40 3-46 is the expected the mountains will just struggle for today. we will talk about the rest of the week in a few minutes. allyson: today is the final day for those who suffered damage in october's historical floods to request federal help. geoff: fema aid is available in 24 counties across the state including greenville, spartanburg and greenwood counties. let's take a look at one of the hardest hit areas in the upstate. this is wilson creek off of highway 702. you can see trees submerged as the water rushes by. the surrounding area is completely flooded. we also have video from the chinquapin subdivision. flood waters overpowered a pond's emergency spillway. this is one of many areas that sparked the federal government to take action. today's deadline is only for damage from october's record flooding. aly myles will join us live from wilson creek later in the show. allyson: people in missouri are returning to their flood-ravaged homes for the first time in

nearly a week to assess the damage. geoff: in the hardest hit towns, neighborhood streets were littered with piles of debris. hundreds of structures were damaged when the mississippi river swelled to record flood stage levels after a f ft of rain fell in three days. president barack obama approved the governor's request for federal aid. most of the floodwaters have receded, but residents say the nightmare is just getting started. activists in greenville are using balloons to put a teen's unsolved murder, back in the spotlight. allyson: a b bloon release in the nicholtown community of greenville, honored cobey smith last night. the teen's mother joined organizers of the put down the guns young people organization. group leaders say they will release balloons everyday until january 26 hoping someone will come forward with information. cobey smith was shot to death on 2015. january 25, the 16 year's old body was found near a trail that runs along the field behind sterling school.

a $2000 reward was offered for information that helps solve the case. if you know something call crimestoppers. geoff: a gastonia man who police say shot his wife in the face in court today. joseph zinna is facing charges of first-degree murder and attempted murder. police say the 48-year-old went to his neighbor's home on new year's day and shot him with a 12-gauge shotgun. investigators say zinna also shot his wife, while she was in a moving vehicle. investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a deadly house fire that happened over the weekend. allyson: the fire was saturday night on aberdare court in greenville. officials say 51-year-old barbara ann kern became unresponsive at the scene and later died at the hospital. a family friend left a card and flower yesterday at kern's home, on aberdare court. kern's friend says this was the second death in two years in that family. geoff: buncombe county officials are investigating an apartment fire. it started early sunday morning at the rock bridge apartments. firefighters say everyone had gotten out by the time they

arrived. three people were taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. first responders say it took two hours to get the fire under control. four apartments were damaged. one was destroyed. allyson: a greenville county council woman is in the hospital recovering from a stroke. the council chairman told wyff news 4, that lottie gibson was hospitalized yesterday after suffering from a stroke. we are told she is stable. right now it's too early to tell whether gibson will be able to perform her duties on the council. the next council meeting is tomorrow. evangelist franklin graham hits the road this week for a 50-state tour urging conservative christians to the polls this election year. multiple media organizations report graham starts tomorrow with a rally in des moines, iowa. the iowa caucus takes place next month. graham is scheduled to be in south carolina in february graham says he's encouraging christians to vote for candidates who uphold biblical principles.

geoff: in other news this morning the site of the san , bernardino shooting rampage that killed 14 people, and hurt 21 others, will re-open today. there will be tighter security as the inland regional center's 600 employees go back to work. the center has been closed since the december second mass shooting. allyson: also happening today. president barack obama tackles gun n ntrol with the attorney general. president obama meets with loretta lynch today to talk about what steps he can take to stem gun violence. it's expected the president will use executive action to strengthen background checks for gun purchases. gyms across the area are very popular right now as people promise to get fit in the new year. but many people have a tough time sticking with those resolutions. allyson:dale:geoff: their last long. trainers at the ymca in greenville say it's important to have a plan you're able to accomplish. roughly 3500 people usually sign up at locations in greenville county every january. but trainers say a lot of those people only stick with it for a

traffic is picking up a little bit in down on 385 as we look out at our woodruff road skycam. we are not seeing any precipitation. don't expect any for the next couple of days across the mountains and the upstate. just clear and cold each morning. temperatures gradually get back to normal by midweek. watching snow flurries in the ohio valley area, virginia's, and the carolina close dutch coast. right now, mostly clear conditions are ready region. checking in on the mountain communities, 29 in haywood county, 30 in marshall, 33 in asheville, 32 in brevard. typical across the mountains. quite a range of temperatures in the upstate are greenville, 38, pickens, 26, easily at 30. anderson and star in the low 30's. let's add in the wind and show you how it feels.

how much money is on the line.and in fayetteville, north carolin allyson: 5:11 now, covering the nation. in fayetteville, north carolina a pastor says he protected his congregation from a man who walked into the church with a rifle and a magazine of ammunition. pastor larry wright, who is also a member of the city council there, says he walked up to the man and asked if he could help him. the pastor says he took the gun and hugged the man, who then committed his life to jesus. the pastor says the man told him that he wanted to hurt someone that day, but felt compelled to ask the church for help. police took the man toa mental health facility. protest is underway. a group of so-called militia men are occupying a federal building at a wildlife refuge. the stand-off came after the militia members showed up in the small town of burns to support a pair of ranchers convicted for arson. after a march and rally, the small group took over the national wildlife refuge

no precipitation falling unknown expected today. the thing that is magnificent colder this morning is the wind blowing. 15-25 mile-per-hour wind in the mountains. across the mountains, it will be five to 10. it is feeling more like teens when the wind blows. spartanburg, turkey, union, jonesville, 35, rutherfordton at 36. it feels cooler with the breeze. across the mountains and upstate, the temperatures will drop a few more degrees and then start to climb. 19-20 mile-per-hour plus wind in hendersonville and asheville makes it feel like 16 this morning for the windchill make sure the kids are dressed warmly as they head off to work and school. it will be like 45-46. the record of 80 set back in

the asheville regional airport out a 30 year basis averages 27 in the morning here that is where we will be. an afternoon high of 47. not today. only a 10 degree climb into the mid-30's for today. there is snow in the ohio valley area. a few spots in the rockies getting winter weather. rain in southern florida. most of the country is feeling chilly as we head off to work along a long -- after a long holiday break. but getting back to school with chilly temperatures and warm jacket is a good idea. by 2:00, 3:00 this afternoon, it is pushing mid 40's for the upstate. the mountains will cement 30's today. here is a quick look ahead with the four-day plus forecast. dry weather through wednesday. a slight chance of showers thursday afternoon as clouds build back in. temperatures are back to normal by thursday. friday, a good chance of rain, 60%. dry for saturday. sunday, a 40% chance of showers.

as we cover the carolinas, in north carolina, police say a man lost control of his car, went airborne, and crashed into a house. this happened near raleigh. investigators say the man was trapped in the car and had to be rescued. the house is vacant, so no one else was hurt. police say the man's speed may have caused the crash. a three-year-old girl is found after new mexico police say someone stole her mother's car with the child in the backseat. >> hi sweetheart, you ok? come here. come here. i know, come here. geoff: police say the mother of three-year-old caraline was filling up water jugs outside of a gas station saturday. when a man stole her car with caraline still inside. the car was found about three miles from the store but with no girl inside. a few hours later, albuquerque police officer chris poccia noticed something or someone huddled in an empty parking lot. caraline was not hurt and was reunited with her mother.

not been found. allyson: officials say 4 men died canoeing in a wisconsin lake. police received a missing persons call just before noon yesterday and found an overturned canoe floating in the lake. rescuers searched the icy waters and recovered the 4 men's bodies. the east troy police chief says the lake can be a treacherous place in the winter. >> it's dangerous to be on the water at night. it's dangerous to be on the water when it's really cold. two, it leads to a tragic situation. allyson: according to officials the canoers were last seen alive around 2:00 a.m. geoff: search teams in illinois have found the body of a second teen missing since massive flooding hit the area last week. search crews found the body of 18-year-old brandon mann yesterday. three days ago the body of 18-year-old devan everett was found. mann's body was found northwest of where their vehicle was located on thursday. for six days. nine crews searched the area, by

teens. the national transportation safety board has released new underwater images of the sunken el faro. the cargo ship sank last october after getting caught in a hurricane on its way to san juan. it's considered the worst maritime disaster in nearly half a century. all 33 mariners on board died. the ntsb hopes to find the ship's black box, which would contain more information on the fatal incident. allyson: at least six people are dead and 50 injured in an earthquake in india's remote northeastern region. some buildings collapsed in a city of about 270,000 people. the powerful 6.8 magnitude quake struck while many residents were asleep. the casualty toll was expected to rise. rescue efforts were hampered by power and communications outages. geoff: security in tel aviv is elevated. as police continue looking for the gunman who shot two people at a bar there on friday. schools are getting extra protection. funerals were held yesterday for

the victims of the attack. israel's prime minister warns israelis needed to be vigilant. allyson: in a bizarre scene over the weekend. a lion was spotted floating in the arabian sea off india's western coast. local fishermen spotted the lion sitting on the edge of a rock and then diving into the sea. forest officials were called in to rescue the animal. a rescue team safely lifted the lion from the water, tranquilized it and sent it to an animal care center. after proper treatment the lion will be released back into the wild. an investigation is underway to determine how exactly the lion got there. geoff: turning to our wyff 4 timeline on this monday morning, january 4, on this date in 2007 congress elected nancy pelosi the first female speaker of the , house of representatives. allyson: as speaker pelosi was second in line of presidential succession following the vice-president. she relinquished that post on
