including a four-year-old boy, and four of those deaths happened right here in upstate south carolina. two of those weather related deaths happened on friday night in greenville county. a couple was found dead in their home from carbon monoxide poisoning. the reason, a gas generator they were using in their garage. wyff news 4 allyson powell is live in greenville county with more on how you can keep your family safe this winter. allyson? allyson: the coroner believes it was a gas generator in the caused the carbon monoxide tilde. jason is the deputy fire marshal and he says this time of year is especially dangerous for carbon monoxidehe has a few tips to keep you safe. nurmi says they answer carbon monoxide calls quite often in the winter. >> a lot of times the symptoms , come out like the stomach bug or something similar.

allyson: nurmi says carbon monoxide can come from any gas fueled appliance. >> your vent pipes for dryers , heaters, if they become frozen, all of the carbon monoxide has no way to leave your house and builds up into house and stays in house. even chimneys, if you don't use them, the carbon monoxide backs up. allyson: the only way to detect the odorless, tastesless gas, a carbon monoxide detector. and you should install more than one in your ho >> install them per manufacterur instructions. each floor level, any where you have a fuel fire appliance. allyson: nurmi says don't assume if you have new smoke detectors, the carbon monoxide is built in. have inspectors check any gas powered appliance in your home annualy. another thing, the folks here at

remind you to warm your car up outside of garage. also, if you're detectors go outside appear -- go off, get somewhere outside in the fresh air and call 911, but don't ventilate your home. if it is ventilated, the fire department is not able to detect where the leak is coming from. allyson powell wyff news 4 in greenville. geoff: thank you. in north carolia now, emergency crews used a helicopter to rescue a man stranded in deep snow near the top of mt. pisgah. the department of public safety says the worker was using a cable car on the mountain near the peak when the cable car stopped working on monday. after resuce crews determined they couldn't reach the man on foot because of the th deployed the north carolina heloaquatic rescue team. the black hawl helicte -- black hawk helicopter crews were able to resuce th and school districupto announno as the list grows, but so far, spartanburg district five has added feb

unsupervised probation after pleading guilty yesterday to misdemeanor negligent storage of a firearm. authorities say heather stepp was babysitting 2-year-old abagail newman when was fatally shot by a load shotgun that was on a table. in anderson county, the case against an upstate man accused of sex crimes against children is heading to a joseph patterson appeared in a courtroom yesterday for a preliminary hearing. the 57-year-old faces 21 charges involving nine alleged victims some younger than 12-years-old. ,minor league baseball in the upstate. the greenville drive announced they will continue to be an affiliate of the boston red sox for another four years. the drive team owner and manager made the announcement, along with drive manager darren

geoff 4 noon, iefgeoff: a man who brought nascar to live for many for more than 50 years passed away. barney hall was an anchor for the motor racing network. his unique brand of storytelling earned him a p hall of fame in 2012. nascar is reporting he died yesterday, from complications after a recent medical operation. he was 83-years-old. fire officials have been on the scene all morning of a massive fire in new orleans historic french quarter. a commercial building caught fire early this morning, and it has now spread to the building next door. at one point, this was a six alarm fire. the state fire marshal says one person was in the first building, but escaped the flames without getting hurt. the crew's main concern right now is stopping the fire from spreading any further. new details this afterno a deadly turn in that weeks-long standoff in oregon. the fbi arrested eight

leader, ammon bundy. overnight, the fbi identified the man killed in a shootout as lavoy finicum. agents say finicum and bundy's brother refused to surrender. agents say they aren't sure who fired the first shots. all of the suspects are now facing federal conspiracy charges for the protest over federal land rights. a school principal is dead and two students are recovering after a bus accident near indianapolis. the crash happened outside beverland elementary. officials say the bus jumped a curb and hit the victims who were outside. principal susan jordan was killed. the students were taken to the hospital. the cause of the crash is under investigation. >> very, very sad that i have to report that the fatality was a great educator. ms. susan jordan, the principal of amy beverland was fatally

geoff: no charges have been filed but the bus driver did have to take a drug and alcohol test. a federal judge has ordered the release of hundreds of documents related to conviction of boston marathon bomber dzhokhar tsarnaev. he and his brother tamerlan placed two bombsth line of the race in 2013. the explosion left three people dead and more than 260 injured. tamerlan was killed during the manhunt, and his brother was convicted and sentenced to death. deputies in orange county, california, are now offering a $200,000 reward for information on three escaped inmates. immigration authorities say one of the inmates was supposed to be deported to vietnam in 1998 but stayed in the country. the three inmates were awaiting trials for unrelated violent crimes when they vanished from a dormitory at the county's central jail. deputies say they escaped by sawing through a thick wall and climbing through plumbing tunnels.
