making news in america this morning, countdown to the caucuses. less than a week until the first major electoral event in the presidential race. the democratic candidates on stage overnight making their final pitch to the people of iowa. digging out, the blizzard of 2016 leaving behind a mess. schools and major cities still closed and tracking another possible storm. plus, the serious situation caused by weather on the west coast. crumbling cliffs. caught on camera, a terrifying moment for a deputy thrown right under a semi truck. top dog. the hound who just had to run joining a half marathon and placing in the top ten. and we do say good tuesday morning, everybody.

by this time next tuesday the results of the first presidential contest will be in. >> at least we hope so, right. >> yes. >> next monday february 1st we've got six days to go, iowa voters will gather at their caucuses. >> last night the candidates appealed to iowa voters from the same town hall stage. >> a new national poll shows hillary clinton ahead of bernie sanders by double digits with martin o'malley trailing behind but clinton could actually lose the first contest there in iowa. abc's liz kreutz reports. >> reporter: i'm race heating up and hopefuling facing voters in a cnn town hall. >> just to be clear you are going to raise taxes to do this. >> yes, we will raise -- we will raise -- we will raise tax, yes, we will, but also let us be clear, chris, we may raise taxes, but we are also going to

insurance premiums for individuals and for business. >> reporter: he also didn't hold back when asked about his opponent. >> this calls for a standing up response. >> okay. >> what do i think? let me give you a couple of examples. i voted against the war in iraq. hillary clinton voted for the war in iraq. >> reporter: later hillary clinton animated, energetic confronted with questions over her honesty and her e-mails. >> i've heard from quite a few people my age that they think you're dishonest. >> you know, look, i've been around a long time. people virginia thrown all kinds of things at me and i can't keep up with it. i just keep going forward. they fall by the wayside. they come up with these outlandish things and make these charges, i just keep going forward because there's nothing to it. >> reporter: but then a lighter moment when clinton was asked to respond to her opponent's new tv ad featuring simon & garfunkel. >> i think that's great.

i loved it. >> she did add afterwards she loved the feeling behind the ad but believes that she is still the better choice. our thanks to liz in des moines. the next republican debate is thursday night and donald trump may be there. he's demanding moderator megyn kelly be removed but kelly's bosses at fox news are standing firm reminding trump even if he's elected you don't get to pick the journalist. he was often the attack taking aim at ted cruz. >> my new battle is with a gentleman named ted cruz. because you got to speak the truth. you got to speak the truth. the canadian, the man from canada. >> as ted cruz's numbers slip in the polls his campaign released a new attack ad attacking trump, of course, portraying him as more liberal than some might believe. we move on because schools are closed for another day in washington, baltimore, as well as philadelphia as well as some suburban communities. all of this as the mid-atlantic

the blizzard of 2016. >> and don't bother calling the irs headquarters for tax advice today either. all federal government offices in washington closed again. okay, air travel is still a mess after the storm with hundreds of flights canceled today already. more than 1600 flights were canceled yesterday and 2,000 others delayed. the problems in the east affect flights all across the country as planes and crews are stuck in the wrong places. >> this weekend's blizzard is being blamed for more than 40 deaths some heart attacks. all that made fighting a blaze in baltimore a nightmare. the fire trucks couldn't get close because of snow, 24 to 30 inches fell in the region and many residents aren't happy their streets haven't been cleared yet. well, warmer temperatures today could help the cleanup but as you can seen 0 the weather radar right there, another storm, it's moving in from the midwest, but does that mean more snow in the east?

>> slightly milder air coming in before another cold shot comes in concerned about black ice then and concerned about the potential for a late week storm. at the moment there is a chance of it getting closer to the east coast but we think the likely track is well offshore. if that happens then they'll be some light snow for eastern new england. >> winter has arrived. thank you, rob. on the west coast northern california has its own natural disaster that is brewing at this hour. the residents of this apartment complex in pacifica near san francisco have been ordered to evacuate as this cliff keeps falling into the ocean. the cause, weeks of heavy storms and high surf, it's not just the apartment building that's at risk. a nearby auto shop has lost most of its parking lot. >> in the last week probably seven, eight feet at least, in the last 40 years, 100 feet. you either laugh or cry. that's all you can do. >> well, it's happened before here, but a recent drone video

cliff falling off meaning this apartment building is in immeant danger. ex-a grand jury in houston was weighing charges against planned parenthood after video was circulated that seemed to show executives trading in fetal tissue. instead they indicted two of the activists on charges of tampering with government records and purchasing human organs. no other details of those were released. >> now to michigan where the governor there may soon be forced to reveal more details about his handling of the water crisis in flint. governor rick snyder's e-mails and other communications have been subpoenaed. this is all part of a class action lawsuit. it comes as a former prosecutor has been named to spearhead an investigation into the crisis. well, new details in that huge manhunt for escapees in southern california. officials in orange county say they believe the three men are still in the area because of their close ties to local

well, here's a close call in the waters off south florida. 13 people had to be rescued from a sinking yacht. the coast guard says the 106-foot boat took on water 13 miles off the coast of ft. lauderdale. all passengers were able to get on board the coast guard ship that arrived to help but appears a mechanical problem may have caused the yacht to sink. all day breakfast at mcdonald's is really sizzling. the burger giant had better than expected earnings last quarter, up more than 5.5%. mcdonald's began offering all day breakfast in october. part of their turnaround plan and seems to be working. >> everyone loves an egg and

a nurse is facing charges for faking cancer to scam donations. investigators in forsyth county say mary bennett used her medical training to convince potential donors she had stage 4 ovarian cancer. she received $25,000 in donations using that to fund trips around the southeast including a trip to new orleans to see a ventriloquist kirk mcconnell held a fund-raising dinner for a benefit. >> i couldn't believe it. i couldn't believe it. for days after i talked to them i still couldn't believe it but now i believe it. >> bennett has now been charged with theft and forgery. in austin, texas, take a look at this. a strange road rage incident caught on cam. the video shows a man wielding a baseball bat confronting the driver of a pickup truck who then grabbed a pole, the two of them go at it like ninja warriors in the middle of a street. the conflict steams to finally

another tattoo from a confident patriots fan sadly for these folks, of course, neither team is even in the big game. >> i guess you've got to be a die-hard fan to do this. >> you got to believe. >> and the seventh finisher at a half marathon in alabama actually didn't look like that. but never bothered to register bachelor the race. ludivine, take a look somehow escaped her backyard and made her way to the starting line and ran the entire 13.1-mile course. >> for good reason. the 2 1/2-year-old hound dog had no trouble keeping up with the pack even though her owner says that she's lazy. her time was a little over an hour and a half and marathon officials awarded her a medal on a ribbon just like the other finishers. she did way better than i could have hoped for. >> she's now qualified for the new york city marathon so that's great. more news, folk, after this. i'm billy, and i quit smoking with chantix. i had a lot of doubts going in. i was a smoker.

checking our top stories the democratic presidential candidates answered questions at a town hall meeting in des moines. iowa voters will have the first when they caucus. as well as those in baltimore and philadelphia, too many roads are still blocked by blizzard snow. a west coast natural disaster in the making. this amount building on the verge of falling into the pacific sea. the cliff is crumbling after all the recent storms near san francisco. looking at today's weather, milder weather along the east coast but rain from northern virginia down to the gulf coast and across to texas. light snow near the great lakes and rain in the pacific northwest. well, finally one young carolina panthers fan is cheering his link to history. he's now the proud owner of a touchdown football. >> yeah, apparently wasn't his first attempt at intercepting the ball and in this interview with scott wicker sham of our charlotte station, he talks
