10:00 am
disney-abc domestic television] this morning on "today's take" we'll start ringing in the new year with wrestling superstar john cena joins us as plus, the popular christmas gift that got people flipping out. hoverboard fails. and christmas cleanup. how to remove your tree without making a mess. coming up now. >> from nbc news, this is today's take with al roker, natalie morales and tamron hall lye from rockefeller plaza. >> all right. welcome to "today" on monday morning. yeah. december 28th, 2015. hope you had a great christmas. i'm al along with natalie, our good buddy john cena is back. >> i have no dance moss. >> missy elliott featuring pharrell.
10:01 am
there you go. >> like it. even the puppets dance better than i do in that video. >> you're becoming a regular for us. we love that. >> always good to hang out with you guys, talk about news and stuff. appreciate you having me back. >> we are all back from christmas break. you and your family. >> went skiing. we had incredible weather. we went to vale. i think there was 26 inches in like a three-day period. unbelievable snow. we had a great time. all the kiddos getting to be really good skiers. we were talking about some of the best gifts i think the kids could get this year. not the hoverboard which we will get to in a minute. this was one of my son's gifts from some family friends. remember this game? you click the dial, you never know when the whipped cream is going to hit you in the face? whipped cream.
10:02 am
we had so much fun with this game. such a fun concept. >> that's great. you can watch that forever. >> he was just laughing nonstop and of course eating all the whipped cream. that was a great gift. you had one. >> yeah. we got this, it's called on-key overdrive. it sets up like a slot car. it's a regular track but it actually scans the track and then the cars take off and you're racing them using your phone, the phone connects with the track. >> you can change the track? >> you can change the track. it's really great. willie also sent me, speaking of hammered, a cocktail courier for moscow mule. a friend sent the mugs. i don't remember much of christmas, actually. >> that's a big mug.
10:03 am
you probably don't. >> that's a good mug. that's all right. dylan was on a hoverboard. >> i was. it was not mine. my niece got a hoverboard. >> you were on it, then you were off of it. >> i was on it the first time and i rocked the hoverboard. i mean, look, hands on the hips. >> you're good. around the staircase, the whole thing. >> you went up the stairs. >> up the stairs, down the stairs. but then the next day, which we don't have on video i was so cocky with my skills i started spinning in circles and i went to get off it and i did what you see everybody else doing. i just landed flat on my butt, wrists like this, this wrist isn't really functioning all that well. >> good thing -- >> there's a trick to not falling. >> i think the trick is staying on it forever and never getting off of it. it's the getting off. >> when i tried it, when it was just coming out, i literally, my arm got twisted to the back bus i because i had the two guys
10:04 am
helping me. nchlgs the >> the trick is to have two guys helping you. >> you need handsome guys helping you. >> when you find a handsome guy, maybe you will get help. come on. i had to do that. >> it's not easy. >> what a handsome man. dylan, your family tradition, singing "12 days of christmas"? >> yes. that's my sister-in-law. we all get a part of the song. >> that's a cute tradition. >> we all sing it and after that the family's like we're done and they leave. >> john, do you have christmas traditions? >> i'm kind of adopting them from my better half. she has a big extensive family like that. they do a giant dinner celebration to the theme of the drummer boy every year. >> i love that song. >> where's the video? >> it's a very important
10:05 am
secretive celebration. now it's public. >> a lot of people -- >> in the future i'll bring the video. this is actually what i did on christmas. i had time to spend with my own family and of course the person i love the most. we had a beautiful day in massachusetts and the weather was exceptional. it's about to get a little rough. it was exceptional for christmas. we just enjoyed the crazy 65 degree -- >> >> that's where she's from? >> that's where i'm from. >> how big is the pool? >> it's a pretty deep, big, tragic, horrible christmas banter filled pool. but she did great. i think we had a great christmas. the whole family was together. it was really, for the weather to be nice and everybody to be out and enjoy was really cool. >> it was unbelievable. people were barbecuing on christmas day. >> strange to be in massachusetts in shorts and a teeshirt. >> given that a year ago it was waist-deep in snow. >> it's coming. >> it's coming.
10:06 am
>> we were talking about how many people actually got hurt. they were one of the hottest gifts of christmas this year, as you saw. you have probably seen a lot of these videos on the internet. >> oh, man! >> is that how you looked? >> why did the camera not keep rolling is what we wanted? >> ow! >> it's like america's funniest. >> it looks like -- >> when skateboards first came out, this was the same type of -- >> the difference is the skateboard wasn't self-propelled. gravity kind of helped you with that. this is -- >> like you said, it's a segway but without the handles. not being able to hold on to something, you're completely off center. >> my niece is very good at it. she always wears the helmet.
10:07 am
don't seem to hit. how about that florida congressman? >> the florida congressman tweeted this, captioning it confirmed, hash tag hoverboard is for kids. i wound up in southern baptist, south florida. a lot of people spending time at the emergency room that they were not planning during the holiday. >> so fun. >> if they don't explode you end up beneath them. >> john, can we embarrass you a little more? we love to say how great you are. apparently buzzfeed thinks you are top notch. top 13 list of the year's biggest breakout stars in film, tv and movies. >> that just proves they got the check. thank you, guys at buzzfeed. i appreciate it. >> we can keep going. aren't those your safe words? >> oh, my goodness. yes.
10:08 am
>> like how i worked that one in? >> we had train wreck, sisters, the cast was on late night with seth meyers last week. >> i'm the designated mom tonight. >> john cena very funny in the film. he's a super-funny guy. >> can i say something about him? when i saw him i had feelings that i have never felt before. that's not my usual type. i like a skinny weird-looking nerd. mplgts >> you wanted to be held in his two hands like a tiny tea cup dog. >> i would never confuse you for a tiny tea cup. >> she wanted to be held like -- >> i understand. >> i don't even know what to say. >> what is the reaction when you are sitting home on the couch and they start talking about you in that way? >> i would say these two hands are only for touching someone's body and that's this guy right
10:09 am
i totally kid. >> excuse me? >> i will admit, it's hard to see you now in the suit after seeing "train wreck." >> i have a feeling the folks who saw "train wreck" make it difficult to see me, period. we had a good time making the movie. it was a funny movie. everybody laughed. but everybody seems to have that comment. this isn't you. all right. okay. >> or it is, and -- >> or it is. >> literally seeing a different side of you. >> just making everybody laugh. just doing my best. put a smile on everybody's face. >> you sell it like no one else. i got to tell you. >> that's right. i understand bed, bath and beyond has a new brand of john cena towel racks. >> it's a small rack. small. oh, boy. >> if you haven't seen "train wreck," you will get the joke. >> talk about the weather or something. >> what a segue!
10:10 am
you are a handsome man. so handsome. >> oh, man. >> let's show you what we have going on. look what else we got going on. today. are we charging now? what's going on? we have a tornado watch, we have right now, tornado warnings throughout parts of central alabama and southern alabama and the panhandle of florida. we are watching this line, very strong line of storms. that's going to be tracking to the east. so we have got eight million people at risk for severe weather, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes possible as this front pushes east, we are looking today, tomorrow, flooding rains, storms possible in the south, going to be very severe. on the back side of this system, we have got a lot of wet snowy weather to talk about. look right now, we could see flooding, three to five inches of rain from central alabama into northern georgia. 33 million people in the path of wintry weather.

get it to the curb without a lot of pine needles. what i do first, pluck off the ornaments. as you do that, tons of pine needles drop. i put bath towels at the bottom to catch all the pine needles. when you are done doing that, john, if i can borrow you, take the tree, put it on its side. first you take the water out. of course, we have a fake tree here so that doesn't count. >> you are not putting the stand with the tree, obviously. >> that's right. leave the stand. we will take this and just as if we are folding sheets together. >> the drop cloth allows you to protect your floor. >> exactly. with a friend or a few friends, drag it to the curb. make sure to go trunk first so you don't meet with resistance in the doorway. let's talk ornaments. >> tree's taken care of. what about the ornaments? >> a lot of people know you can put your ornaments in egg cartons to protect them but there is random stuff, hooks,

10:18 am
>> not only that, you don't know which lights go where. actually, i will let one of you do this. wrap it right around. use a plain hanger. i like this because it has ridges on it. also, the cardboard is a great idea. this is just a flap from the top of a cardboard box. any piece of cardboard will do. i put a little tab on here to remind myself for next year where it goes. >> if i can do this, anyone can do this. >> so handy. >> this is good. >> what about wrapping paper? you want to keep it fresh for next year. >> it gets mushed so easily. this is a plain wine box i found. it has a cardboard grid inside. >> i got a few of those lying around the house. >> candles get banged up so easily. they are so fragile. we will each do this. everybody take a candle. super easy. >> just the paper towel holders? >> all i need is paper towel and paper towel cardboard insert.
10:19 am
roll up the paper towel. >> blow out the candle. >> stick it into the cardboard. that's it. lay it in a box. happens to be the perfect side for a tapered candle. lay it in a box, a drawer. really easy. >> good ideas. what about wreaths? >> what have we got here? >> really good idea for wreaths and garlands is to go vertical because it can get destroyed so easily. i hung this wreath on a standard garden hose hanger. look at this. this is a standard garden hose hanger from my local hardware store. if you don't mind helping me wrap this. go ahead, wrap the garland around. this guy's pretty skinny but it works for really thick garland as well. at the very end, you can throw a plastic bag over it if you would like to protect it from dust. stuff you have around the house, you can use. >> i determined what we all need is john cena to help us. >> cue the christmas fiasco. these will help even me. thank you so much.

10:41 am
tell me what this is and what's being developed. >> what's great about this is normally the flu vaccine is developed before flu season hits and by the time it hits, the strain of the vaccine that you're protected against has mutated. with the universal flu vaccine, what you would be able to do is get inoculated against the part of the flu that doesn't mutate. >> it seems like a great idea but it's obviously been hard to produce. right? >> it is. it's also a couple years away from really being implemented into practice. primarily because even though that one part of the virus that doesn't change, when it's on its own is actually a pretty flimsy unstable molecule, let's say. they are still trying to figure out how we can really capitalize on that fact that the virus can stay the same from year to year. ideally the universal flu vaccine would need to be given once in a lifetime, certainly not yearly. >> for now, continue to get the flu vaccine. it's still out and available. next, this seems like something

that could really help, using your own immune cells to fight or kill cancer. how are scientists actually doing this? >> okay. this is another example of something that we call immunotherapy that we talked about a couple weeks ago. this is a little different. this is also, though, sort of taking what we know about a person's immune system and really exploiting what we can about our body's own ability to kill cancer cells. again, this is taking something called a t-cell, we are taking it out of a person, putting it back in, genetically modified. the t-cell will find cancer cells and destroy it. currently this is used for treating lymphoma, although solid tumors are obviously also on the horizon. very optimistic studies. >> it's great. it's turning your own body into a cancer-killing machine. you are basically taking your immune cells, t-cells, and they are calling this designer t-cells, right, and manufacturing them so that they

can actually fight the cancer on their own. >> let's talk heart health as we move over to the next panel here. here we are treating, again, through the personalized approach, using people's own dna to help their hearts. how does this work? >> this one has been studied through tissue and blood samples to -- this is really advances in genomics. they can tell what kind of medicines you are going to respond to, what kind of medicines you won't respond to. so you are not wasting your time waiting for treatments you won't respond to or taking treatments that won't be effective for you. >> so it's getting the right medication for your heart. >> exactly. the idea here is trying to predict which patients will respond to which medicines rather than the one size fits all approach which we use for a lot of different fields, of course. this actually came out of some research which showed that a drug they had hoped would help people with cardiovascular disease didn't have a great

i sure had a lot on my mind when i got out of the hospital after a dvt blood clot. what about my family? my li'l buddy? and what if this happened again? i was given warfarin in the hospital but i wondered if this was the right treatment for me. then my doctor told me about eliquis. eliquis treats dvt and pe blood clots and reduces the risk of them happening again. not only does eliquis treat dvt and pe blood clots, but eliquis also had significantly less major bleeding than the standard treatment. knowing eliquis had both... turned around my thinking. don't stop eliquis unless your doctor tells you to. eliquis can cause serious and in rare cases fatal bleeding. don't take eliquis if you have an artificial heart valve or abnormal bleeding. if you had a spinal injection while on eliquis call your doctor right away if you have tingling, numbness, or muscle weakness.
10:46 am
while taking eliquis, you may bruise more easily... and it may take longer than usual for bleeding to stop. seek immediate medical care for sudden signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. eliquis may increase your bleeding risk if you take certain medicines. tell your doctor about all planned medical or dental procedures. eliquis treats dvt & pe blood clots. plus had less major bleeding. both made switching to eliquis right for me. ask your doctor if it's right for you. if a denture were to be put under a microscope, we can see all the bacteria that still exists. polident's unique micro clean formula works in just 3 minutes, killing 99.99% of odor causing bacteria. for a cleaner, fresher, brighter denture every day.

we are back now with today food as we begin our week-long series. the last hurrah. >> billy deck is here with one monster of a dish before you get back on the diet. what's up? >> good to be back. >> especially when you come with something like this. >> this is huge. this is going to be kind of healthy, right? >> totally. lot of things to get to. we have beautiful short rib, salt and pepper, bay leaves, thyme, of course, truffle paste, tater tots, tomato paste. there's a lot of love going into this dish. you will taste it. it's incredibly explosive in taste. first we will start searing the short rib. >> cut them off the bone? >> yep. cut them off the bone. do about an inch cubes. i have seasoned it, salt and pepper. there's a ton here.
10:49 am
this casserole is huge. you want to go for it? what we're doing is searing it in high heat. >> this is why it's great to do this with al. >> he knows his way. who cares if it's all over the counter? after that we will cook vegetables. what's great about browning the meat, it also browns the pan. there's all sorts of goodness on the bottom. cook the tomato paste for two minutes, let that sort of mingle in there with what's left from the cooked meat. then you can help me throw in all the vegetables, carrots, onions, celery. right in front of you, you have stout. you can pour all that stout in. how is it? >> good. >> yeah. big, bold savory flavors to go with this. >> much like john cena. >> he's big, bold and savory. >> yes, he is. >> your new tag line. >> this has not been my morning, guys. >> and then, you did such a good job with the short rib, we are ready to pour it right back in.
10:50 am
>> thyme and bay leaves. since we are br ashgsaising this, we put it in the oven until it's tender at 325. we have beef stock to add to this. you can add the other one. yeah. then we just cover that up and let it go slow and low until it's tender and wonderful. then we will make the sauce. we strain all the liquid out after it's absorbed all that amazing flavor. we have corn starch, always mix it with cold water. you don't want to pour it straight in. it will clump up on you. then you can sort of whisk away at that. that gets nice and thick. if you want, you can actually put this in the fridge at this point, the meat and sauce if you want to cook it later, fast for dinner. >> which helps because the fat rises to the top, you can skim that off. >> it's delicious after a couple days. you will get rid of the fat? that's the good part. >> just a little bit. >> go ahead and drop in
10:51 am
everything you see in front of you. you have all the short rib, some great mushrooms to add to it, some pearl onions which are a little more mild than regular onions. they have a little sweetness to go with the savioryory. then heavy cream. then my favorite, truffle paste. love this so much. i love it so much. >> you were concerned about trimming some of the fat off of this thing. >> smell that. you will love it. you like truffles? >> i do. >> you can use truffle oil. >> i'm sorry, you heard me? >> your inside voice again coming out. truffle oil. then you know what? we are ready to go. why don't you grab that, pour this right in here. what al and i are going to do when you're done -- >> this is going to be crazy. >> good job. then we throw the truffles,
10:52 am
tater tots on top, rebake. this went in at 350 for like 20 minutes. cheese on top. you can use any cheese you want. this is definitely a great melting cheese. throw it in the oven. it gets as beautiful as this, enjoy. >> thank you so much. love it. happy new year. today.com for our recipes.
