build into the system yesterday. and i believe that' s why we really had to cut down on the snow totals. we were working with that and dry air and all the moisture you see impacting the east coast and with that we had the high pressure off to the west of us and quite a challenge in the tri- state being on the northern edge of it. depending on where you are, that means you may not really see any snow compared to the places in the south and east where we did receive quite a bit more. notice how temps are still very cold. - mid and we' ll have winds out of the we' ll talk about some warmer conditions and the potential for wet weather in just a few. right now let' s send things over to denise here on this drive. >> for the most part we had decent roadways especially for the interstates and seeing the slow down right in the area of

we were out at anderson and very little issue there is and just fine and now made our way to watavia because it' s saturday and people want to get to the best buy and the pet smart. the only issue is slushy and a little bit of icy spots in the parking lots. and in the last 40 minutes we' ve been here and over in the distance and he' s been going back and forth and getting the parking lot plowed out and looking good. as you make your way towards the main road here and that' s then it' s about an inch to the east gate area and we have the jungle gyms over there and aj trek and, folks, you' re just fine. get on out and do what you have to do here. there are no major issues here and a little slushy and a few icy patches, but all in all it' s not going to be bad to get

[ laughing ] it sounds pretty - - thank goodness for smart phones and i' ve probably read every news report on the planet. >> anchor: you mentioned the police officers or someone came by and said they' d bring food and water by? >> they did check on us twice. they came by about midnight and said what the gameplan was they wanted the trucks and suvs to move forward and the cars to move to the right side and stay put. they were going to try to bring a plow up. and that never actually took place. but then about 3 they came back by and just checking on everybody to make sure that they had gas and said they' d

>> reporter: we really were. it would have been exciting to see that snow but it would have caused major headaches out there. we did see the higher amounts but didn' t get the brunt of it. >> anchor: that' s a good thing! >> anchor: it really is. >> reporter: he was just about two hours south, 40 minutes south of lexington. in london, kentucky, 2 miles north of that. that' s not that far away. it did miss up. resresthat' s what i' m stressing and what made this forecast so challenging because it really wasn' t that much of a distance, but you had so much of the distance in the forecast. >> and i' ll show it to you guys in a moment. take you outside thirst and the jake sweeney kia cam there. we have the wet road surfaces those roads. temperatures are below the freezing mark by about 10 it' s a situation where especially on the bridges and overpasses, those less traveled roads, we'

watching now for slick conditions. denise will talk about that in a moment, but the snow is tapering off over the region so that' s fantastic news heading into the afternoon and we' ll see gradual clearing out of the area heading into the second part of the day. now chilly temperatures are also in the forecast. we' re going to run about 10 below our seasonal average this afternoon and in the 7- day forecast we' ll talk about the next chances for some wet weather. we do have that winter storm warning still in effect for the southeastern most counties on adam, lewis, mason and robertson until about noon. snow is really starting to taper off and may have to be tweaked throughout the day as snow totals come into the fox 19 weather center. trace amount upwards to an inch possible in the city center to cincinnati and 275 loop. we also have the lesser amounts spotted off to the north and west here. but the higher amounts to the

>> anchor: fox 19 weather time is 8:21 and as we look farther from home in the white house, that' s in the midst of the winter storm and see that covering on the roof top there and old glory off in the distance waving back and forth a bit. we will be talking about those conditions here close to home. not as severe obviously as what they are dealing with in washington d.c.. we' ll see the significant accumulation and the light look over florence with the light accumulations there and especially those less traveled roads and those sidewalks and they may be slippery this morning. it' s 22 and look live with

we did have quite a bit of a range and it' s higher amounts where aberdeen and west union coming in at 5 inches there and about 4 inches with hillsborough over 3 and about an inch and a half permillion and notice aberdeen, west union and those are extreme southwestern counties in the fox 19 viewing area. you folks did see the most and again we' re on the northern fringe of the system and that' s what made the system so hard to forecast for. it' s dry air on the back side of the system and we had all this moisture checking all the numerous watches moving to the west. then it is going for a couple of days that are posted to noon. we are watching the end of the system as we speak and the storm tracker doppler radar showing the end of the storm system moving through the area that that area of low pressure still spinning off to the west or east there rather. it is going to move off of the atlantic ocean and that means we' ll have some dry weather

north so a bit of a wind chill and certainly possible and it feels more like 11 on the skin here close to home so a killy day and temps are sitting in the 20s over the region and it will feel colder once you factor in that wind out there. that' s already starting to pick up in some places. below average it' chilly but we' we' ll be able to dig ourselves out in the southeastern most counties and now other than warming into next week. the 7 day in just a few. right now dan and jess, back to you. >> dan: sarah missed her flight or got cancelled to richmond and made her come to work. >> anchor: yes, a lot of folks are out in the snow. she' s in maysville. is it still snowing? >> reporter: yes, it is still snowing! it is still snowing. then it is going to the west of the valero station off the main drag and you can see they' ve

in mason county. the roads are not that bad and covered in some snow and we have a guy who just pulled up to refuel his car. if you want to show it here live this morning he is refueling and he does have a snow plow on the very front of his truck there. and he' s going to need it because several of the roads here at mason county and it took us about an hour and a half to get down here. we could not drive as fast as we normally would and then the snow is still coming down pretty hard here in mason county. we' re going to stay on top of this. we' ll bring you live here from mason county throughout the morning. back to you guys. >> anchor: and notice behind her how cheap the gas was! couldn' t help but notice what they' re filling up for! >> anchor: as catherine is showing us from d.c., the east coast is getting hit hard with the winter blast. >> anchor: it really is. it takes a view from space to grasp how full the winter storm is. details, though, on how deadly

kd >> good morning, everyone. approaching 8:30 this saturday morning. hit that area. a lot of snow there and looking can see - - we' ve been showing you morning re dealing with a lot of snow. thankfully we kind of escaped a i' m looking at catherine for confirmation. >> reporter: yes, of course. >> dan: she' s been track thanksgiving for a couple of days for us. >> it' s the moisture driven system and can change the forecast dramatically. that' s what we saw happen to us in the tri- state and some areas did receive a significant amount. a majority of us did have lesser amounts of snow accumulation and that does include our metro parks cam over butler county there in west chester. just a dusting so really nothing major as far as the snow storm for you but we
8:28 am
roads and cool temperatures and we' re sitting at 22 but if you compare the conditions to the extreme eastern most including adam, lewis, mason and robertson, quite a contrast. you' re currently under the winter storm warning that will take you until about lunch time and noon and see the snow eventually taper off over the region. we may have to tweet this through the day as they come into the fox 19 weather center and this is what we look at as far as snow totals with whip trace amount to an inch or a majority of us and off to the south and east here you can see those totals going up quite a bit in our viewing area and the significant amount near maysville, west union and georgetown but higher the farther east and south. for today the snow starting to taper off with the high pressure building and you can see as we pan over a little bit the snow showers certainly come to an end near hillsborough, brush creek. not too many of those.
8:29 am
s the last bit of it and then wee going to dry out. then it is going to the east with the high pressure building off to the west and that' s going to deliver the dry forecast for us today. then the temperatures sitting in the 20s right now and we' re going to head into the afternoon with those daytime . let' s check with the morning driver now. denise johnson standing by with car start. >> you may have to shovel out ve just jumping around even t interstate and they' ve done a good job of keeping those clear but right now there are still areas dealing with the snow coming down and we have sent jody bar out on the roads and into the snow to show you where it is coming down pretty good.
8:30 am
>> anchor: all right, i don' t think he can hear us. you can see the road conditions there from the storm tracker live shot and how snow covered they are. at last check he was at aberdeen there and i' m not sure where he is at this point and we' ll check back in in just a few moments. >> and it really does show you guys at home a live picture of those secondary roadways that are snow covered and really a lot of roads that have not been treated yet by the plows. it' s the main thor' s fare they focus on first and move to the outlying areas in the tri- state and try to get those taken care of. and then oh, man, on the back roads, pack your patience. >> anchor: that' s what we want to see. the east coast is hunkering down with the monster storm and to put it lightly it hits 22 states. >> anchor: miguel marquez says the capitol is on track to break some winter records. >> winter has finally arrived
8:31 am
>> reporter: and south carolina, north carolina, virginia, new york, maryland and virtually every other state on the eastern seaboard. millions are facing potentially record breaking winter conditions. the massive storm set to hit the east coast has already frozen air travel with more than 4,000 flights cancelled so far. united airlines is suspending all flights at dulles washington international and other airports starting friday afternoon. >> i think it could be disastrous for a lot of people trying to get out of town. >> reporter: with the massive croshairs on the midatlantic the capitol starting from the first winter weather test. >> if this was a test, we failed. as soon asy snow started to fall, it immediately froze. >> washington' s mayor apologized for the snarl in the first big freeze. >> we are very sorry for the inadequate response. >> reporter: but it was nothing compared to the icy juggernaut
8:32 am
30 inches of snow by sunday. >> we will treat this event as a homeland security and emergency management event. >> reporter: i' m reed binion reporting. >> anchor: well, today some areas of that storm could see up to 10 inches of snowfall every 6 hours and if you plan to take that flight out of cbg today, you have to check your flight status. numerous flights to and from the east coast are delayed or cancelled and that' s a live look there this morning. >> anchor: and other flights got cancelled, too. so she' s at work. and members of the butler county and the manager management agency will be arriving in baltimore. 15 members from butler county fire and police will be spending the week in maryland. emergency workers say they' ll be assisting with logistics surrounding the storm and that staff emergency operation center stand.
8:33 am
virginia college student and wyoming high school graduate is under arrest for acts in north korea. >> anchor: the announcement came yesterday. frederick warmbeer was detained on january 2nd in pyongyang. according to the north korea state media, he entered on a tourist visa and is accused of carrying out, quote, a hostile act against that country. it also says the student allegedly plotted to undermine the north system and has links to the u.s. government. now wyoming high school released a statement saying that man' s family. >> anchor: a long list of snow emergencies are still in effect we' ll have the full list in a few moments. >> anchor: and a live look we' across the tri- state. this, again, one of those roads, kind of in the outlying areas of the tri- state. we' ll get a better picture for
8:34 am
>> and then it is looking live over west chester with the metro parks and butler county cam there. you didn' t see as much as some of the southeastern counties. in west chester we had higher amounts and the farther east and did have lesser amounts to the north and west. now switch things over and take
8:35 am
amounts we did see in some of the counties including aberdeen and west union and about 5 inches on the ground and, of course, it will vary in surrounding areas but we did have about 4 inches in georgetown and hillsborough just over 3. amelia just about 1.5" there. so really quite a spread over the region depending on where you are and one of the reasons why this forecast was such a hard one to forecast for is because we were on the northern fringe of it. notice how we still have numerous warnings posted off to the south and east and we are going to be tracking for us close to home the winter storm warning up until about noon and then as far as the accumulating snow goes, it' s almost winding down. in fact we just have a couple of snow flakes to talk about and the storm tracker doppler radar is part of the masive area of low pressure and this area of low pressure not only was scooping up moisture from the gulf of mexico, but also taking in moisture from the atlantic ocean. that' s why we had a lot to work with.
8:36 am
could amount to very high amounts of snow accumulation, but on the back side of that system, we had a lot of dry air also and i think that really cut down the snow accumulations for the majority of us but still did get the brunt of it over washington d.c.. and the winds shift to the north and that' s the cold forecast for us with the wind chill values and it feels more like 11 and the thermometers are going to read for most places and cloudy skies for the majority of the area and we' ll have dry conditions and we' ll have temperatures near 10 below the seasonal average today and watching for the gradual clearing tomorrow and partly cloudy skies if you didn' t get the chance to shovel the driveway today, you' ll have another opportunity tomorrow. maybe a little snow melt also as temps climb above the freezing mark. back to you. >> anchor: sounds good. we want to send you back s really conditions. so fox 19 now, sarah selly joining us live from maysville. good morning to you!
8:37 am
s already snowing out there! hey, sarah! >> reporter: it is still snowing, yes. it hasn' t stopped snowing. it' s sticking and building on top of what' s already fallen here and this area did get hardest in the surrounding city of cincinnati. folks are waking up to covered streets and covered sidewalks and covered roads and definitely a winter wonderland in the way here in mason county. you do want to be careful. we drove on the highway to get here and it was okay but there were some spots that were slick but we' re okay. if you' re headed out and need to get on that road and any others in the mason county area, you definitely want to take things with you. an emergency kit and that kind of stuff and be aware and make sure people know you' re coming to a destination. you could be involved in accidents if you' re not careful. be aware some roads are not clear and they' ll have you working through and doing that this weekend as we dig out here in mason county. but meanwhile back to you guys.
8:38 am
>> anchor: stay warm! several counties are still under snow emergencies this morning. in ohio, adams and brown are both under a level 2 and that means you need only be on the road if it' s absolutely necessary. several places in kentucky are also under a level 2. lewis, pendleton and mason county where sarah is, and we' ll keep you posted if anything changes. a lot of games cancelled and postponed, but don' t worry. >> anchor: fox 19' s reporters found really plenty of high school basketball games to fill you in on this morning. that' s coming up next in sports. >> anchor: and a live look at seaside heights, new jersey, where they were really affected by the big snow storm. we' re going to talk more about

couple of light snow flakes for you and a few farther to the north ask east and that' s the last bit of that wet weather associated with this massive system and check out all the water we had to work with. that' s why our models were kind of getting out of hand at times. we have all this gulf moisture and have that dry air working in on the back side of the system. so i think that' s what really cut down the snow accumulations. but you really didn' t have to go down that far to get higher amounts and down on the northern fringe of the system and we' ll talk about the slight change in the trek and that' s certainly what we saw in the motion. we' re dry today and looking at partly to mostly cloudy skies in the afternoon and overnight partly cloudy conditions will be in the forecast. we' re clearing out so that allows temperatures to fall in the overnight. we' ll have the temperatures drop in the midteens and it will be cool tomorrow night and many of us will find a little bit above the freezing mark at 32 so we' ll get a little bit of snow melt.
9:37 am
sunshine to melt us out, we' ll see the accumulations go down just a bit. but heading into next week, the rain and snow chance then for tuesday and with those we' re going to see the temperatures eventually rebound and be in the mid40s by the time we make it to your friday and also tracking dry weather across the area. dan, over to you. wine, catherine. >> reporter: sign me up! >> dan: so do you guys at home. and what better way to stay warm at home with a blustery cold day than with a cup of soup. tony bricks is coming in with the easy recipe. chef, thank you for coming in. >> sure. >> dan: and you brought wine especially for the ladies? >> absolutely. >> dan: what are we making today? it' s simple enough. celery, apple and cheddar bisque. >> it' s a pretty simple soup. it' s a pureed soup and cream soup and keeping it a touch
9:38 am
>> dan: what are the ingredients? >> it' s celery root which is a great ingredient. the nice smooth creamy soup but celery flavor. and then the local apple. and we' re going to start off by sweating some onions and not trying to get a ton of color on the soup but coaxing out flavors and with the olive oil and this is easily found at kroger anymore these days. you can get it at jungle jims, obviously it' s a nice celery flavor. this is a little roasted apple and play well with the salary and this is vegetable stock we have here so we' ll go with some of this. >> dan: and what' s the temperature? >> i start off at the high temperature and then drop it down and simmer it. the celery root takes awhile to cook.

to kind of play with the savory notes we want to put sweet notes in hare so this is honey. a little bit of ohio honey. apple cider because we' re using apples and apple juice. and a little bit of vinegar and this is yogurt. and it really works well with the dish. this is the greek yogurt and i like the flavor more. >> dan: and mix it in on the high heat. >> we' ll have it mix together and cook about 30- 40 minutes to make sure everything gets nice and soft. >> dan: and it renders down, right? >> you don' t want to cook it too much because you don' t want too thick of a soup and want the nice consistency like this here and i would start off you can have that vegetable stock on the side and use chicken
9:40 am
>> we turn down like this. >> blend this really nice and smooth and this is the finished product here. so - - >> oh, my gosh! it smells and looks amazing. and 20. >> we are a wine bar. so we specialize, obviously, in wine. but we also are kind of a deal with a lot of local farms and utilize ohio ingredients. >> love that. >> as much as we can this year we' re in the doldrums right now but we' ve been able to use a couple of things. this is an apple butter we actually make, but you can buy store- bought apple butter. this is the savory cheddar gran ola that gives a nice crunch and then a little bit - - just the apple and the text on this. >> dan: and you serve? >> the chardonnay with this. you' ll get apple notes off this and the text book creaminess
9:41 am
>> dan: can we? let' s get catherine a glass because she needs it. >> reporter: she' s been working hard on all the weather hitting the area. definitely want to try this. >> oh, my goodness! thanks, you guys! looking out for me. >> it' s sweet and salty. >> i don' t have a huge sweet tooth but it needs to counter balance the savoriness of the soup. >> dan: and you' re willing to share the recipe with everyone else? >> absolutely. >> dan: that recipe is on our website fox19com we' quick break!
9:42 am
>> anchor: 9:57 now and we have to talk about the weather one more time here. >> it' s been a headache. we' ve been getting a lot of flak but it' s one of the situations. we know it' s the nature of the beast. we had a change in the track that dramatically changed the snow amounts and that could potentially happen. we have so much going on in our
