here's a look from wofford. snow on the ground in spartanburg. freezing. we're continuing to see cold east-northeast. here's the view from our anderson skycam. we've got rain right now, 35 degrees. too warm for that wintry precipitation there. getting some early snow totals in here. we've got some pretty hefty totals, especially in the mountains. asheville airport, three inches. i can tell you, as we look at live super doppler 4 h.d., as we looooat what's going on, we have snow n mountains. some ice showing up across the upstate from the northern part of the upstate, from i-85 northbound. here is i-85. you need to pay attention to that, because anywhere north of there seeing the worst of the storm. we a bubble of uncertainty from greenwood to anderson. i don't want to you let your guard down there, because this rain freezing line is going to waffle back and forth.
7:02 am
this low level jet here sending in a ton of moisture from the south, at the same time, cold air is diving in. they meet right over our area. that's why this snow is turning to pink. you've got combating forces. this is warm air moving up from the south, but the same time, you've got stronger, more dense, cold air moving in. you can see all this heavy precip back toward atlanta is going to move right over our area like a fire hose. and as it falls, it's going to fall as ice. we can deal with the snow, but we cannot deal with the ice. it's going to be a lot from the i-95 corridor northbound. you can see the green in away. that means the freezing rain is taking over the rain in spartanburg. in greenville county, look at there. it's eroding a ay. 27 , pleasantburg, just north of greenville. we've got rain, but now changing to freezing rain. this is going to be a significant ice storm back up
7:03 am
a major snow to remember for the north carolina mountains, and we're still seeing snow and ice back toward the pickens and akoni county area. i'll continue to keep you posted. allyson: just in right now, i-40 eastbound, near newtown road, a disabled tractor-trailer blocking the road. eastbound lanes are closed there in hayes county. geoff: and let's get to asheville, where corey davis is bringing us the latest conditions from there. corey? corey: definitely, we have been trying to battle this winter storm, and we haven't really been winning this battle. the weather has been fairly unfor giving at the moment. it closed up a little bit. the wind isn't as strong as it was even a few minutes ago, 10 minutes ago, starting to pick up actually right now. i want to show you some of the conditions out here. it's pretty beat in some yares. you can see my footprints here as i walk out closer to the road.
7:04 am
up here at the street light. there is an ice i can i will hanging from the light there. snow that's coming down in the area, too, right there in front of the lights. overall, the conditions have been changing, but the wind has been an issue out here. it doesn't seem like it's been good situation right anyway, the winds are just making it a little too yucky in this area. so we will continue to bring you the latest here live in asheville. corey davis, wyff news 4. allyson: duke energy also reporting outages, nearly 3,000, the majority in macon county. geoff: let's turn to spartanburg county, where mike mccormick is giving us the latest on the conditions. allyson: yeah, blue ridge electric, they're working to get power back. in the utility reports 519 in pickens county without power.
7:05 am
call 1- 8 -blue-ridge. geoff: the latest information there, power outages over the last hour or so. let's get to mike mccormick, checking on the conditions that are changing oh so quickly. mike: : 're on the west side of spartanburg here, and the rain is continuing to come down pretty hard with some sleet mixed in. i want to show you the tree that i'm standing next to here. you can see the ice building up on the tree already. it's a little bit wet just because we're getting a lot of rain, but there are definite icicles here that are not come off the tree. that's obviously the concern as the ice continues to build up on these tree limbs, and then that's where the power outage concern comes for sure. and the problem is we're continuing to see this rain, and it's hitting the tree branches, and then freezing ultimately. what it's doing to the roads here behind us, this is blackstock road behind me. this is turning it into slush. and there's a lot of slush on the roads.
7:06 am
so if you do have to get o`t, you're going to want to take it slow and be careful. we heard people having a hard time getting traction as they drive here on the west side of spartanburg. we have seen the plows out and about, so they are doing the best they can to keep the roads clear, but there's nonstop rain and sleet, so it's definitely not helping things here on the west side of spartanburg. back to you guys. geoff: all right, mike, thank you. allyson: aly myles is in anderson county, joining us live. aly? aly: good morning, everyone. happy friday to you. hopefully you're get to come stay inside. but as you can see, we're here in downtown clemson, a much different scene than what corey and mike have been showing enthuse morning. it has been a consistent 36 degrees since we got out here, about 4:00 this morning. that's according to the car thermometer. as you can see, traffic free throw free throwing freely right now. roads very, very wet.
7:07 am
here this morning, but that was pretty easy drive, especially after driving to the station. that's where i dealt with a lot of ice, had to clear off my car, had to used ice scraper. nothing sticking to the windows here. trees, definitely nicer weather than what you're seeing in other parts of the carolinas. we'll take you back to the studio now, if they more information there. aly myles, wyff news 4, live in clemson. allyson: road conditions not good. you're taking a look at i-26 in asheville. you. eastbound lanes closed at new found roaoa disabled tractor-trailer. we're seeing many disabled vehicles all up and down i-26. icy roads and cars not ready for these conditions. if you don't have to get out on the roadways, stay inside. geoff: we've had this freezing rain, and the issue right now is temperatures continue to fall. chris: at the same time, you
7:08 am
cold air moving in from charlotte, warm air and moisture movg in from atlanta, so it's meeting right over our area. it's goingng to fall as ice. that's the problem. here's a look at our skycam network from asheville. you can see a ton of ice out that way. as we go up to woodruff road, we have rain. but i'm tling you, some of this is going to be freezing rain right here. it's right here along woodruff and 385 and 85 north, the mall, it's your home north of there. if it is, you're likely seeing some problems. there's the hilton greenville skycam. folks going at a speed limit pace or so. looks like they're going sort of slow, which is good, because you don't want to risk anything with this kind of weather. and we're continuing to see that. asheville, we continue to have snowy conditions. it has been a mess up there throughout the day today. and a look from our wofford skycam, they continue to see snowfall, and it has been heavy from time to time.
7:09 am
from our wofford skycam. currently 32 degrees. the colder air continuing to stream in from charlotte, and it's likely going to make it close to anderson, but right now you have rain there on the lake, 35 degrees. as we look at what's happeninin back up toward the north, it's becoming a serious situation with the ice, and that's going to be the concern as we head throughout the next couple of hours. you can see what was white across the greenville area, snow and sleet is now turning into freezing rain. the problem that i'm seeing here that's going to be a problem for us later on today is this batch of moisture back down toward the south. that's the heaviest stuff that's going to move through over the next three hours. after that, we'll transition over to some of this cooler weather, lighter weather. as this continues to move on through, we're going to see a lot of precipitation throughout the day that's going to make this a major storm for us. looking a little bit closer in on spartanburg county, there was some green, which is rain. thatats vanishing. watch how it just goes away in
7:10 am
that's the last 30 minutes, changing over to all freezing rain. greenville, right along pleasantburg, right around cherry, all of that northbound is freezing rain. downtown greenville, here at the station just north, we've got freezing rain and rain. but it's all changing over to freezing rain, and that's freezing up toward the mountain. pickens seeing some sleet and freezing rain. this is going to be a major ice storm for areas in greenville county, pickening county, over towards spartanburg and cherokee counties with nearly half an inch of ice. for the mountains, it's going to stay mainly snow. you can sesethe river valley, it goes right through here, some warmer air getting creeped up, that means we're seeing sleet mixing in with some of the snow. back towards jackson, significant snowfall right now. temperatures are cool back towards charlotte. look at that, 30 degrees. we're seeing the cold air rush in. it won't be long before the cold air makes it to spartanburg. you'll see 31. greenville drops to 32. i'm sure of that. i-85 northbound is where it's
7:11 am
let me show you the very latest computer model. this is going to creep south ever so slightly. we're going to see freezing rain in greenville and spartanburg, the heaviest is between now and 10:00. after that it's still going to be moderate through lunchtime. but it's going to be all freezing rain. that's -- it looks like rain, but it is freezing rain. it will freeze on contact. as we go throughout the afternoon hours, the freezing rain changes back over to snow. we could get a quick down burst of maybe one, two, three inches by this evening. after around 7:00 to 10:00, the snow comes to an end in the upstate and transitions to the north carolina mountains, where it will snow until tomorrow morning. you can see our latest expectations are still the same. everything on course right now with a quarter inch to half an inch of ice in the upstate. i've got the areas toward anderson and greenwood highlighted, but i think this is mainly going to be an event toward i-85 northbound with one to four inches of snow on top of that later on today.

7:24 am
here's the problem. throughout day, this is going to move over our area over the next five hours. back toward the east, we have all this stuff in the middle. this is going to move through in the afternoon and evening. this stuff is the heaviest. this is moderate stuff. here's the low pressure system that's going to move through later on tonight. this low is centered right in there, is going to whip around our area as we go throughout the evening hours. as it does, all this freezing rain is going to change to snow. so we'll get snow on the back end of this that could total an inch to two inches. let me get you back this closer, find your town here. spartanburg seeing rain mixing in from time to time. but all this pink around it is freezing rain. travelers rest, freezing rain. that is coating the power lines, the trees, the situation, and the roads. this is about to be a very serious situation. you do not want to travel in cherokee, spartanburg, and northern greenville county. geoff: chris, thank you. we're starting to see icicles
7:25 am
you saw that from mike mccormick. still cars out on the roads, but really, do your best to not get out on the roads here today. allyson: certainly looking different there than it is where corey is. corey davis is seeing more snow in asheville. corey: hey, ally and geoff a. lot more snow here. people are having trouble getting traction at this interaction on college street. check out this over here. you can see the tire tracks where a car got stuck. an asheville police officer was actually nice enough to come to this area and help push the car through the intersection. law enforcement agencies and road crews are working around the clock to make sure everyone is safe out there. t they're just asking for you to stay off the roads if you don't have to be out here. i'll show you how deep some of the snow is, too. take a look on this side here. you can see, this is the curb down through the street, so it shows just how deep it is. it's getting deep. the snow is coming down.
7:26 am
bit and made it more bearable out here. so, you know, kids who want to come out and go sledding, it is starting to be a little more bearable, and the wind is becoming less horrible, i would say. so we will continue to bring you conditions as they change. live in asheville, korey davis, wyff news 4. geoff: corey, thank you. stay warm there if you can. it's been some kind of morning. allyson: the sun is finally up, and we're seeing snow on the ground. you can see from our skycam here, that snow in spartanburg, but not the case in anderson county. geoff: yeah, in clemson, where aly myles is this morning, checking on conditions. aly? aly: good morning, guys. happy friday. definitely a different scene than what corey was just showing you. i think a few more spritely people here in clemson, because take a look at this. all we have got right now is rain. 36 degrees since about 4:00 a.m. this morning.
7:27 am
it has not stopped raining, so much so, if you take a look over here, you can see just how wetted these roads are, not t taking in any more moisture folks are still driving at a pretty strength speed right now. this seems to be just kind of regular traffic around here on highway 76 in downtown clemson. but something to keep in mind, if those temperatures do drop, if they do get below freezing that she water is going to create a sticky situation, a lot of black ice, if that does freeze over. so make sure to give yourself and your neighbor a little more room, a little more time this morning on your commute. aly myles, wyff news 4, live in downtown clemson. >> now your live super doppler 4 h.d. weather forecast. chris: right now, we're seeing freezing rain take over the area. you notice it's not rain by looking at the trees. they're going to be covered in a coat of ice, and you're going to start to see icicles.
7:28 am
inch of ice. all it takes is a quarter of an inch to make the roads treacherous. a half an inch, we would be concerned about power lines and trees with the weight. you combine that with more snow and wind coming in this evening, it's going t tbe a long day, especially along i-85 in spartanburg county, back toward cherokee county, and in through greenville county. this is the area from i guess right in here, when you move the camera over a little bit. basically western greenville county all the way through portions of spartanburg county, and then scooting back over to cherokee county right in here near blacksburg and gafnec. that is going to be i guess ground zero for the hardest hit area for ice later on today. pickens county, you're certainly going to see ice mix in as well. it's going to try to scoot down right here. also, northern akoni county, sleet, snow, freezing rain. french broad river valley, scooting down into south carolina, right now seeing some warm air infiltrating that. that's changing to snow, to
7:29 am
in with all that. a mess along 26 and up through i-40 right in here. some areas along i-40 going to see a foot of snow later on today. jackson seeing very heavy snow back towards wayne county. we're watching the temperatures. we're at 32 degrees in spartanburg. it's 30 in charlotte. we've got two forces happening. one, cold air moving in from the northeast. two, warm, moist air moving in from the south. the two collide right over our area, and we're creating an icy mess across the carolinas. look at the future plus forecast. very latest computer models showing, as we move in to 9:00 or 10:00, this is going to be the heaviest of the freezing rain from spartanburg to greenville. that freezing rain, due to the cold air moving in from charlotte, will scoot down into northern lawrence county, northeastern anderson county, pickens county, and then go back down very near clemson, so you folks that are right on the border here, i want you to be aware that things may be ok now, but may not be later on. for the mountains, we're going to see snow and mainly snow and
7:30 am
as we go to the afternoon hours, we're seeing the continue. but as cold air starts to rush in, we're going to see snowfall for the upstate, and that could certainly be heavy as we head through the 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. time frame tonight t. is going to be a long day with all kinds of precipitation. we're likely to see it all by tomorrow morning, a few flurry as cross the upstate, but the worst of it already over with. here's the latest expectations. a quarter of an inch of ice to half an inch, mixed in with one sleet. five to 12 inches of snow for the north carolina mountains. it is going to be a mess area wide. definitely stay at home if you can. allyson: taking a look at the road conditions, a little better view now that the sun is coming up. i-85 near the yellow mall, snow on the ground, icy conditions on the road. you can just see ice right there, a little bit of slush. cars are moving slowly. i'm seeing many accidents. i'm talking about 20 incidents.
7:31 am
the morning. here's what i'm looking at. icy road near highway 2 0, also spartanburg, i see areas, several accidents in the area throughout the morning. trees in the road. here's the next thing we're watching a. lot of this ice causing downed trees. highway 9 is blocked because of a tree in the road. this one, highway 11. you're going to want to watch out for that area. four trees down, we'll get you the rest of those coming up, one in pickens county as well. slow-moving travel on i-85. if you don't have to get out, don't get out today. but if you do, make sure you're going slow enough that you can manage. we've got i-40 also in haywood county, blocked. that's eastbound. i think we have our camera up in that area. that is blocked because of a tractor-trailer that has been disabled in the area. that's near new found road. so several areas to watch out for. don't get out on the roadways if you don't have to this morning. geoff: ally, thank you. with the daylight, we continue
7:32 am
we're looking at this morning. around 5:00 this morning, tim waller had nice, fluffy snow much that is not the conditions there right now. tim? tim: talk about unpleasant conditions right now. here in downtown traveler's rest, it is very cold. it is very wet. and that rain coming down is freezing as it hits. let me give you a good illustration right here. check out this pole right in front of the whistlele stop cafe. check out that glaze on there. i mean, this is just a rain that's coming down as soon as it hits and freezes. right here at the top, as we go up a couple of inches, you can see that's actually hard. i mean, it's starting to freeze right there. quite a change in what we've seen all morning long. two hours ago, i was showing you big, fluffy snowflakes coming down here and really just piling up on highway 276. and the snowplow came out there.
7:33 am
dug a couple of paths in there. look at all that snuff and the little snow boulders over there in the middle. they did a great job out here, because we have seen traffic. if you don't have to be out here, try to stay inside today. tim waller, live in t.r. geoff: these are the conditions you walk out the front door, and you end up on the wrong side. you see a lot of elbow injuries. be careful. a quick update. the panthers expect field conditions to be like sunday for the championship game with this weather. allyson: the crews are preparing the field for the game. before the weather arrive today, which it already has,
7:34 am
panthers officials say the tarps are expected to stay down until saturday afternoon when they expect the weather to pass. with a look ahead to the game now, here's brad fralick. brad: just a couple of days away from the n.f.c. championship game in charlotte between the carolina panthers and the arizona cardinals. a couple of injured panthers returned to the practice field on thursday. jared allen is still doubtful always plays with a chill on his shoulder, always as something to prove, and says the hardest thing to do is just wait for kickoff. >> right now i'm trying to be even keel, but really, i'm ready for this game to start, to be honest with you. been waiting and waiting and waiting.
7:35 am
a couple more days yet to play. >> josh norman is a premier cornerback. there's a reason he's going to be the highest paid free agent come this off-season, whatever team he goes. to hope it's in the a.f.c. you know, so we don't have to deal with him. he's playing at an extremely high level. brad: high praise for one of the league's best receivers. norman expects the cardinals to throw the football possibly 50-plus times sunday night, which he said hopefully gives him a chance to make a play or two. geoff: don't forget, brad and the sports team will have a fullllour dedicated to the panthers' run to the championship game against the cardinals. their special, tomorrow night at 7:00, right here on wyff 4. all sorts of great features, and they'll have a good bit of fun, too. that's tomorrow night. allyson: 7:43. taking a live look at what it looks like in traveler's rest. icy conditions on the roads.
7:36 am
7:37 am
myles is in this morning? chris: that's what i want, some areas around clemson, down to anderson, i want those areas to be on guard. you may not have anything now, but you could later on. it's those areas that are going to be right on the bubble, areas that are nowhere near the bubble, asheville, north carolina. look at the snowfall. it's continuing to be heavy up there, and we're going to see a lot of it. downtown greenville, you're not on the bubble. you're going to be impacted by sleet and freezing rain the rest of the day, 33 degrees. we've got the ground covered out there, and freezing rain moving in from the north. ice from earlier today. now we have freezing rain. it's 32 degrees there in spartanburg. look at the radar. the pink is freezing rain. the green, rain. let me zoom in and show what you we're talking about. what we're concerned about is this swath of moisture. this is going to move in over the next three hours. that's going to give us a ton of moisture. back toward the middle here in alabama, you've got moderate precipitation.
7:38 am
afternoon. this low right here is going to move right over our area. so folks, this is just getting started here. the heaviest will be this morning. we'll get this moderate stuff, maybe a lull around lunchtime. we'll get this moderate rain and freezing rain. and then snow on the back end. let me go to this live shot from traveler's rest, because it explains it right here. this is freezing rain, folks. it coats everything that it touches. this is a live look right now. you can see we've got a glaze. i'll have to ask tim how much of that is actually -- how thick that ice is, how much we already have across the area, because we're expecting about a quarter of an inch to half an inch. you add that to it, those limbs are going to start bending. we see the freezing rain very hard right now from cherokee county back towards spartanburg county. and then in northern greenville county, traveler's rest is right here. right in here. so that is heavy freezing rain right there. and it's takingngver areas to the south like greenville.
7:39 am
mall area northbound, you're under the gun for a significant ice storm. let's send things right now to mike mccormick, out in the ice right now. mike, how are things right now in spartanburg? mike: well, right now here on the west side of spartanburg, we are seeing very slushy roads. this is blackstock road right by westgate mall. what's interesting, most of the accumulation we've seen because of snow has cleared up in terms of slush, because we've had so much rain this morning. but don't let that fool you. there is a lot of slush, and it's getting packed down in places, and it's getting colder and the wind is picking up here in spartanburg. obviously the concern as the temperature drops is that the slush here is going to freeze and become very slick. there's been a good bit of traffic out this morning. obviously not nearly as much as we would see this time of morning on a friday. so the traffic that has been out there is helping clear the roads, plus the roads were pretreated yesterday. those are helping.
7:40 am
this morning, which are also lping clear out the roads. but again, very slushy, very wet, and no doubt slick in spots. situation will likely be slick as well, so keep that in mind for your driveway or even your walkways at home. that's the latest here in spartanburg. light rain and sleet coming down, and that's the latest here in spartanburg. back to you guys. geoff: mike, thank you. greenville, which was around 200, according to duke energy, now close to 700, actually close to 800 in spsptanburg county, about 130 customers without power right now. allyson: with the blue ridge electric, groanville, pickens county, -- greenville, publicens county, they're over there. all this ice you can see here affecting some power in the area. geoff: our reporter winning the snow race here this morning has been our corey davis, use up in asheville.
7:41 am
corey: hey, jev and ally. we're still surviving. one big lesson we have learned, just from watching, people who don't have four-wheel drive probably won't do well in this snow. we smaw people get stuck at this intersection. a police officer actually had to push a car through the intersection. just, you know, it ain't always worth it to come out here if you don't have to. i want to show you how deep it is here. just stepping off the sidewalk, you can't even tell where it ends. but it's very clear, when you step down, more than four inches, nearly five inches of snow here. and take a look at some of the city or county buildings, the top of the building there, you can see the snow accumulating on the top there. it's just still coming down. the area. the wind has let up a little bit, but overall, the entire morning, the wind has just been an issue, and it has been a little unbearable at times as well. so we will continue to bring you the latest on conditions
7:42 am
online and on air. corey davis, wyff 4. geoff: the conditions that corey is seeing right there in abville, an awful lot different than what tim waller is showing us in traveler's rest. allyson: tim? tim: well, i think the problem that we're seeing right now is everything is freezing up. everything. look at the bushes right here. you can see the moisture, as soon as it hits it right there, freezing. check out old glory over there. they were flying in the breeze a few must not ago, now they're just kind of in the down position. they're all frozen up and hard from the freezing rain that hit it. you know, this is even causing some difficulty for our equipment, the wires and the cameras that we have out here are just all coated in that freezing rain.
7:43 am
difficult, but that illustrates exactly what we're seeing, at least here in travelers rest, which is in that northern area that chris has been talking about all morning long. it is actually becoming a slightly treacherous place out here. i cannot attest to the road conditions north of here, but i can only assume, based on what we're seeing right here, already north, that it's not good out there. so don't drive unless you have to. back to you. geoff: tim, thank you. we don't usually call an assignment in rain a good assignment. but considering what others have been seeing here, our aly myles in some of the best conditions for our reporters this morning. allyson: yeah, and she's in anderson county, showing us more rain than ice or snow. aly: right in it. school is cancelled for you, work is cancelled, happy long weekend. it's definitely a different view from some of the other reporters this morning.

had since about 4:00 a.m. that's when we got out here. the rain must have been here before we were. it's been a consistent 36 degrees, according to our car thermometer. you can see traffic flowing nicely right now. nothing freezing as of yet. chris says there could be something coming in, could be colder weather coming in. if that's the case, welsh seeing some black ice on the roads. as of right now, i think it's just a very lucky part of the south carolina area, that they're not dealing with too much out here. lucky for me as well, because it means i'm staying a little warmer than some of the other reporters this morning. let's take a look at what they're dealing with. aly myles, wyff 4, clemson. geoff: what's the latest on the roads? allyson: we're seeing more downed trees. that's what i'm seeing, all these icy conditions. i-85, this one near the yellow mall there. you're taking a look here. icy conditions and snowy, slushy, so just be careful as
7:45 am
we are looking at some ice in spartanburg county, near 290. also on i-26, i'm watching some. i-26, hendersonville and asheville, we have many disabled vehicles there causing some problems. so roads just around traveling well. trees down in spartanburg highway 9, and also highway 11 and deer highway in greenville. again, travel times are slow on the interstate. if you're headed out, it should be a slower than normal drive. let's look outside and see how we look from our skycam, if we have that available. you can see just a little more ice and slush here. scombroip chris, not easy to explain this winter storm in about a minute, but do your best. chris: it's a tough situation out there. areas in the mountains seeing a wintry wrnedland here in asheville. lots and lots of snow. in greenville, all of it, freezing rain, sleet. one of our weather spotters, brandon, reporting freezing rain glazing over some of the bushes in his yard.

south right now. we're continuing to watch this situation unfold. wofford, snow and sleet from earlier. the glaze of ice on top of that right now, spartanburg going to be one of the hardest hit areas. look, folks, this system is nowhere near over with. let me show you how wide this system s. let's see if we can track it here. because this one is wide. i'm going to go from our area all the way back to the end of this system, which is going to be just west of memphis. we've got about 14 hours left, 514 miles wide, this storm. we're getting the first of the moisture right in here that's moving in right now. this is all going to fall as very heavy, freezing rain. we're going to get a bit of a lull later on this afternoon. it will still be misting, freezing rhine. after that, we're going to get the back end of this, which is going to be freezing rain and sleet. then tonight, we get what's going on in nashville and memphis, which is snowfall. it could be very heavy snowfall later on this evening. in the greenville area, we've got freezing rain.
7:47 am
spartanburg. this area going to be impacted by a significant ice storm. we're talking nearly a half an inch of ice, coating power lines, trees. that's why we're getting power outage reports right now, because the weight of that ice on the tree limbs is bending them down. this is going to be a very serious situation for these areas. back towards peckens and akoni county, serious, but not as bad. clemson, you're on the border right now. same for anderson. northern part of the county starting to see freezing rain ooze on down 95 right there. if you're on the border of this, it's trying to come south. the cold air is filtering in, and it's a close call 85. north of 85, hnker down. stay in place until this clears out tomorrow. we want to look at the spartanburg skycam to explain to you how bad the situation is and how much worse it's going to get. you can see it's icy just about everywhere you go. folks are able to make it around.

come in to our newsroom. this is from boone in north carolina. the snow there already deep, and showing us snow in asheville. geoff: more than 5,000, hundreds without power in macon county. wayne county nearly 400. transylvania county, just over 250678 the number has jumped big time in greenville for duke energy, reporting more than 1,400 customers without power, also about 130 outages in spartanburg county. allyson: last check, blue ridge electric reporting 47 outages in greenville county, more than 500 in both akoni and pickens county. geoff: chris, a lot of cars here on the road right now. when is that going to become an issue? chris: that's one of those areas that, right along i-85 and southbound, those are the borderline issues, where it's freezing rain, go back to rain and freezing rain. those areas, think of the mall.
7:50 am
see fluctuating conditions. geoff: what kind of time chris: throughout the next three hours. you're going to start to see get worse. you go north just to pleasantburg or stone avenue, just that much further north, it's a vastly different condition. it's going to continue to get worse as we go throughout the rest of the day. let's show you what's going on right now in asheville. a lot of snow. folks, this is going to be a foot or more in some locations in the mountains. it continues to snow up there very heavily. in the greenville area, here's a live look. the roads are wet, and that is the scary part, folks. it looks like it's wet and raining outside, but it's not. it's freezing rain. degrees. look at our icon there, bouncing -- that's ice. we are now down to 32. that's important, because we've been waiting for that transition to happen as colder air moves in. we've got the skycam, snow and sleet on the ground. freezing rain taking over now. it's 32 degrees. folks, this is about to get a lot worse for the
7:51 am
this storm stretches from myrtle beach all the way to memphis, tennessee. we're going to get this batch now. we'll get a break, a lull around lunchtime. by around 3:00, 4:00, we'll get this stuff right here, which will all fall as freeinging rain. later on tonight, we're going to get the back end, which is all snow. this is just getting started, folks, and will continue to get worse. closer. here's this batch. the worst of it's going to be over the next few hours, and getting in closer, you can clearly see a county divided in half, north of 5, solid freezing rain and ice. south of the city, you've got rain mixing in there. same thing for greenville. look at the green showing up there in downtown, simpsonville, down toward fountain inn. we've almost got a quarter of an inch of ice on the trees there. that's why we have so many power outages reported. pickens, snow, sleet and freezing rain. same thing for raven county in georgia.
7:52 am
there of almost five inches in northeast georgia, from asheville to henderson county. five to six inches of snow. same story. a lot of snow across the area, and we're now down to 32 degrees. that's the concerning part. this is going to turn into a major ice storm for the greenville-spartanburg area. if i had to pick a hot spot, it would be eastern greenville county, spartanburg county, and cherokee county being the hardest hit right in here up towards charlotte. this area going to see upwards of half an inch of ice later on today. that is just treacherous conditions, folks. let me show you the very latest computer model. this updates itself every 30 minutes. as we go throughout the rest of the day, the heavy, freezing rain will be here by around 11:00. we'll get a little bit of a break, mixing in by 2:00. later on tonight, cold air begins to rush in between 5:00 and 6:00. that freezing rain will change over to snowfall for us, and it's going to continue into the overnight hours, ending in the upstate by around 11:00,
7:53 am
john is making his tpwhay slowly right now, and it's a rough commute the closeer you get. folks, if you don't have to travel this morning, just try to stay put where you're at. geoff: chris, thank you. conditions continue to change. that's what we've seen from all of our reporters this morning, whether it's aly in clemson or corey davis in asheville, where we're going right now. allyson: a little more snowy in asheville. corey davis in asheville now. corey: yeah, definitely a lot of snow in the asheville area. a little bit earlier, we got five inches with the measuring tape. people are coming through this intersection right now, those who don't have four-while drive have been getting stuck. you can see the traction down there on the road. a police officer pushed someone through. too many people out. we did see someone running and someone biking through the area, too. so some are brave enough to venture out into the elements today. but we have been in and out of
7:54 am
my fingers are now frozen. my toes are frozen. i was doing fine up until the last half-hour or so. i'm starting to feel the effects of the cold out here. it's just messy conditions, but snowflakes, probably good enough to make some good snow balls in the area. i'm sure kids are excited to be out of school to go sledding, once the wind calms down. corey davis, wyff news 4, live in asheville. geoff: thank you. according to the conditions that mike mccook mick has seen in spartanburg, a little more is he seen, we've seen ice on trees. that ice is something we want to be avoiding. allyson: as you move south, it's more of an icy, slushy situation. mike mccormick knows that well in spartanburg county. mike: sleet mixed in. look behind me. this is the boulevard headed towards downtown spartanburg. you can see the roads are wet. in fact, you can see a lot of puddling in all the different
7:55 am
drops hitting the ground. but there are kind of lanes and strips of that slush throughout the road. there's a lot of slush on the sides of the road, where the cars have come and shot those waves of slush off on to the shoulders of e eh sides of the road. so be careful, especially when making turns, if you have to get out. but the biggest trouble is the slush out here, and then parking lots. a lot of the parking lots haven't been cleared. of course, situation, this one here along the road, icy, slshy. those are a problem as well. we have seen the plows out this morning, so that is the good news. we can see off in the distance from where we are right now, the i-26 overpass going over the west side of spartanburg. we've seen the plows going back and forth both directions on 26. so the crews are out. in fact, in the city of spartanburg, they've been on rotating 12-hour shifts starting at 2:00 this morning. so they are working on the roads, and we are seeing traffic picking up. but again, not nearly as much traffic that you see on the
7:56 am
especially on a friday. that's the good news. a lot of you able to stay home with schools, especially here in spartanburg county being closed. if u to get out, you're going to want to give yourself some time. again, because there's so much water on the roads, there is that concern as the temperature drops of everything freezing and becoming very slick. stay home if you can, and if you have to get out, give yourself some extra time. back to you guys. geoff: some of the highest snow total that is chris is reporting, polk county, tryon also, more than six inches here this morning. allyson: certainly not the conditions aly myles is here in anderson county, more of a rain mix. aly? aly: good morning, guys. a cold morning to say the least, but after seeing and hearing what my fellow reporters are going through, i don't think i am allowed to complain at all. take a look behind me. you can see clemson, downtown clemson, highway 76 right over
7:57 am
throwing freely, just a whole lot of rain. nonstop rain since we got here at 4:00 this morning. it'slso been a consistent 36 degrees, so no danger of anything freezing right now. if that number does drop, that's when you need to worry about the black ice. the thing do you need to worry about is the hired planing. the ground is not -- the hydroplaning. the ground is not soaking in any more water, and that's creating big, big puddles on the road. just be careful this morning. make sure you're giving your fellow drivers on either side of you some space, because it's definitely tricky staying in the line sometimes when there's puddle that has big. wyff news 4, live in downtown clemson. allyson: taking a look at the roads, many accidents we're seeing this morning are in spartanburg county. you can see about 18 to 20 incidents. i usually see about three or four this time of day. that's mile marker 66 you're looking at right there. ice on the interstate, and i-26
7:58 am
getting word from d.o.t., the ice is cleared off of i-26, but 85 still a little slippery. stranded vehicles from some icy areas in asheville causing a major backup this morning around the north carolina-south carolina line on i-26 in the area. and some trees down, all this ice causing downed trees in spartanburg, highway 9, also highway 11. slow moving traffic on i-85, and quite frankly, if you're headed out the door, should be slow moving traffic with all these icy conditions. let's look at some of our skycams here. conditions here, and more of an icy thing. that's your traffic. geoff: ally, thank you. chris, you've been showing us the sky comes. let's run through these sky comes if we can to kind of talk about the difference in the conditions where these skycams are. chris: that's what folks are wondering. ok, it's doing what i see outside my house, but can i get to work, my friend or family member's house?
7:59 am
let me show enthuse right here. asheville, look at the heavy snowfall we see on the skycam. let's take it so you can see it full screen. it is extremely windy in the mountains. that continues to be the problem. power outages will be a concern as we head through the overnight hours. let me transition down here to the woodruff road skycam t. looks wet. jeff, this is the most dangerous thing. would you think this looks ok? geoff: well, from what you've been telling me this morning -- chris: from what i told you. we're seeing ice building up on some of those locations. it's freezing rain right now in those locations, so it may look ok outside, but i'm telling you, conditions here from woodruff road, northbound pleasantburg, stone avenue are going to rapidly deteriorate. geoff: that's the worry right now. you think this is a safe spot, it is not, but it does change. when do you think that could happen? chris: over the next three hours. you'll see very heavy, freezing rain.
8:00 am
and then more moves in throughout the afternoon. going to be snow. we could get another one to two to three inches on top of that. for the mountains, all snow, asheville area. geoff: really a scary situation for sure. chris: it is. let's look at live super doppler 4 h.d. i'm going to get you through the sky comes. this is the dramatic scene from greenville. again, looking ok. the roads are wet, but it's deceiving. it looks ok out there, but i'm telling you, it takes a while freezing rain to start to pile up on the roads, but you touch the rails, you touch your tree limbs outside, they're going to be coated in ice. you can see that happening. because the temperature now is 32 degrees. that's all it takes. one degree for it to be rain or freezing rain, and we've seen the cold air, the colder temperatures drop from charlotte to spartanburg. spartanburg, you can see, we've got a sidewalk there. we've got the rain and the

at wofford college at 32 degrees. this system has a long ways to go. tracking it from myrtle beach all the way over to memphis, this line right here northbound going to get it hard today. it's going to be freezing rain and a lot of it. and this first batch right in here is going to be the concern over the next two hours. it's moving in to akoni county, greenville county, you'll get it too. this will coat everything with a solid glaze of ice very shortly within the next hour or so. we'll get a break. it will be a cloudy, maybe misty couple of hours there around lunch. and then we're going to get this stuff back towards huntsville. and then this evening, we'll get the stuff back towards memphis, which will fall as snowfall later on. we're going to continue to track this, because this is a very fluid situation. we'll keep you posted. allyson: thank you, chris. taking a look outside, what conditions look like at i-85, spartanburg police saying as of right now, all city offices are open. they're shoveling the walkways there.
