it will not amount to a lot early sunday morning and late tomorrow night. more on that second. here is our first system, bringing us the moderate to heavy rain. most of us saw one inch of rain. there was also wet snow in the televisions mixed with -- the higher elevations mixed with rain. we could see isolated rain and snow showers overnight. otherwise the rest will just have cloudy skies. temperatures or did unto 33 in asheville. a rain-snow mix. here is late tomorrow night into sunday morning. it's not a strong system. it's very fast and. out of the mountain it is mainly rain showers. a couple snow showers could mix with the rain, especially along the i-85 corner arc. -- corridor. the system will be out of here by sunday afternoon.

grassy areas will most likely melt away. i will talk more about this from system later on. carol: happening now in spartanburg county, we're taking a live look at i-85 near mile marker 82. this is courtesy of the south jalandhar department of transportation. -- south carolina department of transportation. traffic has been backed up for several miles all the way to cherokee county since 2:00 this afternoon. an official with emergency management says a truck overturned carrying paint. they say traffic is still moving, but very slowly. stay with wyff news 4 both on and online for the latest on this developing story. michael: to commitment 2016 now. republican presidential candidate ted cruz was in the upstate tonight, rallying at north greenville university. the stop is part of his "cruzing to victory" swing through south carolina. a crowd of 1500 listened to the texas senator talk about preserving religious freedom, and also the right to bear arms. cruz got the biggest applause when he talked about career politicians. sen. cruz: they get in bed with the lobbyists and special

government, and we need to take power out of washington and back to we the people. that is what this campaign is all about. michael: cruz urged his supporters to get more involved in his campaign here in south carolina to make sure their neighbors get out and vote. cruz then left for stops tomorrow in fort mill and myrtle beach. carol: meanwhile, south carolina native and former presidential candidate lindsey graham is throwing his support behind jeb bush. today, graham made the announcement. the senator says it all comes down to national security. he believes jeb bush has the best plan to fight isis. the pair now is focused on doing well during the south carolina primary. sen. graham: so ladies and gentlemen, south carolina is going to reset this race. on february 20, we're going to give jeb bush the momentum that he needs and deserves to win the nomination. carol: right now in the latest nbc-wall street journal poll, bush is tied with chris christie in 5th place. trump continues to lead with

behind. michael: the democrats will debate in charleston sunday night. you can see it right here on wyff 4 live at 9:00. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o'malley are expected on the stage. nbc's lester holt and andrea mitchell will moderate. again that's at 9:00 p.m. sunday right here on wyff 4. carol: and some important dates for you here. the south carolina republican primary is saturday, february 20. followed by the democratic primary the following saturday, the 27th. in georgia both primaries are on tuesday, march 1. and in north carolina both primaries are on tuesday, march 15. michael: governor nikki haley has released her budget for this year, more than $7 billion worth. currently the state has more than $1 billion in reserve funds. and you may wonder how much of that will go to statewide flood relief and road repairir gov. haley: quit talking about it, let's put the money in there, let's start fixing the roads by priority and let's see the improvements that have happened.

to roads two or three years ago without raising taxes is just now going into effect. so you're just now seeing those orange cones. the 1,000 year flood did have a cost to it. that was expected, but as i said, we were going to try to cover it as much as we could so we didn't have to go to the feds. michael: governor haley says the two things she's most proud of are cutting her debt in half over the last 5 years and doubling the reserve funds. carol: south carolina attorney general alan wilson says the state will gain back more than $337,000 from food stamp fraud. a.g. wilson says 99 people in south carolina pleaded guilty to food stamp fraud in 2015. wilson says the money recovered is the result of a year-long operation looking into the use and abuse of supplemental nutrition assistance program, also known as snap. fraudulent use of snap benefits is a felony. about 855,000 south carolinians receive snap benefits. they can use them to buy unprepared food items like milk, meat, bread, beans, and rice to

michael: in greer, police have arrested a 17-year-old. tonight he stands accused of breaking into a high school. you see him here throwing trophies against the trophy cases. a greer police officer in greenville county school security guard responded to riverside high school around 2:30 this morning. police said found a shattered window leading into the library and a large rock inside the window. the teen was identified as 17-year-old james bravakis. the district said he is a senior at riverside high. he has been suspended tonight. trekking through the night. he is chargedith public drunkenness. carol: anderson police held a news conference this morning, homicide case that happened back in december. and they're asking for your help. the shooting happened on i-street on the night of december 23. police say 25-year-old michael mcgee was killed. his body was found in a barbershop behind the house.

two gunshot wounds to the chest. no arrests have been made. his family wants closure and justice. >> i just want anybody with any information, big or small. if you loved mike, you would come forward. if you saw anything or hear someone talking, please come forward. we want justice for mike. carol: investigators released a sketch this morning. anyone with information is asked to call crime stoppers at 1-888-crime-sc. michael: now to west africa, where suspected islamist fighters tonight attacked a hotel used by foreigners in burkina faso. al qaeda in the islamic maghreb claimed responsibility for the attack. video from the capital, ouagadougou, showed fire along a city street and security personnel swarming the area. the attackers set cars on fire as they went into the hotel. five hours later, commandos trying to free hostages used explosives to enter the building, starting another fire. the number of killed is uncertain.

upwards -- one estimate puts it upwards of 20. carol: in hawaii, a search is underway for 12 crew members who were on board two marine helicopters that crashed. the helicopters collided during a night time training mission . marine officials tell us each chopper had a crew of about 6 or more. they were all from the marine corps base on the islands. debris has been spotted in the water near hawaii's oahu island. there's no word on the s stus of the people onboard. michael: turns out it was not a mechanical problem after all. a navigation error is being blamed for putting american sailors into iranian waters. defense secretary ash carter says it's unclear if the crew made the mistake, or if navigational equipment is to blame. iranian forces detained the ten americans when their boats crossed into iranian territory in the persian gulf on tuesday. all 10 were released the next their fleet. carol: the cdc has imposed new travel guidelines for pregnant women. it's all because of the mosquito-bourne zika virus. that virus was found in fetal and newborn tissues of babies in

disorder microcephaly. there is currently no vaccine to block the virus and no medicine to treat it. early this week, it was confirmed in a person who had recently traveled to latin america. michael: a recall to tell you about. the pharmaceutical company perrigo has recalled cherry and grape flavored cough syrup, it's due to problems with the dosing cup. that could lead to an overdose. and while all of the defective syrups are off the shelves, amanda leeson with safekids upstate says this is actually a more common problem than most families realize. parents might use household things like a measuring teaspoon or a regular spoon to give their children medication. she says the dosing is not the same with a teaspoon from a dosing. -- dosing spoon. >> a regular tablespoon or teaspoon that you get out of the silverware drawer is probably going to measure too much medication as compared to an

spoon. a dosing cup traditionally will have a more accurate read. michael: leeson says the safest thing to do is use a dosing spoon like the one they provide at safekids upstate. and always watch your children for abnormal activity after any medication is given. [ringing] carol: the bell closed out a historically bad start to 2016 on wall street late this afternoon. the market was rattled by yet another tumble in the price of oil that hurt energy companies. the dow and the nasdaq both suffered triple digit drops. the s&p 500 index was also off more than 2%. this marks the worst two week start to a year of trading ever in the u.s. michael: walmart is going to close 269 stores around the wowod this year. two of those stores you are in our area. the neighborhood market store in pacolet and the gray court walmart are set to close. the walmart neighborhood market is set to close thursday january 28.

sign announcing the closure when they entered the store. the chain will close 154 locations in the u.s., mostly smaller stores like walmart express and neighborhood markets. shoppers in gray court say their store will be missed. >> i really hate it. it was bad news to me. it was so convenient. we just got the store. it was really bad news. i hate to hear that. >> is ridiculous. it's only been open a few months. now we have to drive to laurens or simpsonville. we don't have another grocery store. this was it for us. michael: walmart says the company looked at all its locations, analyzing financial performance and long term forecast before deciding which markets to close. carol: chipotle will reportedly close all of its stores next month for a food safety meeting, on february 8, nearly 2000 locations will close. employees can attend a companywide meeting. chipotle has been in the hot seat after being tied to a

including e. coli, salmonella, and nora virus. the cdc says 52 people have been sickened in several cities. -- 53 people. michael: on monday, the nation will celebrate the legacy of dr. martin luther king junior. today was the gala in downtown greenville. this was at the hyatt regency downtown. more than 400 people attending. the reverend jesse jackson spoke of dr. king's legacy and talk about the work left to do. rev. jackson: suffice to say that there is unfinished business. rican americans are 30% of this state and 7% of the prisoners. 75% of them do prison labor. the state gives them for dollars an hour. half goes to the jail cell, half

there is unfinished business. we are free but not equal. michael: today would have been martin luther king junior's 87th birthday. carol: and that was just one of the events the group rainbow push coalition of greenville has plplned for the long weekend. tomorrow a college fair with more than 20 historically black colleges and universities will take place at the peace center. the mlk celebration will wrap up on monday with a blood drive at the phillis wheatley c cter. and in anderson county, tomorrow the african american leadership council of united way will host it's tenth annual mlk day of service. it is a way to honor the life and legacy of dr. martin luther king junior. michael: coming up, overnight multimillionaires. our first look at one of the winners in a billion dollar jackpot drawing. how they first reacted to the news. carol: the self-driving car technology is front and center at the detroit auto show. we've got a look at what the future holds for autonomous cars.

carol: the first of the 3 winners of this week's record breaking powerball jackpot have come forward. and they're surprising everyone with their plans. john robinson and his wife lisa showed up at tennessee lotty headquarters today to claim their share of the $1.6 billion jackpot. earlier today the couple appeared on "the today show." the couple is having a hard time believing their luck. >> i looked again, they are the same, i looked again, and the third time i said john, john, you have to check these numbers. >> so i checked them 4 times and i said, i'll believe it when the news comes on in the morning and they say hey there's a winner been in munford.

use the money to pay off their mortgage and their daughter's student loans. and then they plan to go back to work. the other two tickets were sold in florida and california. those winners have not come forward yet. michael: big smiles there. so for cars are no longer a thing of science fiction. they're being displayed front and center at the detroit auto show. and could soon be on the streets with you. volvo and mercedes both have semi-autonomous cars planned to be on the road in 2017. the cars can speed up and slow down, steer and brake all on their own. carol: did you see the beautiful rainbows over the upstate today? this is not exaggerating the color. those are very intense. visits from caitlin baker. this is a shot of her neighborhood. michael: thank you.. and thank you daniel cassels for this one. some say this is photoshop, but she says no this is not.

carolina. that will continue through most of the night tonight. don't expect much in the way of accumulation. maybe another dusting possible. carolina line. flurries certainly possible overnight. pretty impressive. moderate to it times very heavy rainfall. 1.5 inch in downtown greenville. an inch in anderson. almost 1.25 inches at the asheville regional airport. our new camera in downtown greenville. pretty nice outside. a couple of sprinkles around the area with the cloudy skies. current temperature 48 in greenville. 32 in asheville. 38 in hendersonville. 38 in franklin. the higher elevations and valleys could see a few flakes mixed with sprinkles. northeastern georgia, 47 in dakoa. 45 in alberton.

steady in the 40's. we might get down to low 40's. 50 the warm spot in abbeville. 45 in gaffney. 45 in pickens. pretty chilly temperatures outside. with the northeasterly breeze today, that developed with that wedge, wind chills in the 30's. it was rough. winds have shifted out of the southwest at 10-15 miles per hour. making a chili with the windchill. -- it chilly with the windchill. the winds are winds, it's still going to get you chilly. 48 in greenville. 60 in orlando. 66 in miami. the storm system from today moving up tomorrow morning. here is our next focal point. from system in texas dives down into the gulf. this is tomorrow night at 6:00. it moves quickly across the gulf. most of the energy lies to the south. we could see some rain-snow by sunday afternoon.

some of the grassy areas -- a dusting to an inch in some of the grassy areas of the mountain. in the upstate, it may mix with a couple of snowflakes, but that's about it. no travel problems. by the afternoon hours, sunshine will melt away whatever snow was on the ground. mostly cloudy skies. partial clearing tonight. low of 43 for the overnight. for the mountains, partly sunny skies. in the greenville-anderson-spartanburg area, not too bad. a mix of sun and clouds. we want to 43 degrees at lunchtime. four day plus, brief rain-snow showers possible early sunday morning and late tomorrow night. then sunshine in the afternoon for the carolina panthers game. at least some sunshine. then it gets much colder early next week.

a rematch in the divisional round from a year ago, this time it's on the east coast. some news and notes to pass along, marshawn lynch is expected to play sunday for the seahawks. ron rivera said today ted ginn jr. did not practice, but is expected to play sunday. and running back jonathan stewart should be as close to 100% as he can be. but just like in last year's game in seattle, all eyes are on these two quarterbacks. russell wilson has guided the seahawks to a pair of super bowls, and cam newton is likely this year's nfl nbp. -- nfl mvp. newton has been in the playoffs in back to back years with the panthers, and says he will rely on that experience sunday. cam: i am looking for this to be a numerous game of the playoffs. but my record is not where i want it to be. we are excited for the opportunity that we do have. we felix truly competent in each

season. the tigers coming off the impressive win over sixth-ranked duke at the well. the tigers have never one three straight against top 25 teams. and a win this weekend would do just that. 4 straight wins has given this team confidence, and as head coach brad brownell says, that's what has his guys excited to welcome 8th ranked miami. >> i think now our guys are little bit more confidence and comfortable. avery's work confident -- avery is more comfortable in our system. we are scoring more. i think confidence is high. brad: miami has won 8 of its last 9. virginia, a team ranked inside the top 20. the game tips at 2:00 tomorrow afternoon. at halftime of the clemson miami game tomorrow, the football team will be honored on the court. the tigers are back from a trip to the national championship, and the community will have an opportunity one more time to

2015 team. the gamecock basketball program finally showed it was human wednesday night. south carolina lost for the first time this season, and have what i start it has been for frank martin. they have a chance to win again tomorrow. the ball goes in the air tomorrow afternoon at 1:00. . their men and women's team combined for one of the best starts ever in college basketball. a lot of fun down there. that looks like a ncaa tournament team. they still have 5, 6, 67 wins left to go. carol: a final check of the weather after the break. marco rubio. he ran for senate saying he opposed amnesty... then he flipped, and worked with liberal chuck schumer to co-author the path to citizenship bill.
