announcer: live, local, breaking news. this is wyff news 4 today in hd. geoff: we are following breaking news this morning. at least 19 people were killed in an attack at a university in pakistan. several others were wounded. police say the attack was shortly after classes it began. nobody has claimed responsibility for the attack. allyson: also happening today. an upstate deputy shot in the head on the job is expected to be released from the hospital this morning. geoff: also in the morning's headlines. the coast guard calls off the search for 12 missing marines off hawaii's coast. one was from the upstate. allyson: in oconee county, five house fires in seven days. what the county fire department is doing to prevent more fires. geoff: good morning. i'm geoff hart. allyson: and i'm allyson powell good morning. it is a cold morning, dale. dale: we are seeing a few

we will see more of the action around noon. we will see a few flurries in the upstate this afternoon. we are not expecting accumulation for the upstate, the mountains could see one to three inches of snow with the higher elevations getting the most. there is light snow falling in parts of tennessee and north carolina. if you are traveling past knoxville toward nashville, you will run into it. the county is highlighted in a plum color are under a winter weather advisory. the mountains of georgia are expecting three inches of snow or more. this will be a late morning-late afternoon event. 22 in asheville. 30 in greenville. upper 30's in the piedmont. we have light breezes, but it is cold. we will show you the future plus

i'm about noon to 1:00 in the mountains. and then after 1:00 in the upstate until around 3:30 we will see flurries and snow that will continue into the mountains for the evening. it will not be a big event for the upstate. the mountains will see enough accumulation to make it slippery. rains will arrive thursday, which will be on the increase friday. we get a little bit of snow today and have a lot of rain by friday. geoff: thank you, dale. there are some school closings this morning. graham county, jackson county and swain county schools are all closed today. they all have an optional workday today. road crews in both carolinas and georgia are preparing for the potential incoming weather system. allyson: possible snow accumulation and black ice are some of the possible problems that the system can bring.

greenwood county will be closed, according to the assistant superintendent. break. the water main break happened in the town of 96. geoff: south carolina governor nikki haley will give her state of the -- will give her state address tonight. this is video from her address last year where she proposed cutting the state income tax and raising the gas tax to fix the roads. live. wyff4.com our coverage begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. allyson: new details in the case of an upstate deputy who was shot in the head while on the job. greenville county deputy dave dempsey is expected to be released from the hospital today. that is according to the greenville county sheriff's office. as you may recall, dempsey was shot back in december while responding to a robbery. geoff: the coast guard has suspended the search for 12 missing marines off hawaii's coast.

sempler from woodruff is one of the 12. officials say two helicopters collided during a training exercise last thursday. four life rafts were found from the helicopters. no one was on board the rafts. at this time, we still don't know why the two military helicopters collided. allyson: it has been eight days since greer high school basketball standout nathan moore died. the cause still unknown. nathan became ill just a week ago and died during his sleep monday night. tracey moore remembers her son nathan as a mischievous, yet charming little boy. she says nathan brought spirit on and off the basketball court. >> i want everyone to take from this how special it is to spend time with your family and not take each other for granted. i don't want nathan to ever be forgotten. allyson: again, the cause of death has yet to be released. geoff: a woman is dead, following a house fire in pickens. sky 4 was quickly over the scene this afternoon. you can see smoke pouring out of the home on ann street. this is just blocks from main street.

a witness on scene says she saw a small fire and then heard a loud boom. the coroner says she won't release the woman's name until the autopsy is performed today. she also says several pets were also killed in the fire. in oconee county, five fires in seven days at homes without smoke detectors. the county fire chief charlie king says most of them started from people simply trying to stay warm. yesterday the department bought new smoke detectors to give to people in need. and the chief says the department already has a long list. >> any day you can call our office and we are willing to come out and check yours or install a new one. geoff: there was a fire on forest drive in seneca on saturday. a smoke detector might have saved the family living inside. the owner's 16-year-old granddaughter smelled the smoke and got everyone out before the detectors even went off. on january 30, oconee county is

go door to door in areas hit by recent fires, trying to make sure everyone has a working smoke detector. allyson: have you heard this one? everyone is excited. there is the announcement of the first cheesecake factory in south carolina. geoff: haywood mall said in a statement that the restaurant will open this summer. the cheesecake factory has more than 180 locations nationwide. it will open in the former panera bread location in haywood mall, next to macy's. hello? here come the crowds! it will be great for them. alright, dale? dale: it is cold this morning and we see a few light flurries in the mountains. that will pick up around lunchtime today. for the upstate, it may be around the time the kids get out of school.

skycams, it is cold and cloudy. 30 as we look out from paris mountain towards greenville. 22 in asheville. mostly cloudy there. we can look with the live super doppler 5 -- super doppler 4hd, and we think we can see freezing rain in parts of tennessee. there will be possible slippery driving conditions near knoxville. this is a winter weather watch near western north carolina. this is why several schools are closed today. 1-3 inches of snow could cause problems. the mountains of georgia are under a winter storm warning. it will begin this afternoon into the afternoon in the mountains. we will see a flurry in the upstate today, that no accumulation expected. 29 in anderson. 28 in spartanburg and laurens.

21 in marshall. it is pretty cold all across the area. it is not as cold as yesterday and the winds are lighter. here is the computer model. we have clouds this morning and then around 1:00 we start to see snow in northeastern georgia and western north carolina. that will come down pretty good with 1-3 inches possible. then, it comes to an end. tomorrow, rain will begin later in the afternoon. friday. they could be a wintry mix in the mountains on friday. it looks like it will basically be a rain even for the upstate. early friday morning is when we will see some wintry mixes and some heavier rain expected. the next 12 hours will see temperatures struggling to reach the upper 30's for the upstate. the mountains will be kept cool

a group of campaign volunteers got in a car accident in iowa because of icy roads. the campaign says braden joplin died. he was 25-year-old. the other three people involved have been released from the hospital. the campaign has suspended the events for today. doctor ben carson released the following statement. a presidential candidate asks a lot of his or her volunteers. working the long hours in the cold, they are underappreciated. they are the unsung heroes of the political process. a human rights campaign has endorsed hillary clinton's presidential bid. her fight is our fight. those are words from the nation's largest lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender rights advocacy organization. the organization said, she has stood with us and now it's our turn. a live look now at indianapolis, indiana. snowy roads there. as of now, we have no accumulation. dale: it will be early afternoon that we have to watch out for.

this afternoon, we will see some flurries of snow and temperatures will be kept cold in the 30's. the western north carolina area will see mid 30's at best for afternoon highs today. looking ahead, tomorrow has low to mid 40's for highs with a good chance of rain in the afternoon. there is a 100% chance of rain on friday. saturday morning could bring a wintry mix in the mountains. the upstate clears up for saturday and has temperatures back to normal on sunday. allyson: the mother of trayvon martin sybrina fulton spoke to a crowd of students and faculty at clemson university. geoff: trayvon martin was a 17-year-old unarmed teenager shot and killed by george zimmerman in february of 2012. sybrina was introduced by the president of the university james clements. more than 200 people were there. she was emotional at times

we have expanded the winter weather advisory to include madison and transylvania counties. that means it will get slippery as the snow starts to fall late morning into the afternoon in the mountains. we will see some flurries of snow in the upstate for the trip home from school. we have mid 30's to upper 30's for the upstate today. piedmont may hit 40 degrees. we have flurries in the mountains and 36 degrees today is the afternoon high. it will be coming down pretty good and western north carolina from 1:00 through 3:00. that is what is going on. we have a little bit of snow excitement and then a lot of rain thursday night into friday. geoff: when my son jack gets excited, he repeats he says, dad, dad, dad! we are going to have snow!
