example they're letting you change your flight without a fee south and southwest that never charges a ticket fee or change for you to get delta is offering a free flight change for a refund if you are headed somewhere that the storm is hitting so be sure to check your airline's website for all of those ropes. well now's the time to download our free weather caster and get him to grow the most accurate forecasts and write your smartphone to great app downloaded for free at the app store and on will play well even this dna studies show women continue to make less than men in soho was better actually saving money i have an idea i know the answer may surprise you and we'll take you live outside of newport news yeah this from a mobile weather lab right now cruising the streets looking for

and surrey all under the winter storm watch winter weather advisory for roanoke rapids on down south the rocky mountain west to get that eerie and pink winter storm warning as they are bracing for the snow that's going to roll in early tomorrow morning. today a good day and i know there are some schools that are on delay in some schools have been canceled due to the snow showers and flurries we saw last night so the roads a little slick in spots have been scrolling that information for the schools that are in business today partly cloudy is with the kids ready for the bus stops and the temperatures will be warming up you know what those numbers did not update when i see highs today in the mid thirties so pretty close to that around thirty five or so i think for the afternoon high officially at the airport by richmond thirty eight you can see that k patterson same thirty four dc. this is the quiet before the storm that is going to roll in tomorrow and into saturday so today's a great day to take your things if you need to do a few things around the house maybe grab a
6:10 am
whatever's good idea to do that even if we don't get a tremendous amount of snow tomorrow it's going to be wet will see a mix with rain and then the wind so one of those days we may not want to be spending a lot of time out on the roads anyway take a look here at the seven day forecast i do anticipate some significant snowfall in the area is going to talk more about that i will show you my updated snowfall forecast map with my next update in just couple minutes right now with a new accident out there with his flashlight over ashley shoulders what's going on. well chris the worst thing about this is that it's in the midst of the backups headed to naval station norfolk. so take a look at this if you're headed to the base we now have a multi vehicle crash sixty four westbound outside lane at little creek road. right now three of the four westbound lanes of the outside set are blocked as you know traffic is back in the chesapeake boulevard and has been headed toward naval station norfolk. this will only add to the back up
6:11 am
lane certainly do so as you see that starting with the notable but had the five sixty four with a strap in the outside set is going to be a mess for a little while so stick with this i don't have the latest we arrive on sixty four west of norfolk and headed to naval station norfolk. coming up next tonight things ashley looks you get when you mix the concept of stained glass

all eyes will be on wall street later today the major indices will open lower this morning overnight late trading wiped out modest gains in the asian markets a culprit behind global sell off plunging oil prices yesterday were prices on wall street so there were single day drop since september a barrel of crude oil is now less than twenty seven dollars those prices haven't been seen since two thousand for stocks bounced back by the closing bell but experts say things will be rocky until the oil market gets back to normal. good morning america is taking a closer look at the wild ride we've seen on wall street lately cash the report seven o'clock right after daybreak and this morning the white house says that on average women earn seventy eight cents. alas it was after f seventy eight cents for every dollar and manners but a woman may still end up with more money than men so why is that apparently women live longer according to science so they have more time to earn more money on average women save about twenty percent more than men do and some studies say that women are better at investing

today mostly sunny still chilly but it's a great day to prep for the weekend whether we know that a storm systems coming the other we know it's going to parties very messy weather across the region and this system friday in to saturday's going to produce snow kind of mix for parts of the area will see rain or a mixed terrain close to the coasts and wind is going to be an issue for much of the area as the storm's center tracks over looking at gusts up to about thirty five maybe forty mph times over the weekend that could ride the tides as well so we're watching for that lead to chances for snow across the metro one at the onset it could be some mix or snow changing over to rain and then at the and saturday as the system pulls away. colder air coming in the back side of it so that's what we're looking at in general today lots of sunshine temperatures getting up mid thirties maybe mid to upper thirties for the downtown area. i've got some upper level energy here
6:17 am
pressure tracking is down across texas and that is good to develop in a swing through our area we do have winter storm watch now for the little prince of the northern neck parts that and so williamsburg james city county westward down through right around franklin and west farther to the west route across western parts of virginia north carolina winter storm warning is winter weather advisories just off to the southwest in the north carolina so funny to watch over the next couple days future cash shows the clouds to roll in tomorrow morning and there's a wintry weather coming in i think some mixing initially and then as we go into the afternoon you'll see the next kind of transitioning to rain. still better chances for snow north and west so northern neck middle peninsula in williamsburg area out towards richmond you could see more snow even into the afternoon eventually though that's going to transition to rain as warmer air moves in to get that sleet line or a little bit of mixing and then that
6:18 am
sets a little farther to the north as we go overnight friday and again warmer air gets drawn and the winds increase friday night into saturday. initially winds gusting up thirty to thirty five but we could see some got closer to forty as the low tracks through and on the backside to see that colder air pouring on the backside of the system so we will continue to watch it with a chance for a few more snow showers later on saturday and saturday evening it winds down. here's a look at the snow ranges in general were talkin mami and trace to two inches of snow south side just out to the west as big as you go farther up the peninsula the middle peninsula northern neck you're looking at that two three maybe four to five inches farther to the west up to six then richmond area six to twelve north the rich when you're looking at ten to fourteen an even heavier amounts off to the west of that so plenty to watch your temper this morning in the low thirties and a hike today into upper thirties will see low forties tomorrow
6:19 am
before that cold air comes in the back side and temps drop back to freezing tonight an update on the accident out there ashley young traffic really picking up. oh yeah greg you know the focus has been that base traffic this morning really since before we even hit five o'clock. it is still the focus at this point in the morning as we take a look in at an accident that's working in the midst of the backups headed for naval station norfolk in norfolk sixty four west in the outside lanes between tidewater and little creek a multi vehicle crash you can see it's very busy here blocking every lane except for one so you can see the three left lanes blocked to the far right lane is still open behind this point there is a two mile backup starting in chesapeake boulevard in cbi is to blame the action moving a little bit better as you head to five sixty four one two gallon five sixty four it's still a mess there to attend to our second camera is one to show you five sixty four west approaching the runway tunnel not been good news here we did have another accident just before
6:20 am
the really tall right now the right shoulder that has cleared but as you can see the backups have nots of course base traffic still the big issue of the morning i'll have the latest for you coming up at six thirty our ashleigh you know we were mostly spared here in our area but this take a look at live pictures from washington d c traffic just a standstill all you see brake lights right there people just sitting in traffic and roads are already wet and snow there overnight. we're tracking the upcoming storm that's going to hit the entire east coast don't forget those with only schooling at the bottom of your screen was a very strange body that's far bigger than the earth apparently the details on

6:27 am
around we saw some of that on some of the roads especially from the more rural areas so we're continuing to watch at the skies are clear right now and today's kena catch her breath relax kind of day take care what you need to get taken care of before tomorrow and saturday when our next system rolls and and you could see this colorful map behind me lit up here isn't purple under a winter storm watch that includes the northern neck middle peninsula williamsburg james city county out to the west down through the franklin area southampton sussex and surrey and in the northeast north carolina northampton county there areas in pink. a winter storm warning very heavy snow set for that part of the region and out of the south a winter weather advisory. we had the snow last night it's gone now enjoy some sunshine so today again the time to get things taken care of before this next system comes rolling through tomorrow in this saturday that's going to bring with it a whole bunch of different conditions with the heavy snow inland and mix to rain near the coast
6:28 am
temperatures this morning in the thirties you have the wind chills in the twenties and as we kick it through the day you can see temperatures topping out mid to upper thirties and sit on the back more details on this next storm system in a few minutes here's ash. all right craig as we continue to watch traffic issues across i have a new one to report and this one is in newport news to take a live look at see a multi vehicle accident six sixty four southbound at thirty nine three which is about maybe three or four miles away from the monitor merrimack you can see here the right lane is clearly blocks of course the right shoulder is crews respond at least a half mile back up to roanoke avenue and i think that'll grow as the morning progresses so keep an eye on this but for now at least give yourself enough time to get to that half mile backup on the second camera and in norfolk. still watching the scene of a multi vehicle crash in norfolk on sixty four west between tidewater and little creek in the outside for the blaze now the good news here does look like traffic conditions are
6:29 am
improving. initially we were down to one lane open passing the scene looks like now or maybe off to just one lane closed or maybe even one shoulder closer not entirely sure from the shock here but certainly improving in terms of our lanes being open but we're still sing backups coming up here the next few minutes i'll have the latest on your delays here and we are writing to naval station norfolk are ashley thank you for that. a bitter blast is heading right for hampton roads and the daybreak team is staying on top of the road conditions we saw flurries flying from the peninsula to the south side last night only marking the beginning of things to come. our lease brown has lived in the thirteen years now will the weather lab checking conditions across the region so where are you now and the reunion for you the more i have on the roads however we can see in the intersection of jefferson were in the area he wanted to

conditions south boston to lynchburg lots and lots of snow for that part of the commonwealth yesterday and yet the turnout thirty three for forecasts high we officially made up to thirty seven so the streak and are reset didn't quite make it a miss by one degree. very frustrating and talk to jeff last as it's okay it's just one degree and really the things that we mailed yesterday with the forecast the light snow showers in the florida came through during the evening right on cue so that was a very very important part of a forecast that was spot on what we're seeing today's cars are going to be mostly sunny kitchen prep done today temperatures in the mid thirties were talking about the weekend weather and i will have the full details. grab a quick cup of coffee and i will tell you all about that with my next update in just a couple minutes here's ashley. all right chris we'll take a look now at traffic conditions in a couple of spots big backups due to two separate accidents starting in newport news six sixty four south rate of thirty ninth street a multi vehicle crash blocked the right lane
6:37 am
the right shoulder you can see traffic quickly building behind it. at least a half mile back up but that's this point so expect delays if you're headed in the direction of the monitor merrimack and on our second camera back in norfolk a bit of improvement still working out there sixty four west in the outside lanes between tidewater and little creek another multi vehicle crash now in the clearing stages but we still have a two and a half mile back up to northview avenue. the good news though the dot has opened the hov lanes to all traffic so no restrictions that you usually see for the rush hour to try to alleviate some of those backups of your about to head out take those kids up to go hov lanes but no to what you get to naval station norfolk or at least on five sixty four west that still going to be back up all the way to the base not have the latest in your base traffic coming up in just eight minutes and ashley thank you all you have probably seen a lot of love and board fails trending

morning america will be live in washington d c coming up right after this newscast this morning he has been dubbed the miracle man. just this week twenty six killed justin smith got a chance to thank the hospital staff members who saved his life last winter someone found smith nearly frozen to death on the side of the road he had been out there for twelve hours the corner and police on the scene thought he was dead but doctors use the machine to warm up his behind. weeks went by before justin actually woke up and then he realized what happened to an elastic remember was waking up thirty days later my family or am not never heard anything like this is it's amazing it's something i've never heard of and i can't thank everyone enough. smith made a full recovery did not suffer any long lasting health effects doctor say that his core body temperature get this was in the mid sixty s we think it is the coldest body temperature on record us look
6:42 am
ever happened and how it is unbelievable to her. alright so the snowfall in our area still hit or miss depending on where you are i think we're going to see more hit than miss out to the west but near the coast i think there could be some folks may be a little disappointed at the base of some of the social media feedback bring the snow already but really looks like maybe a mix transitioning to rain and maybe a little bit more snow on the backside and too little watch for in general what you can expect today mostly sunny will be chilly temperatures mid to upper thirties when only around forty eight this time of year so it will be on the chilly side again. but today's a great day to prepare for the weekend weather and we talk about this weekend well friday and saturday storm it's going to produce a mass this we know whether it's more snow or rain it depends on where you are there will be a snow mix kind of starting off out to the west into the southwest as it gets closer to authentic will see increasing chances for that mix precipitation even around
6:43 am
hampton roads at the onset that should change over to rain and wind is going to be very likely as well so snowy mix when rain it's all gonna be in play over the weekend and there's two good chances for some snow. i think a little bit at the beginning and then on the backside is colder air comes in we'll see a transition but how much moisture is still around that's a big question is well so we're still going to be working over the next thirty six hours or so to really pin down all of the snowfall projections everything it's very fluid situation and it's very attractive pendant what i mean by that if the center of low pressure tracks say fifty miles to the south and east of what it's forecast to do that could produce more snow for hampton roads of the tracks fifty miles to the west it would be more rain in the last of the wintry weather. it really depends on exactly where that low is how strong it becomes that we you know we've got an event coming up. temperatures today in the mid maybe mid to upper thirties right now it's
6:44 am
an upper level energy back across kansas you can see some snow flying their bodies down across texas right here weary of low pressure is developing and that's going to come through here late friday into saturday bringing with it the wintry weather so let's take a look of the future cast you can see the clouds off to the southwest today and tonight tomorrow morning we see increasing clouds today mostly sunny. tonight mainly clear early becoming partly cloudy by sunrise the clouds really thicken up. here is seven am still off to the southwest and the morning commute probably gonna be fine but later in the morning and into the early afternoon we start to see more of that makes developing notice the snow out to the west these are the areas where we expect to see more significant accumulations and closer to the coast going to be mormon next to rain and for northeast north carolina just about all rain was going to be watching the winds increasing tomorrow night is the center of low pressure tracks through the area look
6:45 am
friday night into early saturday that makes line off to the northwest as the system pulls through. he start to see that colder air working in and pushing back towards the coast as a system pulls away so saturday night still some snow fly across the inland parts of the area out towards richmond. this is where the snow will likely add up and you can see some of the general range is where it's all snow were all wintry weather fourteen to twenty inches heavy snow around lynchburg up the northern virginia richmond area somewhere just north of richmond ten to twelve inches little farther to the east into the south. lesser amounts are a wee version might be two to three inches something like that which could also see four to five maybe six inches between williamsburg and richmond with the heavier amounts as you go and then closed and the roads more like a trace amount maybe a couple of inches if that colder air comes in on saturday and we get some more so we'll just be watching again continue to update you on those totals
6:46 am
were asked to see tide running high right now thirty two and north northwest winds at twelve highs today staying in the mid to upper thirty s mostly sunny again get your work done today in preparation for the weekend temperatures will stay cool sunday and monday back to normal a little warmer on tuesday ashley are a crazy question watching couple of crashes here on the traffic network when i give you the latest on both of them they're both still working but the big issue for you is how bad are the backups behind those accidents so give you a live look now a newport news eleven accident six sixty four southbound at thirty ninth street about three miles away from the monitor merrimack and this is a mile before you get to the accident the shot is right. aberdeen road as you can see traffic starting to back up after that we are headed to the southside matter but that was just talking to elise and headed back onto the self guided tour or take a job bt not the monitor merrimack because going to be sitting in at least a mile or so of heavy traffic as you pass an accident scene headed to
