we will be with him in a minute, but first let's check on chris justus. chris: it is a mess out there. if you live north of the i-85 6:00. conditions are rapidly deteriorating. the have snowfall mixed in with sleet north of the i-85. basicallllright along the wade hampton boulevard down to the i-85 it isis wintry mix. back toward pickens, there is heavy snowfall right now. asheville and hendersonville also has heavy snowfall. the sleet and snow will change over to freezing rain. at 33 degrees you can have snow, but what will happen is this temperature will drop to 32 degrees. warmer air will come into the middle of the atmosphere. that makes the snow freezing rain. what ever have on the ground

spartanburg has heavy snowfall right now. asheville looks like a winter wonderland. we still have rainfall right now. the latest model is showing that snow line moving south. it will change to freezing rain between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. if the transition is later, you will get more snow. the bottom is snow, the middle is the ice, and later on tonight there will be more snow. needless to say, what ever you get it will be a mess from anderson northbound. this area south of greenville is the area of uncertainty. that freezing line may make it as far south as greenwood or it may make it as far north as the i-85. you need to be on guard because you could d impacted later on today. the later afternoon hours look and 10 you to see heavy freezing rain.

he moved up to travelers rest and he was looking at three inches. it all depends on where you are this morning. you do not want to be out on the roads this morning. it is nasty and treacherous. back to you, i am coming back inside. allyson: quite a difference rum what we see here and in spartanburg county and what aly myles is seeing in clemson. she has more of a rainy situation there. aly: good morning. we are here in downtown clemson. we have 76 right behind me. rain is falling steadily behind me. it is 36 degrees on the car thermometer. the car is driving at a normal speed. we have driven from greenville to clemson today and only dealt with hydroplaning. as i said earlier, if those temperatures do fall below freezing, he will need to be concerned about black ice. i am sure you heard from cory at

you will hear from mike. there are worse areas in the carolinas, but as chris was saying, they do expected to move south into this area eventually. the careful on your commute and usual. allyson: we are looking outside at our wofford skycam. conditions are different in spartanburg. i see the most ice on the road there and a total of six accidents the between mile marker 60 and 64. mike mccormick has more about the conditions. mike: this is the look going toward the city of spartanburg. the road is slushy. you can see the lines people have made to drive in. we see a mix of different driving styles. some people go in way too fast, sending the slush into the air.

have also seen people outdoing spins to have a good time. that is not a good idea because there are clearly many people who have to be outside. we see trucks and a saw someone pulling a trailer. if you do have to get on the road, keep that in mind. there are some people flying around. the careful. i want to show you the accumulation in spartanburg. if you look at the ground, you can see where my boot thinks -- were my boot sinks in. definitely. the city pretreated them yesterday and i think that helped. right now, we have got a snow and sleet mix coming down in spartanburg. stay home if you can. yourself extra time. there is accumulation on the roads already here in

that was one massive snowball. apparently our signal said, we have had enough on that one. as we have been talking with chris, he has been making the point over and overr again that conditions continue to change and starting between 7:00 and 10:00 it will get much worse. chris: you will see everything today. you will see snow, ice, rain, freezing rain, and sleet. you can see in just the past five minutes, that snow line has shot down two areas like mauldin inne. spartanburg and cherokee county and then down through pickens and through northeast georgia to raven county. collapses right here. couple more hours of this sleet

between 7:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. this snow and sleet will change to freezing rain. for some of us, that will not happen. the northern part of the upstate will see this. these areas will eventually change back over to freezing rain. you will get an oreo of snow and then ice, and then snow later on this evening. pickens county has a summit snow. the snow line collapses in the last frame. seneca will see some snow soon. clayton is looking at snowowight now. we have torrential downpours of heavy snow in the asheville-hendersonville area. back to were jackson and haywood county we see very heavy snowfall right now. it is a wintry wonderland. it is right around freezing in the upstate. temperatures are interesting. you can have snow above freezing

will cool to 32 degrees but higher up in the atmosphere warmer air moves in. that will transition many of us to ice and that is the concern because roads can be treacherous. you can see snow in spartanburg there. we have a live look from asheville. we have had several inches of snow. anderson still has rain at 35 degrees. that wintry weather will continue to creep on down south to areas like anderson and northern laurens countnt areas right here on the bubble. you can see all or nothing in these areas. you are under the winter storm warning, but it may not make it as far south as your area. we will continue to keep you posted. geoff: thank you, chris. i took this picture when i arrived this morning. that is our parking lot outside. there is sleet on the news 4 vehicle.

announcer: now, your live super doppler 4 hd weather forecast. chris: a major winter storm is taking shape. we see snow in many locations and it is moving south. we likely will see several hours of snow and sleet. you see white on the board in downtown greenville, that much of that is sleet. that is bad because it will continue to code everything and is more icy. later on warmer air will move in in the middle part of the atmosphere and that will change sleet and snow into freezing rain. now. in spartanburg it is along the border, moving down the i-85 to greenville. it is pretty much all snow from tigerville and travelers rest

in pickens county we have heavy sleet and us know clemson is right on the border. we have snow 5-15 miles north. the closer you moved to dickens, basically. and clemson right now you have heavy rainfall. that line will continue to try and move and fill in these areas. you can see it trying to move in to west pelzer right there. in the mountains we have very heavy snowfall from asheville to hendersonville. this will continue all day with nothing but fluffy white snow. it is 29 in asheville and 33 in greenville. this is likely our high for the day in many areas. it will continue to get colder on the surface. in spartanburg from our skycam, we have a lot of snow. in nashville, a lot of snow as well. in anderson it is all rain it right now. this continues to be an ever

the model is doing a nice job of pinpointing this system. northern anderson county and clemson is right on the border throughout the entire day. anderson will eventually see it in the northern part of the county. these areas and the southern part of the upstate are on the bubble. nonetheless, most of the upstate is under the gun for substantial winter weather. that freezing rain will take over by midmorning. it will continue throughout most of the day, coating everything with ice. by tonight it cools down again and the upper parts of the atmosphere and we get snow. it is like a sandwich of snow, ice, and then snow again. it will come to an end shortly before 11:00. etreats to th have .25-.50 inches of ice. that could total one to four

we have 15 inches or more in the high country. allyson: continue to check our wyff 4 app. we have full forecasts, the interactive radar, closings, and delays. stay up to date with the latest alerts all at your fingertips. geoff: anderson and spartanburg and greenville county are starting to see power outages. from the mid-atlantic to new england, towns and cities are getting ready for a blockbuster. this is a look from maryland one of the many places that could get buried by feet of snow. allyson: our nation's capital is bracing for the blizzard. washington dc is under a warning, expecting some two feet of snow it's the first big snow storm of the season and it's going to be a doozy for millions of americans. geoff: this was also the scene in d.c. after just one or two inches. cars abandoned along the highway. we see some of that on the i-26 in asheville this morning. that situation is about to get much worse. allyson: in charlotte, the winter storm has already caused havoc in the air. americans airlines has cancelled all flights today in and out of

airline officials say about 650 flights and thousands of passengers will be impacted. flights scheduled for late last night were all cancelled. airport officials say they expect other airlines to cancel all of their flights today as well. geoff: crews have been watching the roads in greenville county very closely throughout the night, knowing conditions can vary from the northern to southern end. the state activated its snow and ice plan, loading sold brine trucks and pre-treating the interstate and major roads. and travelers rest, the fire and rescue department doubled up manpower overnight. twice the number of engines can move, if needed. snow chains are just part of the team's winter storm prep, which also includes extra precaution after close calls during previous winter storms. >> we've had several, we've been on the scene of a wreck on icy roads.

we have to watch out for our own safety. geoff: greenville county managers say their top priority today will be keeping county square clear. that way, ems crews can move in and out to emergencies. although your pets have fur, they are not immune to this cold. they can suffer from frostbite and hypothermia just like we can. it is best to bring them inside when we have these conditions. the cold can also affect a pet's mood. pet experts say animals that don't get enough exercise when it's cold may become irritable and anxious. veterinarians suggest opening up the blinds and turning on indoor lights to help pets conquer winter blues. allyson: don't forget, despite all of this the carolina panthers are scheduled to play this weekend. here's a quick update on wh the panthers expecd conditions to be like sunday after this storm passes. crews have been preparing the field for the games. panthers officials say the tarps are expected to stay on the ground until sometime saturday

chris: a wintry mess taking shape along i-85 and northbound with snow, sleet, and freezing rain. it will change over to all racing rain for many of us in the upstate, creating a slushy and frozen mess. it is trying to create further south. it is trying to go right along 26 back toward fountain inn on 385, mauldin, simpsonville seen eight snow and sleet mix. in travelers rest, heavy snow and getting it hard right now. it will continue to be a big situation throughout the day and we see likely a significant ice storm across the upstate. i think that is that big concern. we have a lot of snow in some areas, but it will transition to ice for some of us.
