7:43 am
health and lower their risk for heart disease. only about 17% of americans now smoke. many americans have improved their eating habits by cutting back on processed foods and sugars. and more are exercising regularly. but overall, we have an epidemic of obesity in the united states and that commonly leads to issues with high cholesterol, blood pressure and diabetes. all three are huge contributors to heart disease. ok, if someone is committed to eating healthier and losing weight, what are some recommendations you can offer? first, i think it's smart to see your doctor or a medical professional to determine what's the best choice for you. there are a lot of "fad" diets out there, and some are not healthy or may not be appropriate for you. at minuteclinic we offer a personalized program based on the clinically proven dash for health" eating program, ranked #1 overall diet by u.s. news & world report for four years in a row.

one on one, do an assessment and evaluation, help you set realistic goals and provide coaching through follow up visits. the program includes an online membership to dash, where you can help track your results, receive customized meal plans and recipes and get regular tips on nutrition, cooking, shopping for food. why is the dash program effective? it's a program that really focuses on making sure you are eating the correct number of servings and the right portion size based on your age, weight and body size. dash stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension. it was originally created to be a diet that can reduce your bp by a couple points in just a couple weeks. but it's been found to be very effective in also lowering cholesterol and losing weight. what does the dash eating plan focus on providing? with dash you develop a meal plan that encourages a healthy balance of whole food groups: fat free or low fat milk and dairy whole grains fresh fruits and vegetables lean fish, meat and poultry nuts, seeds and legumes, including dried beans and peas what's the cost behind this program? well i have some good news to share here. i know there are a lot of mixed opinions about the affordable care act, but under the plan, nutrition and obesity screenings are covered by insurance and if you're determined to be obese based on body mass index, you can qualify for additional counseling services. it's always best to check with your insurance provider first to understand what's covered. and remember, if you enroll in the minuteclinic's program, that dash diet online subscription is included - that's a $69 value. just ahead ... we're looking at
