today is you do fall outside and it goes downhill tonight when the moisture moves in effect, meaning it is imminent for cherokee, union, greenville, northeast georgia, and all of north carolina. this will be a significant storm. it will be a matter of if it is more ice or snow. this starts at 6:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, so here is the snowfall in the mountains. some models show the snow creeping down. if we start with snow, we will see pros and this a petition, but if we start with rain, it is hard to cool the temperature down. if that is the case, more ice and less snow. more frozen precipitation and freezing rain across i-85 asked with snow. that continues to beget noontime and the bulk of the moisture pulls out of the area and we start to see snow because cold air rushes in.

saturday into the week hours of saturday morning, we could see snowfall on top of the ice. one of the models showing? one of them showing about half an inch of ice and the gsf showed cap that about a quarter of that. gsf model now showing spartanburg will have almost eight inches and nine inches and one model showing about five inches. the gsf thinks it will be more snow. i will figure out which one it will be and i will show you details. allyson: thank you. the storm might not have started yet but the storm preps have. wyff news 4's aly myles has been in asheville since 5:00 this morning. aly, what are crews doing out there to prepare? aly: happy this is the calm thursday. before the storm and they are getting prepped. you can see how much of the sand

there are multiple ones around asheville and you can see where they are filling up these huge tanks. they can fill this up within minutes. this is just one of the things they are doing, 12 hours on 12 , hours off until this storm is over. hundreds of tons of salt and sand-all ready to go as soon as the flakes start falling. >> the guys are going over and checking all the equipment, make sure there's no broke or faulty stuff, checking all the lights and loading salt and sand and just standing by, checking for icy spots. aly: the good news for this storm, this 32 degree weather and sun. >> anytime we get warm weather, it thaws the roads out and the asphalt helps heat it up, and then it 'aint as bad as if it stayed in the teens or zero. that way, when it first starts out, it melts as it lays in the roads. aly: still, these guys know it'll be a long couple of days. they've already transitioned into 12 hour shifts, all hands on deck.

brine. the strong weekend storm is predicted to bring heavy snow across more than 14 states, with dangerous blizzard conditions developing over parts of the baltimore and washington, d.c. metropolitan areas. jim cantore has this report on the problems there and what could happen in the coming days. jim: well, if last night was any precursor to what is to come, then we are in big trouble in washington, d.c. only 7/10 of an inch of snow but , look at the headaches it caused in and around the district. we had accidents everywhere. 150 reported by the police department. with traffic locked up everywhere, even major interstates, with less than an inch of snow. there are so many aspects of this storm. it just boggles the mind. we have major ice possible for char places like birmingham, atlanta, memphis. they all have a chance at snow eventually as the colder part of the storm moves overhead. and then there is the crippling snow which we have had such a

about over virginia, west virginia, maryland, delaware, southern pennsylvania over the last several days. and now it looks like these twenty to thirty inch snow fall amounts should actually happen. this will be the potential to shut down washington, d.c. starting friday night. back to you. allyson: even the president of the united states isn't immune from the headache brought by driving in snowy weather. the president rode in a motorcade from joint base andrews to the white house last night. usually, traffic is cleared out for a president, but that couldn't be done on this snowy night in d.c. so a drive that normally takes 25 minutes took about an hour and ten minutes. the president arrived at the white house safely. local doctors are warning that the elderly and young are most at risk for injuries with the weather on the way. at greenville memorial hospital, they're expecting to see injuries from slips, falls, sledding and frost bite but are most worried about hypothermia. doctors say to make sure you

announcer: you are watching live, local breaking news with geoff hart, meteorologist daleallyson: the snow boarder at the center of an online video sensation could be facing criminal charges after he was caught on tape triggering an avalanche. 29-year-old christian michael mares was wearing a personal video camera friday when he boarded down a steep run at sugar bowl resort in california. the video shows mares being buried under the cascading snow of the avalanche, fighting his way to the surface. sugar bowl said wednesday that mares was in a very active avalanche area, which has been closed to the public since 2010. it said mares triggered the avalanche, and put himself, his friends, ski patrol and the

more than 181,000 bottles of water for the residents of flint, michigan, have arrived courtesy of pop icon cher. pallets of water arrived at the food bank of eastern michigan wednesday morning. the donation will go to community centers, food banks and fire houses, and it will focus on low income housing areas. in 2014, the cash strapped city switched their water supply to save money. since that time, the water supply has had very high levels of lead and other contaminants. the widow, of poisoned former russian spy alexander litvinenko, says she is relieved with the verdict of a british public inquiry into his death. now, she is urging the british government to take steps against russian agents operating inside britain. marina litvinenko spoke outside the high court in london today. a judge said today, he is certain that alexander was given tea laced with a fatal dose of polonium-210 at a london hotel in november 2006. he said there is a strong

killing. a special election will be held this spring to fill the senate seat left open by the late billy o'dell. he served district 4, which includes abbeville, anderson and greenwood counties. so far, williamston town councilman rockey burgess and state representative mike gambrell have announced they are running for the open seat. the anderson independent mail also reports that willie day, anderson's former neighborhood and transit director, is running. the primary will be on march 22. run-off elections would be held april 5, if necessary. the special election will be on may 17. some upstate parents will hold a meeting tonight, to talk about the idea of closing an elementary school. district officials in pickens county say hagood elementary is operating at 48% capacity. there's a proposal to close it and send its 300 students to other pickens-area elementary schools, which are also under capacity. a pto meeting will be held at

five miles per 10 miles south, a cold rain. that is how harsh that line will be. asheville looking at one foot of snow, if not more. you are at 40 degrees. from our champion hills skycam, you can see snow already on the ground and waiting or more. a lot will be in hendersonville where six inches will be possible. winter storm warnings above by-85 in the upstate, georgia and all of north carolina under the winter storm warning. live super doppler 4 hd drying out. look at the rain on the model. it is already almost to augusta. the rain is moving in earlier. that is important because it is five hours or six hours earlier than the models trended. it will arrive overnight, cold atmosphere and we could wake up to precipitation already frozen until waiting for it to happen. let me show you the trend.

this is about three hours to five hours earlier than it showed about 12 hours ago. that will continue to trend as a given to around 8:00 with an icy nexen sleet, and freezing rain. that will continue around the morning hours and peak around lunchtime. heavy stuff in the afternoon hours and i say to stuff because it will have freezing rain, sleet, and a snow. could stretch as far south as abbeville, but likely areas north the by-85 seen the worst. the frozen stuff moves out and the snow moves and because temperatures: did the evening as low transitions to the coast and all the energy shifts as well. we will seek snow showers until around midnight in the upstate and until early saturday morning for the mountains. if this trends earlier, it may shut off earlier, as well. let me show you this model, we are campaign -- comparing the

one shows half an inch of ice and the gsf shows maybe one tend to 2/10 of an inch of ice. the gfs shows one foot of snowfall for gsp and the other shows about four inches to five inches. one thinks there will be more eyes and the gfs thinks there will be more snow. the national weather service and thus are tracking possibly this gfs and it could be a trend. i don't know if we will see one foot, but somewhere in the middle. they have gotten it right that precipitation is moving in earlier and that is a trend we will watch in the mountains. both models the green that we will see almost one foot of snow fall for the asheville and hendersonville area. i latest expectation, half an inch of ice, one inch to three inches of snow. if we see less ice, tack on more snow because it uses more moisture to create i spent snow. four inches to six inches plus in the mountains with nearly one foot of snow in the north

right around at night. it will continue into the overnight hours, especially getting bad in the upstate by tomorrow at lunch time and really by friday night with extreme impacts. the four-day plus shows us 100% chance of a wintry mess tomorrow, high of 32 on saturday, cold, high of 41 and likely not much melting. sunday we start to see the sunshine and we will get some melting with the re-freeze and it is likely roads will be bad monday morning as well. allyson: thank you. here's a unique view of the northern lights taken from above the earth. astronauts scott kelly and tim peake shared online their view of the aurora borealis from the international space station. the natural light display happens when a burst of the sun's gas and magnetic field causes a solar wind, which is the stream of energy specks from the sun. you can see the polar lights from the ground, but it's a very different view than what the astronauts witnessed. peake called their view of the aurora magical. chris: it is peter paul.

the dow jones, nasdaq and s&p 500 all up. those numbers on wall street, just hours after a dramatic drop pushed the stock market to its , lowest level in nearly two years wednesday. the dow jones industrial average was down more than 500 points at one point during the day. the plunge was tied to a steep drop in crude oil prices, which sank 7%. the price of u.s. crude dropped below $27 a barrel the lowest price since may 2003. that drop is blamed on a global glut of supply. 2015 proved to be the comeback year for toys. the toy industry had an incredible year, delivering its most robust growth figures in more than a decade. that's according to new data released which finds u.s. toy sales jumped nearly 7% in 2015 to $19.4 billion, with help from "star wars" and "teenage mutant ninja turtles" figurines. toys inspired by movies even outperformed the market growing by nearly 9.5%. wendy's is testing a new black bean burger.
