happy new year. some one million people gathered in times square to watch the crystal ball drop to welcome 2016. patrick: the 1200-pound ball was powered by over 32,000 l.e.d. lights. in bethlehem, pennsylvania, the sight of a giant peep chick dissenting -- this is still times square. square. in wisconsin a she's -- cheese drop. allyson: extra officers are on the roads. and that'll last through the weekend. the sober or slammer campaign is underway in south carolina right now. this year 946 people have died on south carolina roads. >> when you start to think about that, you start thinking 946 lives. that's the size of an average high school in south carolina. that's how many lives we've lost

allyson: the extra officers on the roads will also look for speeders, distracted drivers, and people not using their seat belts. one of three suspects connected to the death of a former upstate youth pastor's wife now faces more charges. patrick: larry taylor jr. is connected to the death of amanda blackburn. blackburn was married to newspring youth pastor davey blackburn. the murder happened in indianapolis. nbc reports that taylor now faces charges in an unsolved murder of a man who was shot over $10 on november 4th. blackburn was killed after a burglary last month. officials say her death was part of a crime spree that started on november 3rd. allyson: the greenville county sheriff's office traffic unit paid a visit to fellow deputy dave dempsey. you may recall dempsey was shot in the head earlier this month while on the job. the sheriff's office says he's in rehabilitation and has a long road ahead. but they say his progress is "truly a miracle." patrick: damage caused by potholes in spartanburg county

dollars. in fact, one particular pothole opened up again after it was filled. this is on anderson mill road in front of the londonderry subdivision. several people got flat tires and damaged rims after hitting the pothole. road crews say they had to fill the hole four times this week because the material is being washed away. >> i think that they could have maybe put up signage just to alert other drivers that that pothole is there. patrick: that woman says she's paying more than $700 in repairs. the department of transportation says you can file a claim on their website to be reimbursed for damages caused by potholes. we're told they typically reimburse drivers if the agency already knew about the pothole . allyson: 5:08. we're still recovering from all the rain and flooding.

allyson: in upstate new york, an ex-convict is under arrest, accused of planning a new year's eve terror attack. federal authorities say emanuel lutchman claimed to have received direction from an overseas member of isis. he planned to carry out the attack last night at a bar in the rochester area. he's 25 year old. authorites say he bought knives and a machete for the attack. he was caught in an fbi sting operation. patrick: with the new year comes new laws in many states. the state of texas will start allowing some firearm owners to carry handguns openly in public places. under the texas law, guns can only be carried by those with licenses and gun holsters. meanwhile, california has multiple new laws which tighten gun control. one law tightens a ban on

another will allow people to request that a judge order weapons be taken away from relatives who are believed to pose a threat. the swollen mississippi river continues to cause widespread destruction throughout missouri and parts of illinois. officials say the river rose nearly 15 feet above flood stage throughout st. louis county. this is forcing backups in the rivers that flow into the mississippi, causing them to overflow and flood nearby homes. crews were out draining highways and sandbagging homes to prevent even further damage yesterday. state officials say there are no deaths or injuries reported. several roads are beginning to reopen. allyson: celebrating the new year. a couple who got married 80 years ago.

people and floats are preparing for the 102nd annual new year's day tournament of roses parade. families have been camping out overnight to get priri-time sidewalk spots. officials expect more than 700,000 people to line colorado boulevard to watch the parade festivities. pasadena police say extra officers, surveillance cameras, and other security measures will be in place. but they say they best resources are the parade-goers themselves. >> you get the best seat in pasadena for the parade, because you're right on the front row. >> respect what they've got to do to keep us safe. i mean, that's -- that's what works for me. >> don't rationalize it. if it's concerning on your initial observation, you think it's concerning enough, then give us a call. allyson: the rose bowl football game will kick off between the stanford cardinal and iowa hawkeyes at 5:00 p.m. eastern time. now a look at how people across the nation are celebrating the new year. patrick: people in wisconsin are

big cheese drop. hundreds gathered at the plymouth arts center for the ninth annual new year's eve celebration. this year, the 80-pound cheese wedge dropped about 100 feet at the family-friendly time of 10:00 p.m. families were treated to free food and entertainment. the cheese capital of the world even offered complimentary wedges to its guests. in bethlehem, pennsylvania, the sight of a giant peeps chick descending from the sky is reason to cheer. allyson: hundreds of people turned out last night for a family-friendly new year's eve festival called peeps-fest. at this celebration, a giant 85-pound peep was lowered after sunset. it was still 2015 when the peeps chick touched the ground, but no one seemed to care. it was followed by a fireworks celebration. you may ask why bethlehem chose the peep. that's because that city is where the marshmallow treats are manufactured.

here you're checking out the fireworks in denver, colorado. the show there started at 9:00 central time. happy new year, denver. patrick: beautiful. now to this morning's headlines. medal of honor recipient kyle carpenter has been arrested. carpenter is charged with hit-and-run and making an improper left turn. as you may recall, carpenter received the medal of honor in 2014 for his actions as a marine in afghanistan in 2010. police say carpenter hit a pedestrian earlier this month in columbia. authorities say the person was treated at the scene for scrapes and a leg injury. carpenter is a university of south carolina student. allyson: an upstate police chief believes one thing saved his officer's life after she was attacked last month. new holsters were bought for anderson police officers with money seized in drug cases. those holsters require a combination of moves the user must know to release the gun. in november, someone wearing a black hoodie and black skeleton mask attacked an officer. forcefully threw her to the ground trying to get her gun.

the holster. >> there is no doubt in my mind, with the struggle that took place over this weapon, that his intention was to kill her. allyson: two suspects were arrested the night of the attack at a nearby apartment on miracle mile drive. kristi hendrix and bryan gary face drug charges. but the chief says both had ties to the scene. he thinks they know something about the assault. a $1,000 reward is on the table. if you can help, call crimestoppers at 888-crime-sc. patrick: a trailer full of tools stolen from an office right outside of downtown greenville. the trailer belonged to rebuild upstate. it's a non-profit that helps countless low-income homeowners in oconee, pickens, anderson and greenville counties. the trailer was in this parking lot on green avenue and was last seen on tuesday. inside was more than $4,000 worth of supplies used to help families. >> to us it's not just a trailer. the trailer is important, but
