what they were saying just a few days ago. we are seeing way, way colder temperatures than last week. right now, our car thermometer is reading about 16 degrees. on friday, the ski area and maggie valley was not the progress and the chill came and started making snow. >> the snowfall from the sky makes everything look pretty, lets you think it is winter, but we have already skied 32 days this year and we would have had our stuff on the ground no matter what. aly: the cold is expected to stick around for a while. i'm sure dale has been telling you, but his forecast calls for temperatures in the lower 20's later tonight. hopefully, we will be able to have fun with that in a little while. aly myles wyff news 4 live in maggie valley.

remember, when the snow hits, we have the latest updates. the app is free to download and available in apple and android app store's. michael slager is out of jail and on house arrest. he's the former north charleston police officer charged with killing an unarmed black man. a south carolina judge set his bond yesterday at a half a million dollars. slager had to pay $50,000 in bail money to be released. the judge also set slager's trial to begin october 31. he will remain under house arrest until then. cell phone video showed slager shoot walter scott last april after scott ran n om a traffic stop. geoff: an update in anderson county, for the first time since , they are working on a new law. deputy brandon surratt had been with hyco for six years. he says he supports a bill in the works called hyco's and fargo's law. fargo was a k-9 killed in richland county in 2011. the law would increase prison time and add a potential fine

animals. >> we ask these k9s to go into buildings after bad guys, exactly what we do. we call them a deputy also. geoff: surratt also wants to thank the community for its support after hyco's death. allyson: pickens county will now seek legal help to fight having coal ash disposed there. company mmr pickens agreed with the county in 2007 to allow construction debris to go into a landfill near liberty, but officials learned the company now wants to dump coal ash. the county council voted no to it last night, saying it's not part of the agreement. geoff: the oconee nuclear power plant will undergo inspection today after the discovery of degraded power cables. the nuclear regulatory commission will inspect the power cables for two of the plant's three units. the inspection will take several days. the plant is located near seneca about thirty miles west of

note the prizes with this being a pretty polarizing debate. the president says he strongly believes congress should address the problem but he insists everything he is announcing this morning is legal and within his executive authority. >> this is not going to solve every violent crime in this country, it will not prevent every mass shooting, it will not keep every gun out of the hands of criminals. it will potentially save lives. nikole: the president actions will extend background checks by requiring anyone in the business of selling guns to obtain a license. he is also calling for hiring 230 new fbi examiners to help with the checks and more funding or mental health. some critics charge that his actions are unconstitutional and infringe on america's second amendment rights. the president will go a lot more initiatives, including the town

local ranchers from returning to prison in their roles in the burning of federal land but they want to restrict the reach over wildland and then do land transfers. the two ranchers turn themselves in on monday in san pedro, california. allyson: the police involved shooting shotgun all lanes for hours. the suspect is in critical condition and they led the los angeles police on a wild chase monday. he is wanted for murder, carjacking, and robbery in two separate california areas. during the chase, gasparyan drove on the wrong side of the interstate and crashed into a car. gasparayan was shot and wounded as he ran away from police. he was cut later in the night. -- caught later in the night. geoff: that 93, a man has a goal of the different caliber than you would think. dale: a light breeze makes it

the best news for all of you who love snow and winter, take a look behind me. you can see how beautiful that is for those of you who like snow. they have been making snow all night long. we were talking with the snow maker who came down the hill over there and he says it has been a rough season. they have only been open for about 10 days. they have made four feet of snow overnight and they are taking every second they can to enjoy just how cold the weather is and can make as much snow as possible. it is above tree line right now, the cloud of snow coming over there. he says it is about 120 gallons of water a minute. they will be open around 10:00 today. he says it still have to get all of the grooming done and everything else. i don't know if you can see it over here, but i will throw a curveball up my photographer. the groomers are right over here.

about thirty miles west of greenville. geoff: enjoying a panoramic view of the mountains of north and south carolina is about to become easier. the south carolina department of natural resources says it's going forward with a plan to build a viewing platform on sassafras mountain. that's the tallest point in south carolina at 3,553 feet above sea level. dnr expects to break ground later this spring and have the platform ready this summer. dale: that will be fun. allyson: i think that would be neat. geoff: that is a must go to. allyson: we will hike up there but not today. it is cold. dale: you better dress warmly if you are thinking about that. can you imagine all the rain we have had recently if the cold there had been in place?

allyson: cold weather is causing concerns on the roads in western north carolina. geoff: delays include avery county schools, yancey county schools and tri-county christian schools. let's check in with dale. dale: it was windy and cold in the upstate and we saw the flurries in north carolina yesterday. overnight, we have not seen you precipitation and then expected. cold temperatures as you begin the day.

teens in the upstate, too, ware shoals at 18, greenville at 26. the temperaturur will rebound a little and climb into the low 40's for the upstate and upper 30's in the mountains. temperatures are gradually going to get warmer with the windchill coming into play, breaking boone feel like seven and asheville feel like 13. tomorrow, a couple degrees better and back to normal by thursday. cold overnight but during the day, low 50's. not as cold overnight for friday through the weekend and into the start of next week. friday and sunday are the best chances of getting rain. saturday looks good for outdoor plans and monday looks good for heading back to work and school. allyson: cold temperatures making parts of north carolina look like winter. the time lapse behind us from resort cam.com.

with more on the conditions. aly: if you could hear those snow makers before, i am almost sure you can hear them now. take a look at this behind me. so much snow being made in maggie valley. about 16 degrees, a wake-up call after those lololy 70 degree mornings. you can see just how much snow -- about four feet of snow overnight -- and they have only been open about 10 days this ski season. according to the snow maker, making surthe machines are running per usual, he says it is a thankless job and not so easy on the mountain. easier out here when they can set them up but when they are traveling at two feet to repeat of snow, if you see the snow maker, thanked them. i do this once a year, make sure to embrace it.
