the southwest ten eleven o'clock starts pushing to the southwest and then it comes up and i think the moisture over rides the metro area as we head towards noon take a look at this oh well we start off with snow were a wintry mix as the temperatures warm later this afternoon and transitions to rain the wind will increase in the rain could be heavy at times tonight i have so much to share with you a quick look here the seven day forecast there is light at the end of the tunnel sunday into monday but the next forty eight hours to say sixty hours very very messy and have more detail and here's ash our credo lot to watch with the weather conditions coming in here now with traffic not so much were still pretty calm and quiet around most of the area and will give you a live look now at a traffic camera as we take a look at traffic around the hr bt if you had from norfolk to hand in her sixty four west at thirteen zero which is about to eat too many to a half miles away from the hr btn you see things moving steadily they're also nice if you're headed east down
5:02 am
traffic network maps the only spot of watching the traffic is quickly growing and it's been like this for quite awhile now is five sixty four western naval station norfolk haven't even shown up yet on the traffic network mass but right now delays beginning roughly right around here at chambers field about halfway down by sixty four west and that will continue to grow as the morning progresses i'll certainly keep you posted coming up in the next few minutes we'll head to six sixty four will take traffic somewhat to newport news at monitor merrimack. i actually think he'll at this hour there are several schools are closed many schools are dismissing early the latest is under center with hands in their schooling all of them at the bottom of your screen you can also visit their teen years now the com for up to the closings and delays this winter weather like this always puts a strain on the power grid more people are home consuming more energy at dominion virginia power knows this so they're getting ready to make sure your power doesn't go out as a storm rolls through central park is live in norfolk with more on what dominion is going to do to prepare for
5:03 am
are out and the app mobile weather lab were preparing for the storm it turns out dominion is preparing as well in fact they've been preparing all week long until the crews are ready to go no matter what this storm brings in fact they are going to work around the clock if needed for their trucks are gassed up and supplied with everything they need light replacement poles transformers fuses but also things like change for their tires and cleats ice cleats so that they are prepared to drive walk climb poles anywhere they have to to get the job done and iniesta something else the customer should do is prepare before the storm she says that you guys can go on to the minions website that's tom dot com and the reeking going sunday for text alerts so something happens in the store where they lead to alert customers they can do that you're already prepared something else that she talked about but i really thought about it i was like ooh that's a good
5:04 am
this morning going to get gas get groceries whatever another place might want to visit the atm she says it's important to have cash in a storm and if we do lose electricity. a tmz are not going to work so now might be the time to do it but really she said the best advice be prepared and it's better no matter what the storm brings to be safe than sorry in norfolk said of parker thirteen years now safe than sorry thank you so much several right now sixty million americans are under winter weather alerts right now the bulls eye for the storm is focus squarely on washington d c forecasters are calling for eighteen to twenty four inches of snow there. the storm is already affecting areas to the west of us this morning making roads very slick gets it right there cars having a tough time getting traction there and take a look this woman there she took a tumble while crossing the street right in front of cars blizzard watches and warnings are posted from northern virginia to long island. good morning america's live up and down the east coast showing you the steps people are
5:05 am
their full report after daybreak right on track i haven't done your star shopping at switch would probably have not had with you may be completely out of a lot to look at how shops around and in roads are getting affected by the snow and we take you live outside now norfolk skyview got you covered cross and rose this morning elise brown is on
5:06 am
. and good morning welcome back to winter weather advisory now for the peninsula and four part to the southside suffolk an isle of wight done in the north carolina we have gates county hartford and also burton county under that winter weather advisory. he go farther up the peninsula and we talk james city county williamsburg not just a winter weather advisory but a winter storm warning and that also includes a little peninsula and the northern neck so lost or maxis you guys are in on this two out towards richmond emporia heavier snow expected out this way we're going to see snow in the mix starting transitioning to rain very
5:07 am
higher than normal. there's a high wind watch and a coastal flood watch for the coastal parts of our viewing area take a look now the storm system is approaching from the southwest and still outside of the thirteen years now viewing area. the rally starting to see at least a loss of snow and that's when mixed and the ground very quickly we've had some great live feeds coming out of charlotte's of the other areas out to the west where we have been tracking the snow quit with the g fs snow potential uses three saturday one am i you can see two and half inches of snow there you take it in his sunday little bit more potentially the rain will wash away a lot of what fall so i think we will see the snow and the snowfall amounts are pretty legit but again with the rain mixing in and make knocking it down we will see this much on the ground in when there is no potential for heavy amounts and outreach and that may be on the high sat or more probably like maybe a foot to foot half up there
5:08 am
couple of feet out over western parts of virginia northern virginia travel not advised obviously anywhere around the region with the snow coming in. in fact it's going to be so bad out there with the heavy snow it will shut down parts of virginia north carolina over the next couple of days so it is coming in folks you can see temperatures right now in the lower thirties going to warm things up with the transition to rain later today i had the full extent of forecasted so much more detail breaking it down region by region all right here on the traffic network maps and all the cameras as well not much to report across the area just yet except for naval station norfolk tropical talk about that in just a moment but a quick look now at the monitor merrimack six sixty four northbound traffic in southbound moving very well with no major delays there to report but again back on our second camera you want to head over now to that base traffic this is five sixty four west just past the sixty four interchange and you can see here it's already kind of turning into some of the parking lot as it
5:09 am
and head out to the base on knocking those delays on sixty four had to buy sixty four just yet but it's just twelve minutes after five walking to watch techno keep you posted another check on track here at the base in just a minute. also check traffic at the midtown tunnel all right ashleigh was in a minute take you along with the storm we're following breaking news this morning major international rating in the local thais university of virginia student is under arrest in north korea one
5:10 am
later today many local stores say that they will be restocked with snow supplies in case you didn't get your store shopping done. she knew her was on the peninsula yesterday as stores literally got cleaned out the red cross has a list of things that they say you need to have in case an emergency that includes things like flashlights batteries along with extra non perishable food and water having a snow shovel and some ice melts is also a really good idea if you want us to some people have a little bit of fun with all the panic posting pictures of empty shells with the hashtag bread and milk that's a little r said about all this apparently bananas
5:11 am
blizzard prepared this food that we have are in a seventy five sixty nine she says the weatherman said the word snow and then steve rosenthal has read all the shells they're kind of patchy with brent people grab the good stuff there. we also have this one from sarah. yes this is what it says for everyone wondering if the cliches about snow in the south are true. well apparently they are and you could see the shelves are bare and ready to be wonder bread is that what they have all right we'll have more information our storm coverage right now moving up and down the east coast it's moving in with a spike in the fix was not consider the south but we've not really cuz we are use to it and away the little things like the well and again you take a look you consider what's gonna happen up in northern virginia exactly this could be a historic snowfall for parts of virginia and working out to the mountains to feed some areas very very heavy stuff
5:12 am
this seriously this is not a surprise storm we've been talking about it. what becomes old trick is trying to pin everything down here and i will say the good news france the rose is in many ways this is going to be a lesser system for our area but it's a challenge to forecast in some other ways we're going to deal with rougher conditions and elsewhere all this out for you. so really depends you know kind of on how you want to look at this we're not going to get this know that they're going to see northern virginia and western virginia it's going to be a crippling storm for central western and northern parts of the commonwealth as well as many parts of north carolina they're already being impacted heavily as well for us though we're looking at winds could gust forty five to fifty mph to fifty miles for that tropical storm force winds and that's going to pick up later tonight riding the tides up so it's going to be when you're here and we're going to have those title issues as well heavy rain is water could be some flooding
5:13 am
the runoff combined with those tides kind of complicating things. so a very nasty stretch of weather coming up of the next couple days and we have a couple periods of snow here as well one of the beginning of them transition to rain we've been talking about some snow on the backside of the system as well take a look at some of the hot conditions and i think you'll generally find across regional focus on hand to read that this outlook here temperatures low thirties this morning i expect snow showers to develop late morning and into the early afternoon though continue with the snow will mix and then it transitions to rain as well as a temptress continue to climb upper thirties by late afternoon into the evening temperatures going to stay pretty close to forty so we will see that transition look at how widespread this snow is my sis trata se luce to travel to tennessee is a don't do what they were going to go and check out one of the university for my nephew they're putting that off i'm going to tell anybody that
5:14 am
the region not to do it on twitter his head up high and lady coming down from dc wanting to go to williamsburg was not going to be good yeah you might be able to sneak down if you leave now before the snow arrives but once the snow gets here you're going to be stopped because between williamsburg and richmond say up towards d c that snow up the matter is going to be so heavy the interstates are going to be a mass so even if you can get around a little bit early this morning just know that these very significant impacts going to come and shut things down for other parts of virginia lot of different things to consider with travel and it is not advised across the region as you can see the snow will overtake the region late morning into the early afternoon. mix and snow we may see some accumulations initially with this but there's gotta be a transition to rain the rain washes away which is he on the ground so sad to be just gorgeous white you see that's what is so pretty. well maybe for just a little bit if it really comes down certainly better chances that the west but as the rain
5:15 am
kind of slushy and wash away some of that heavy rain overnight the winds as well the tides building minor tidal flooding we have a coastal flood watch is a mention along with a high wind watch what i also wanna share with the report on the backside the cold air coming in and it's possible we can get some minor accumulations later saturday or saturday evening the snow showers to wind down though early sunday morning i think by sunrise sunday we see drier conditions clearing during the day on sunday obviously lots to talk about there. here's a quick look at the snow totals and again you see how things were transitioning mix to reign them back the snow and it goes back and forth where it stays snowing for longer periods of time obviously out to the west and back towards richmond that receive the much heavier snow potential. that's a look keep in mind again the rain will knock down some of those times i take a look here seven day forecast temperatures do to improve early next week is going to be a nice monday and tuesday till then. pretty yucky let's check in now with
5:16 am
the ride around town craig is not too bad just yet actually as i step out of the ways you can see things here most of hampton roads still in very nice shape now we do see a spot of red there and we'll talk about that in just a moment for now let's head to the midtown tunnel and you live look now trap is shaping up there again. not bad at all fifty eastbound into norfolk and westbound in the portsmouth both moving well with no major issues but again back on the traffic network maps as we zoom into that spot of red navel base traffic is definitely very heavy this morning was actually speaking with someone on twitter was saying we do have a couple of the carriers and port and that's why we've been seeing the very heavy traffic over at the base starting very early so right now you are back up to sixty four. we dropped down from fifty five miles an hour on sixty four up to fourteen holes in our there as you up cross at interchange so we're continuing to fall this as i zoom out again the rest of the area doing well again that life with the traffic around the downtown tunnel coming up next. i actually
5:17 am
5:18 am
. i in the snow brings closings delays and so many questions so if there is a state of emergency in the roads are bad can my employer still require me to come to work the answer yes. state officials do not have the authority to close private businesses on north carolina virginia our employment at will states that means that your employer can require you to be at work regardless of what it looks like outside. he might be thinking but i have responsibilities are children the bottom line is as harsh as it may sound it's not your employer's problem whether work or yet another trip to the grocery store how do you get your car that is stuck in the ice and snow out and on the road just remember the acronym casts the c stands for clearer path to give your tiresome room to roll a is for an attraction spread the salt sand or kitty liter later in the direction
5:19 am
tires deflate her tires a little bit for better traction and finally s which stands for. straighten your wheels before you start to roll and a quick reminder for you today is the day that we are picking a winner for our new york contest a break is giving one lucky viewer a chance to win a trip for two to new york city set includes a two night stay airfare tickets to see good morning america in times square. you still have one last chance to watch for the keyword in the six o'clock our annual interest on thirteen years now to come we continue their teen years now by daybreak in store mode this morning as a snowstorm threatens the entire east coast records at the details on the path they will take in hampton roads in this forecast coming up and we continue to follow breaking news this morning
5:20 am
5:21 am
good friday morning to you i'm the saddest moment in time on tree scenery just a moment we're going to have an update on breaking news out of north korea university of virginia student has been arrested in that country details in a moment but first the forecast. let's get right over to meteorologist greg muller and craggy you could call this the calm before the storm right. right now this is the last of the calm before the storm yesterday we're talking about insane yes tuesday that a cure those preparations before the wintry weather comes and this morning we knew we were going to start off with quiet conditions and now we're waiting for that whether the wintry weather to move in and it is right on schedule late morning and through the early afternoon we're going to see wintry precipitation across hampton roads and still quiet at the airport thirty one and partly cloudy moon was beautiful driving and i thought okay what the scene for a couple of days as we have the clouds rolling in and then the wintry weather later today rain tonight and when the wind right now north northeast at sixteen and those winds will be
5:22 am
warnings now out from franklin and southampton easy surgery and i will now light sussex isle of wight this eerie shade of blue here along with something in the peninsula newport news hampton up close and your under winter weather advisory for those years winter weather advisories the winter storm warnings off to the west that also middle peninsula northern neck under the winter storm warning heavy snow out this way we're going to see some travel issues later today and i think this future cast this tells the story is the best way to pick this and have been showing this several times very important she is going to find increasing amounts of precipitation coming in from the southwest as we had the late morning i stop here eleven you see the snow pushing in from the southwest temperatures lower to mid thirty so we start off with the snow around noon the snow in next and then as temperatures start to warm up down across north carolina coastal sections of virginia that makes transitions to rain later this afternoon and into
5:23 am
times wins increasing as well we'll see colder air wrapping in the back side with more potential snow late tomorrow and she more on that in just a bit for now know that we're going to deal with wintry weather in the roads could get very messy later today especially to the west ashley and craig i'm actually going to be here off through the noon show we're going to have course i cut and letting you know what's going on with the weather conditions i'll be here for that and of course thirteen is now at four five and six as well just to make sure you're traveling safely this afternoon as things start to really roll in in terms of the weather right now traffic does look really good across hampton roads except for a couple of spots here and he's going to call the chesapeake sixty four east and west moving pretty well and you live to just be just a few minutes but our heads were thirteen years now traffic camera and she in traffic at the berkeley bridge between norfolk and portsmouth are headed to downtown tunnel you can see two sixty four westbound moving well headed to the two eastbound traffic maybe just coming from portsmouth to city hall in
5:24 am
so no issues there to report but of course we had very heavy traffic around naval station norfolk to be that live look at again a live look at traffic in chesapeake coming up next. all right ashleigh thank you and we're getting back to store most coverage in just a moment but first we have breaking news reports north korea says it has arrested a university of virginia students for quote anti state attacks korean central news agency the state run media reports that authorities are investigating otto frederick one ba report says that the student who is in north korea on a tourist visa allegedly plotted to undermine north korea system and has links to the us government in order to keep following the story and update you as we learn more about this are now back to restore coverage now there are least thirty two school closures delays are schools that are dismissing early that information scrolling at the bottom of your screens we told you a short time ago hampton city schools closed today because of
5:25 am
getting later today you can visit thirteen years now that we're constantly updating the information not a storm coverage of the roads no big issues right now but that might not be the case later today is right across the region the dot crews are out in full force officially preparing for the potential winter weather. charlie brown joins us live she's tracking conditions on the peninsula elise good morning andrea moves down in williamsburg off richmond road it's very cold out here in quiet as well that might change a little later in the city says and they are ready to tackle the roads get quite messy out here at the possibility to get a steady spokeswoman tells me they have about four hundred times of the santas all nature she said they don't pre treat the roads the way does start to snow that's an old employ all their crews go out hit the roads and take their plows with them now. over the past couple of days people across hampton roads have been preparing for the storm although it's not

the snow that is falling around charlotte let's take a look right now at the map and i want to shoot the satellite radar images for the charlotte area and you can see the snow down there so our news crews in our company all around the region out really in play a lot of resources to cover this is going to be a major major snowstorm for the east coast and right on up to some of the major metropolitan areas in the northeast for our area it's kind of interesting we're gonna get some snow here we're goin to have some travel issues but we're also looking right here in hampton roads the media area near the coast and a lot of rain and i know that's probably a disappointment this song while we don't see as much snow is you're going to have out to the north and west for they could get a foot half to two feet or more in some locations around here amounts to be much lighter but we're going to see a lot of wind and some other issues with the tides take a look this is the european model with the snowfall projections and this is through sunday you
5:31 am
couple inches here i think anywhere from a trace of say three inches. keep in mind that the rain is going to knock down some of the snow that we see agassi will rely heavy rain to wash away. here is where they don't get as much rain that's where they're looking at much higher total so even richmond could see twelve to fourteen or maybe locally higher amounts up that way and much higher amounts north and west of the can over around sixteen inches or so it's certainly a possibility at that way. what is she the seven day forecast will get to spend a lot more time to get some other graphics to be sharing with you throughout the morning. more information coming in all the time. temperatures will warm to the upper thirties with that transition to rain later today. low to mid forties tomorrow morning and then falling off late the day that's why i think you'll see that makes back to snow tomorrow evening. let's check in now with ashleigh still pretty quiet on the roads with the weather and most of the area really has not picked up in terms of volume this morning pray in fear sixty four westbound at
5:32 am
chesapeake. definitely one of those areas where traffic is still very light headed in the river here in fine shape making woodward battlefield also come the same story word about in chesapeake. we had our second camera here let's head to norfolk and check traffic on five sixty four so we still have a pretty decent back up there making its way naval station norfolk. this shot here is just past the sixty four interchange we're going to be stop and go all the way to the base of not seeing major backups on sixty four headed to five sixty four just yet but keep an eye on things coming up next we'll head over to bay avenue and will check traffic leaving sixty four had to date four at the base tonight ashleigh thank you lee been telling you heavy snow strong winds all expected to slam the east coast said in some places that spring travel to a near standstill we have

cw_6wswswswsosksososososososososososososososos although already him of old winter is just now arriving for much of the east coast especially us and what an entrance making with the sword of a monster preparations are underway in the mid atlantic region were up to two feet of snow may fall by tomorrow especially around the nation's capital the mayor of dc has declared a state of emergency the carolinas are bracing for sleet and rain with
5:35 am
the roads dangerous for drivers. we have recovered in our neck of the woods good morning america has coverage in other parts of the country is well we'll have live reports from d c north carolina and new jersey starting on gma at seven o'clock this morning the owner of a driving school in greensboro north carolina is offering tips to drivers who will have to maneuver through snow and ice. he says that the best case scenario when you're following a vehicle in those conditions is to say far back and avoid sudden stops. if you do have to stop apply what he describes as the rational breaking that means putting your heel on the floor the ball of the above the foot on the brake and apply slow and steady pressure pushed down just like or stopping at a stop sign. he recommends leaving eight to twelve seconds distance in case the confidence starts to slide even the best writers to hit a patch of ice but by forty six right now we turn to the air travel and new this morning airlines have
5:36 am
nine hundred flights in and out or within the us through the weekend thousands of more cancellations are expected the flight tracking website flight aware predicts at least two hundred thousand travelers will be impacted by cancellations over the next three days. some airlines are shutting down operations entirely in airports throughout the storm zone where was the cancellation for thirteen years now the comic click on the traffic tap and a rail travel will also be impacted amtrak says it will operate on a modified schedule with fewer trains traveling to the northeast passengers holding reservations are encouraged to keep an eye on conditions make any necessary changes in advance of their scheduled departure of snow and look around today here on daybreak because craig has been very busy this morning tracking the storm. yeah we've been taking a look at this and you know it's kinda neat. we are station is part of that egg no broadcast company and we've been so proud of our affiliation used to begin at integra became just the broadcast side we have stations all around the country but many great
5:37 am
coast and they're all working to cover the storm right now we have a live picture i believe we can take you to greensboro north carolina with a reporter from wf and why they've been out there covering the snow there and many many news crews again for the inland area is bracing to cover incredible amounts of snow could become historic snowfalls for western parts of virginia up through dc incidentally our company takes is headquartered in washington d c so we've got virginia cover no doubt about that in north carolina as well. here's a word and expect. locally i write this morning the system is approaching you just saw greensboro north carolina we've been showing you pictures from our sister station d c and c in charlotte as well. the snows already there has reached our area yet but we are seeing increasing clouds coming in this morning it was partly cloudy mainly clear clouds are rolling in. mix precipitation and snow will move in from the south west later this morning and into
5:38 am
the precipitation intensifies so that mix precipitation or snow will increase the intensity increases and we're gonna start to see some rain mixing in it's more likely to see rain mixing in at the coast and for eastern north carolina right around the outer banks were looking for rain to really kick in during the afternoon that snow in the mix is going to linger for the inland areas and i'm really concerned about the roads even by early afternoon for areas that are little farther inland. ashley smith said she's going to be here through the new congress we don't typically at traffic coverage during our new show but throughout this event we're here to cover the impacts and were playing the ball where it lies so to speak i think the road you can be very messy early afternoon and that's why ashley is agreed to come in she's going to keep us in form four denied the warmer air does mix in going to see the wintry weather the snow the mix maybe some sleet that some kind of transition to rain except far northwest to
5:39 am
maybe the northern neck middle peninsula those areas the snow may continue or at least some sleep in the mix so that's why travel even worse in that area we're in a sea winds increasing from the northeast twenty to thirty five mph higher gusts late afternoon early evening two nights of those cuts could reach fifty mph and then create a situation where we have minor tidal flooding obviously very windy with heavy rain across the metro saturday's rain early mixing late for the metro and an ex again to snow a little farther north and west we had the potential for additional minor tidal flooding and then sunday night and are acutely saturday night into early sunday morning. that's going to see snow likely. again that transition back to snow showers still windy and the tide still running high so much to talk about the system take a look at schools four year high levels are supposed to reach those tonight and early tomorrow morning where we have minor tidal flooding. it'll build a
5:40 am
as well so that something were to be watching wheel of a coastal flood watch in high wind watch taylor the next twelve hours again the snow showers moving in late morning through noon intensify early to mid afternoon and then mixing with rain late. here's the seven outlook and i know that was a non traditional law whether caster showing all the time when information there is so much to talk about art we are gonna see some more sunshine later sunday monday and tuesday look great another chance for a few showers is again wednesday and thursday coming up in just a little bit of shade the future cast again the map three see the snow moving in rolling out stay tuned for that right now let's check in with naval station norfolk a national effort really naval station norfolk the only area where i'm seeing the liaison traffic network maps and as i check our cameras as well so the rest of the area looks fine but as we head to our camera. we've been talking alot about traffic on five sixty for one to head over now to sixty four making its way toward bay avenue. you
5:41 am
on the right shoulder they're really going slow as it approaches the ramp and head to bay and then notice here in the corner one store on bay avenue is going to be another jm so for those of you the head that way you probably are used to that heavy traffic but again as one to let you know that's happening again this morning the good news here. i'm not seeing those major delays on the shoulder on sixty four west completing back to grammy like we normally seen they really start roughly around here or maybe a quarter mile back in its logo as you could transition to the ramp so a bit of good news there what kind of see the silver lining in the cloud i'll keep watching this. keep watching traffic on five sixty four and will check traffic a few other spots when i come back ty nash think you are new this morning portsmouth police are investigating an attempted robbery that happened at the shell gas station on epping him street just before police tell us that a man entered the store armed with a knife and demanded money from the clerk the clerk refused and the suspect took off with nothing no one got
