another cold morning. dale: we are talking teens and 20's across the region. clear skies, so no problems as far as ice from precipitation. 23 degrees currently in greenville and temperatures in the teens in the mountains of north carolina. a cold beginning to the day. by the afternoon, though to mid 40's at best. make sure the kids have a warm coat. 23 will climb to 45 for the ride home in the mountains of north carolina and northeastern georgia, teens will climb to low 40's today. a few showers this week. we will show you when in a couple of minutes. allyson: we have been telling you the past couple of mornings it is really cold and aly myles knows that pass. aly: another tough assignment. aly myles is downtown checking on icy conditions.

today i know it is icy and snowy. check a look at that fountain just covered in ice and cold this morning. luckily, the roads are not to icy and pretty dry, but always be careful. something you do need to keep in mind before you leave the house, take a look at your pipes. according to the insurance institute for home safety, we're just a couple of degrees from the temperature alert threshold. they say at 20 degrees or below, pipes are vulnerable to freeze but it can still happen at these temperatures. the best way to tell if you have a frozen pipe is if you turn on a faucet, and only a trickle comes out. pipes running against exterior walls or where your water enters the home through the foundation are most likely to freeze. keeping your faucet open, applying a heated pad or hair dryer to a frozen pipe and applying heat until full water pressure is restored can help. that will keep your home safe

do not use a torch to try to unfreeze. and if you can not thaw the pipe, call a plumber. aly myles live in greenville. allyson: thank you. for the first time, a south carolinian will be giving the gop response to the state of the union address. geoff: governor nikki haley will make the speech on january 12. governor haley says she will talk about the challenges and opportunities americans face when she delivers the gop response. political analyst chip felkel say it's no surprise haley was chosen for this gig. >> she is seen as one of the rising star governors in the country. it's an honor. >> we had a lot of terrific things happen to our state, in our state, and she lead when the national eye was on south carolina with a very steady hand. geoff: as you know, haley was in the national spotlight this summer after helping lead the fight to take down the confederate flag from state house grounds. there have been rumors that this speech could mean a possible vice presidential run. last fall, haley says she would

if asked. president barack obama has called it the biggest frustration of his time in office. allyson: his struggle to pass gun control legislation. yesterday, president obama issued executive orders to tighten the rules, requiring background checks on gun sales in our nation. he got emotional, citing the mass shootings at columbine virginia tech, and sandy hook , elementary. >> every time i think about those kids, it gets me mad. allyson: he's also calling for a step-up in research and technology to make sure triggers aren't pulled accidentally. there would also be a push for expanded treatment for mental illness nationwide. plus, more people would be hired to process paperwork to make the system more efficient. south carolina attorney general alan wilson says president obama is overstepping the power of the presidency. he said tuesday, quote, "too often this president attempts to govern with his pen. presidents do not have the power

signature on a piece of paper." now to afghanistan, a u.s. service member was killed and two others wounded yesterday. geoff: defense officials say it happened during an ongoing operation against the taliban. officials say a medical helicopter was hit by a mortar while on the ground. they say it was able to take off. the name of the service member has not been released. civil rights groups are threatening action now that former north charleston police officer michael slager is out of jail. allyson: slager was charged with killing an unarmed black man last april. he was released on bond monday. that sparked threats of, quote, "midnight madness" by civil rights groups. >> we are united in this fight and we will fight. we want him back in jail. we demand him being back in jail. allyson: north charleston mayor keith summey said the city will be prepared for whatever that means but doesn't think it would help the groups gain any support. he says the city locked up slager and it was the court system that let him out on bond. geoff: a spike in tensions on the korean peninsula. north korea says it has just

hydrogen bomb. south korea believes the bomb was atomic and not hydrogen. the u.n. security council has tentatively set an emergency meeting. state-run media released these photos they say show kim jong un signing the order for the test. north korea's main ally, china, says it firmly opposes the test and is monitoring the environment on its border with the north near the test site. allyson: authorities say they are helping a woman and 11 children find safe housing after they were rescued from a hostage situation in georgia. it happened yesterday morning at a hotel in dekalb county. police responded to a call about a domestic-related assault. they say korrie thomas was holding them hostage at knife point. hours later, a swat team rescued the 12 people. police say thomas stabbed himself in the neck. he was taken to a local hospital. geoff: a friend of san bernardino gunman syed farook is set to be arraigned today. allyson: although officials say

shooting, he is accused of buying two of the weapons used in the attack. charges against enrique marquez include providing material support to terrorists, making false statements and marriage fraud. if convicted on all charges, marquez could be sentenced to up to 50 years in prison. geoff: also happening today, a massachusetts mother is due in court in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter. rachelle bond is set to be arraigned and charged with being an accessory after the fact to the murder of bella bond. the child's remains were found on a beach near logan airport last june. bond is also being charged with larceny for continuing to accept public assistance benefits for her daughter after the child's death. allyson: checking back in the deal now and it is cold, but if you have weekend plans, it may not be as bad. dale: it improves temperature wise toward the end of the week.

because we are talking teens and low 20's as we step outdoors. dry weather but cold and a light breeze makes it feel colder. let's check on some communities. 23 in spartanburg, union and 24, in minute 22, rutherfordton and forrest city in the 20 to 22 range and teens from asheville to franklin to andrews. a light breeze in upstate with a five to eight mile per hour breeze in greenville and spartanburg and it makes it feel like it is in the teens, so dress warmly. by the afternoon, we get into mid 40's, low 50's are typical this time of the year. we will be about seven degrees cooler than what we normally see for the upstate and mountains today. a quick look ahead, tomorrow low 50's. getting back to normal.

friday looks to be the best chance of rain. saturday looks like a good day to get outdoors. >> as the occupation of an oregon wildlife refuge enters its fifth day, the sheriff here is planning a community meeting for tonight to answer questions from concerned citizens. meanwhile, the armed antigovernment protesters who are here at the refuge say they have no plans to leave anytime soon. we'll have the very latest for you coming up this morning on "today." allyson: taking a look outside. another cold morning with construction that could slow you down.

geoff: thank you for being with us on this cold wednesday morning. we are counting down to college football's national championship . dabo swinney and the tigers met with the media yesterday in clemson. allyson: the storylines about dabo swinney growing up in alabama and playing at alabama, a huge part of the run up to the biggest game of the year. ricardo lecompte has more with the head coach from clemson. ricardo growing up in pelham, : alabama, clemson head coach dabo swinney love the tide, loved bear bryant, played under gene stallings and his first coaching gig came as a grad assistant and on monday night, he'll try to win first national championship as head coach against his alma mater. >> it's kind of cool. i mean, you know, i think it's neat. i think god has got a sense of

the social media network is loosening the decade-old restriction on the length of tweets. they appear ready to lift their 140-character limit. a federal judge has agreed to delete the deposition of bill cosby's wife. last week, a judge ordered her to give a deposition as part of a defamation suit against her husband. the defamation case involves seven women. they all have accused bill cosby of drugging and sexually assaulting them. the comedian was arrested in pennsylvania on a sexual assault charge last week. he is free on a million dollar bond. that arrest stems from an alleged incident from 2004. the comedian has denied any wrongdoing. allyson: this week marks one year since terrorists stormed the charlie hebdo newspaper and a kosher supermarket in paris, killing 17-people. yesterday, french president francois hollande unveiled a plaque honoring the victims. the newspaper released a special issue this week with the headline, "the murderer is still

geoff: meanwhile, security is still tight in paris. particularly in shopping centers and supermarkets following the terror attacks over a month ago. authorities say some 2500 soldiers are still deployed on the streets. officials say it is costing them over $1.5 million a day geoff:. geoff: -- $1.5 million a day. france still remains under a state of emergency. the november 13 attacks killed 130 people. allyson: in georgia, the governor has rescinded his executive order that barred state agencies from taking syrian refugees. governor nathan deal announced the order monday, just days after attorney general sam olens said georgia can't legally stop the resettlement of syrian refugees. in november, following the paris terror attacks, deal joined other governors who halted any involvement in the acceptance of syrian refugees. geoff: a new hampshire man gets out of a dangerous situation unharmed. he had a camera rolling when a sheet of ice flew off of a car and shattered his windshield. the driver said he was able to

highway. that is some kind of scare. allyson: i saw that yesterday. terrible. in los angeles, a hoverboard burst into flames with a man on board. the rider quickly jumped off. he then turned his camera onto the board, capturing the fire. the man says he's had the hoverboard for a few months. he says it cost $600, and the fire claimed it in about a minute. geoff: firefighters pulled a dog from an icy pond in utah. the owner lost control of the pup on monday when it chased after some ducks. the dog fell through the ice and couldn't get out. firefighters sprung into action and pulled the dog to safety. the dog was cold but is expected to be ok. the dog's owner sent this photo to the fire department showing their appreciation. that is a great shot. good to see they are doing ok. are you up for a good challege? allyson: mark zuckerberg has one for you to get things moving in the new year. the facebook founder is challenging himself and others to run 365 miles in 2016.

sounds like a crazy amount, its just one mile a day. last year, his challenge was to read a new book every two weeks. geoff: a lot of people will say they can't do that and walk that amount. the annual international consumer electronics show will officially open today in las vegas, but we've got a peak at what's to come. many items were on display yesterday. those included this wiggly, bendable product named pic. it's a flexible camera that wraps around your wrist. it can be straightened out to take that selfie. the show is open today through saturday. allyson: quote stuff. -- cool stuff. austria is taking a life-size [indiscernible] alone his collection is the back to the future delorean and the batmobile. plus, get this -- his cars are

40's today. the cold m mning and tomorrow gets a little better with afternoon temperatures back in the 50 range but chillier than normal. geoff: the national championship game is five days away. i know you are looking forward to that. clemson head coach dabo swinney had a lot of personal stories to share yesterday. allyson: one reporter asked him about his nickname dabo. this is what he had to say. >> i didn't even know my name was william until the third grade, especially with william christopher swinney. and i'm like, good, god. i have to remind myself how to spell my own name. they give the teacher the roll, so the roll that the teacher would have the first time they start computerizing all that stuff would have your birth name. it'd be like william christopher swinney and i'd be looking around like who's, hey, there's another swinney in here?
