currently, 25 in anderson. let's check on a few other counties. pickens at 24. salem at 27 degrees. 25 degrees in anderson and belton. 18 degrees in asheville. that will climb today into the low 40's. that is basically what we see for the upstate as well, low-to-mid 40's. a little breeze makes it feel like 16th in greenville and 17 degrees in greenwood. the winds will be from the east at 5-10 miles per hour. the mountains will reach the low 40's today. the temperatures will be more mild tomorrow. we will talk about the chance for rain in the latter part of the week in our next report. allyson: these temperatures can create a messy situation.

aly: if you take a look behind me, you can see the fountain. you can just see the amount of bicycles currently hanging off of the fountain. -- you can see the amount of icicles currently hanging off the fountain. the fountain is still running. keep in mind, your pipes are likely to freeze at this temperature. we are a couple degrees away threshold. they say, at 20 degrees or below, pipes are vulnerable to freeze, but it can still happen at these temperatures. the best way to tell if you have a frozen pipe if you turn on a fafaet and only a trickle comes out. pipes running against exterior walls or where your water enters the home through the foundation

there have been rumors that this speech could mean a possible vice presidential run. last fall, haley says she would consider joining the gop ticket if asked. president barack obama is talklkg about gun control. allyson: he saiiit is his biggest frustration in office, to pass the gun-control legislation. yesterday, president obama issued executive orders to tighten the rules requiring background checks on gun sales in our nation. he got emotional citing the mass shootings at columbine virginia tech and sandy hook elementary obama: every time i think about those kids, it gets me mad. a step up in research and technology to make sure triggers aren't pulled accidentally. there would also be a push for expanded treatment for mental illness nationwide. more people would be hired to process paperwork to make the system more efficient. south carolina attorney general alan wilson says president obama

presidency. he said tuesday, quote, too often this president attempts to govern with his pen. presidents do not have the power to trump the rule of law with a signature on a piece of paper. to afghanistan now, a u.s. service member was killed and two ototrs were wounded. geoff: defense officials say it happened during an ongoioi operation against the taliban. officials say a medical helicopter was hit by a mortar while on the ground. they say it was able to take off. the name of the service member has not been released. civil rights groups are not happy that former police officer michael slager is out of jail. allyson: slager was charged with killing an unarmed black man last april. he was released on bond monday. that sparked threats of, quote, midnight madness by civil rights groups. >> we are connected i ithis fight and we will fight. we want him back in jail. we demand him being back in jail. allyson: north charleston mayor

be prepared for whatever that means, but does not think it would help help the groups gain any support. he says the city locked up slager and it was the court system that let him out on bond. geoff: a spike in tensions on the korean peninsula. north korea says it has just conducted a successful test of a hydrogen bomb. south korea believes the bomb was atomic and not hydrogen. the un security council has tentatively set an emergency meeting. state-run media released these photos they say show kim jong un signing the order for the test. china says it is firmly opposing the test and is monitoring the the test site. allyson: a suspect remains in the hospital after 11 children and a woman for rescued from a hostage situation in georgia. it happened yesterday morning at a hotel in dekalb county. police responded to a call about a domestic-related assault.

holding them hostage at knife point. hours later a swat team rescued the 12 people. police say thomas stabbed himself in the neck. geoff: a friend of san bernardino gunman syed farook is set to be arraigned today. allyson: although officials say enrique marquez did not take part in the december 2 mass shooting, he is accused of buying two of the weapons used in the attack. charges against enrique marquez include providing material support to terrorists, making false statements, and marriage fraud. if convicted on all charges, marquez could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. geoff: a massachusetts mother is due in court in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter. rachelle bond is set to be arraigned and charged with being an accessory after the fact to the murder of bella bond. the child's remains were found on a beach near logan airport last june. that is just outside of boston. bond is also being charged with larceny for continuing to accept public assistance benefits for her daughter after the child's

allyson: dale, when can we expect these colder mornings to turn warmer? dale: it will be better tomorrow. more clouds build and it will be warmer for the second half of this week. it will be in the teens and 20's outside this morning. ask her to give their kids -- make sure to give your kids a warm coat this morning. the breeze makes it feel even colder. we have no precipitation and so, no delays on mountain roads. asheville at 18 degrees. look at boone, it is 11 degrees. 16 degrees in franklin and 23 in laurens. it is the coldest in the mountains. 18 in canton.

peared in court in los angeles tuesday. tonya couch agreed to be sent to texas to face a felony charge of hindering apprehension. authorities believe she and her son ethan fled to mexico in november. prosecutors were investigating whether he violated his probation. couch was sentenced to 10 years probation for a drunk driving crash that killed four people. he blamed his affluent upbringing for his behavior. he remains in mexico and is fighting deportation to the u.s.. geoff: in georgia, the governor has rescinded his executive order that barred state agencies from taking syrian refugees. governor nathan deal announced the order monday, just days after attorney general sam olens said georgia can't legally stop the resettlement of syrian refugees. in november, following the paris terror attacks, deal joined other governors who halted any involvement in the acceptance of syrian refugees. allyson: millions across the country are giving lady luck a chance. and why not? the powerball jackpot is now an estimated $450 million for the

temperatures are in the teens and 20's across the area with a 5-7 mile per hour breeze. it makes it feel like 18 and spartanburg and 17 degrees in greenwood. normally this time of the year we have 52 as a high and 32 as a low. it was 71 degrees in 1955. today, we will be seven degrees cooler than normal temperatures in the 4 4s. the mountains often get up to 47, but today 42 may be the best we seeee nationally, we are seeing some snow in parts of oklahoma and kansas, as well as western missouri. we have rain in southern florida. up and done the east coast it is clear and cold. washington is at 22 degrees this morning. saturday will be partly cloudy and 64 degrees.

accepting glass for recycling. officials say these changes are necessary to continue providing recycling services. allyson: spartanburg is growing at a rate that is unmatched. geoff: the city has welcomed 57 new businesses and 500 new jobs. poppies tacos is a product of greenville's group. miyako sushi group, which opened in 2000, is moving to the building next door. they'll feature a roof top bar. >> spartanburg is a biggest economic development story, not just in n e upstate, but in the state of south carolina. geoff: construction is also underway for the a.c. by marriott highrise hotel. and construction at the hub city co-op grocery store is making progress. allyson: nearly two dozen trees are coming down on furman university's campus.

trees. they plan to plant 22 healthy trees, mostly around the library. this is the fourth year crews have used the holiday break while students are away to remove trees around campus. school officials say the old trees have been around since furman moved to northern greenville county in the 1950's. now, many are rotted and dying. >> unfortunately, we happen to be here when they are coming to the end of their lifespan. we are just trying to preserve the beauty and aesthetics for the future. allyson: crews plan to remove and replace almost 200 trees all around campus during this time every year. geoff: dabo swinney and the tigers met with the media. allyson: the storylines about dabo swinney growing up in alabama and playing at alabama. a huge part of the run up to the biggest game of the year. ricardo lacombe has more from
