43 to 45 for the upstate this afternoon. mid-30's for the mountains today. we will talk about the rest of the week in a few minutes. geoff: if you're in need of help after october's historical flooding, today is the final day for people who suffered damage to request federal help. allyson: one of the hardest hit areas in the upstate is greenwood county. that's where wyff news 4's aly myles joins us live. aly: this is actually as close as we can get to that area, which is still shut down months later. closed behind me. highway 702. as you said, it was one of the hardest hit areas here in the upstate. pretty calm now, but let me show it is still shut down. we saw a bridge closed sign about half a mile back. let's take a look at video from the october flooding. you can see trees submerged as the water rushes by. the surrounding area flooded. we also have video from the chinquapin subdivision. flood waters overpowered a

director to discuss executive actions on gun control. the oval office meeting follows a two-week hawaiian vacation for the first family. the president is now back in washington and ready take action on guns, bypassing congress. presidential candidates had a partisan reaction to the president's plan. >> what the president is trying to do now is to expand the instant background check by closing the gun show loophole. >> all they want to do is blame the guns, and it's not the gun that pulls the trigger, so i don't like it. i don't like what he's doing. aixa: the president is expected to talk about new gun control this next week when he delivers his final state of the union address. allyson: aixa, in addition to expanded background checks, what else is the president expected to announce? aixa: the president's plan is expected to impose tighter rules for reporting guns that get lost or stolen. this plan will also beef up inspections of licensed dealers.

exclusive washington newsroom. thank you so much for being with us this morning. allyson: some other candidate news this morning. several are stumping today in iowa four weeks before the caucuses. former president bill clinton will begin campaigning for his wife in new hampshire. geoff: happening today in san bernardino, california, a social services center is set to reopen two buildings weeks after a mass that mass shooting. a third building, which was the site of the shooting, is closed indefinitely. a memorial service will also be held today to honor the 14 victims. here in the upstate, investigators are trying to figure out the cause of a deadly house fire in greenville this weekend. that fire happened saturday night on aberdare court. officials say 51-year-old barbara ann kern became unresponsive at the scene and later died at the hospital. a family friend left a card and flower yesterday at kern's home on aberdare court. kern's friend says this was the second death in two years in that family. investigators in buncombe county are trying to figure out what started a fire at an apartment

the fire started early sunday morning at the rock bridge apartments. firefighters say everyone had gotten out by the time they arrived. three people were taken to the hospital to be treated for burns. first responders say it took about two hours to get the fire under control. four apartments were damaged one . one was destroyed. allyson: activists in greenville are using balloons to put a teen's unsolved murder back in the spotlight. organizers of the put down the guns now young people organization say they will release balloons every day in the nicholton community until january 26. they hope someone will come forward with information in the case of cobey smith's death. a runner found the 16-year-old's body on january 25 last year near a trail behind sterling school. a $2,000 reward was offered then for information that helps solve the case. call crime stoppers with any information. geoff: a greenville county council woman is in the hospital recovering from a stroke.

like it is in the teens this morning. as we look our projected highs for today, 52 would be the normal high but we will not get there today. maybe 43 or 45 maybe the best we see. asheville normally sees temperatures in the upper 40's, but upper 20's at 9:00 a.m. climbed to 33 or 35 for the afternoon. tomorrow, 40 to 44 for the high. that is starts to go in the other direction as far as afternoon highs. by thursday, we will be back to normal. very cold for the next couple of mornings. make sure the kids dress warmly as they wait for the school bus. allyson: as we are getting back up and out after the holidays this morning, take a look at the roads. already busy. the interested are looking good so far, so that is good news. we have a few accidents with injuries.
