we will talk about the rest of the week and what you can expect in just a few minutes. patrick: president barack obama has just one year left in office, but he says there is still a lot to do before he leaves. allyson: for the final time, president obama stood before a joint session of congress last night to deliver his state of the union speech. the president centered the speech around four points -- the economy, climate change, national security, and politics. president obama touched on domestic issues, like making college affordable and strengthening social security and medicare. he called on congress to take action on the fight against terror. and touted the state of the economy. >> anyone claiming that america's economy is in decline is peddling fiction. allyson: the president urged americans to engage in rational constructive debates to strengthen our nation. >> democracy grinds to a halt without a willingness to compromise, or when even basic facts are contested and we listen only to those who agree

allyson: president obama ended the speech with an optimistic tone, asking people to vote, speak out, and stand up for the weak and vulnerable. patrick: for the first time, a south carolinians gave the republican response. governor nikki haley delivered the republican response to the state of the union. the governor criticized president obama's record on the economy. >> tonight, president obama spoke eloquently about grand things. he is at his best when he does that. unfortunately, the president's record has often fallen far short of his soaring words. as he enters his final year in office, many americans are still feeling the squeeze of an economy too weak to raise income levels. patrick: the governor went on to imagine a white house in republican hands, vowing that major changes would be made. >> and as we usher in this new era, republicans will stand up for our beliefs. if we held the white house,

families and we'd put the brakes on runaway spendg and debt. we would encourage american innovation and success instead of demonizing them, so our economy would truly soar and good jobs would be available across our country. patrick: governor haley will appear live on the "today" show this morning. you can catch it right here starting at 7:00 a.m. allyson: south carolina's u.s. senators are weighing in the president's final state of the union. senators lindsey graham and tim scott has this to say. >> a majority of american's believe that our country is headed in the wrong direction. unfortunately, i believe they're right. and i heard nothing tonight to suggest that we're going to change course. at home, our economy is stagnate . abroad, our nation is very much at risk. i heard nothing from the president tonight to suggest that we're actually going to destroy isil and no change in economic policy. i fear 2016 will be a very dangerous year abroad and a challenging year here at home.

she didn't recognize. she almost didn't answer. on the other end, was barack obama. >> i wanted to know if i could use that slogan for my campaign, and i said, "senator, if you what those five words and if those 5 little words will help you, you can use those 5 words" and after that it was just on. patrick: childs said she had planned to just watch last night's address at home, and was overjoyed when she received the call from the white house inviting her to sit with the first lady. she got to attend the president's inauguration and receives a christmas card from the first family each year. allyson: the stage is set for another debate among the republicans for president. patrick: it'll happen tomorrow in north charleston. seven candidates are due on the main stage. donald trump, dr. ben carson, senators ted cruz and marco rubio, and governors chris christie, john kasich, and jeb bush. the other candidates will appear

the debate will happen at the north charleston coliseum and performing arts center tomorrow night, and you can watch it right here on wyff 4. following the republican debate, democrats will face off on sunday. that debate will also be in charleston. lester holt will moderate and you can watch here on wyff news 4 beginning at 9:00 p.m. on sunday. we'll have live coverage and reaction following the debate. allyson: in local headlines now, new details in the investigation into the death of a toddler in greenville county. the sheriff's office has charged michael latimer junior with homicide by child abuse he's the child's mother's boyfriend. the coroner has ruled the death of 26-month-old destiny jackson a homicide. he says the little girl was brought to the e.r. back on january 4 and she died monday. the corner says the cause of death was non-accidental head injury. patrick: greenvills police chief is responding to a threat made by a local community activist group to block woodruff

that group, fighting injustice together says excessive force , was used when police arrested 21-year-old jaquan williams last month. here's the dashcam video. he was arrested on a charge of possession of marijuana. the group says if they do not see positive action in the coming days, they will purposely disrupt woodruff road at an unspecified time. here is chief ken miller's response. >> it would be unlawful behavior to do that. and it would require -- promote, really direct conflict with , authorities, with police, and with the public. patrick: jaquan williams says he was slammed to the ground while in handcuffs and the excessive force caused him to lose a tooth. chief mimier says he was forced to the car, not slammed. allyson: the south carolina department of transportation is beginning its second largest project in state history this month. patrick: it's called the gateway project and will be at the

have that. the first phase of the gateway project is set to begin in late january. it is set to cost $231 million, the second largest for dot in the state ever. allyson: video here showing the plans fofothe interchange. it's scheduled to finish in the summer of 2019, and crews say the new design should cut down on traffic back-ups, >> the biggest benefit is we're going to have collector distributor routes that will parallel mainline 85 and also interstate 385. it'll separate the traffic that's merging and entering the interstate from that traffic that's going straight through. allyson: the dot says on average, nearly 200,000 vehicles pass through the interchange every day. to stay up-to-date on lane closures and construction details, the dot encourages

escaped from a prison in brazil. 46. this is the largest single prison break in the history of that area. the inmates escaped through a tunnel dug into the ground. officials said the tunnel measured 131 feet long. according to the military police, several inmates had been seen escaping by taxi or on foot. some left their uniforms thrown along the road hoping it would , prevent their being identified. seven of the escaped inmates were recaptured. the whereabouts of the others is not confirmed. housing allyson: yesterday marked six years since a devastating earthquake hit haiti. haitians gathered at prayer services to remember those who died. the 7.0 magnitude quake hit the haitian capital in 2010, leaving much of port-au-prince and surrounding areas in ruins. haiti's president placed a bouquet of white flowers at a mass burial site that's been turned into an official memorial for those killed. the government has said more than 300,000 people were killed, but the exact toll is unknown. the ceo of embattled volkswagen

officials in washington today to discuss a fix for vw's emissions scandal. on tuesday, the epa and california regulators rejected a recall proposal submitted by vw last month. officials said the proposal contained gaps and lacked sufficient detail and went further, issuing 13 violations. the scandal using software to cheat emission tests involves over a half million vehicles in the u.s., from model years 2009 to 2015. patrick: the flu is starting to make its way around the country. the cdc reports to states are reporting widespread flu activity, maryland and north carolina. cases of also increased somewhat in connecticut, iowa, massachusetts, new hampshire, pennsylvania, and virginia. experts say there is still time to get a flu shot if you have not already. flu season typically peaks around february. people across the country will
