a fast-moving cold front, which is in the great lakes right now, will race down and approach the north carolina-tennessee line by late tonight, early could -- that could trigger scattered snow flurries for the northern mountai along the tennessee line. even asheville could see a brief snow shower or flurries along with windy conditions as the front approaches late tonight. now back to you. nigel: thanks, john. in commitment 2016, republican presidential candidates take th without their frontrunner, donald trump. the first, or "undercard" debate, will be between carly fiorina, mike huckabee, rick santorum, and former virginia governor jim gilmore. debate rules say because of their low poll numbers, they cannot debate on the main stage. there is one more debate before the south carolina primary. it will be on abc, and because of their debate rules, this will be the last undercard debate, meaning this could be the last chance these candidates have to get their message out in prime time.

up at 6:00, with a complete wrap-up at 11:00. gabrielle: back here at home now united way of greenville , county had their as celebration today at the td convention center. they are celebrating a big number. th campaign raised over $16 million. today, 1100 volunteers a some orders were there. the awards ceremony is to take -- to thank companies and organizations that raised money for united way in michael 2015. cogdill and carol goldsm the special guest emcees. this year's leadership spoke with gratitude to the community. >> today is a special day for greenville and for the united today, we celebrate, we celebrate the accomplishments of the united way, and we honor those who help make the campaign great, and those who volunteer their efforts to help impact lives for greenville county. gabrielle: united way agencies serve tens of thousands of people.

united way's cycle of success program, helping children start school prepared and succeed later in life. nigel: today, korean veterans were honored in spartanburg county. 22 veterans received a medal a a a high school. the award is given to men and women who served in the korean war from 1950-1953. >> it is an honor to have it. [indiscernible] >> this especially, because it calls for peace. and with god is our witness, we should all call for peace. nigel: each veteran was also given a certificate of appreciation. gabrielle: today hundreds , packed into an upstate church to eat lunch, for a good cause. it was grace episcopal's annual soup luncheon

bowl of soup, cornbread, a dessert, and drink. the church usually raises around $7,000 during the event, and this year, all the money is going to meals on wheels of anders. >> it's their 40th anniversary, and when they first started, they actually started here at grace church, in our kitchen. it's a great thing to promote meals on wheels, and for the whole congregation to get together and have some fun, and continue the great tradition. gabrielle: 110 gallons of soup were prepared by about 75 vovonteers at the church. customers could eat there, or order takeout. nigel: coming up, starting today, dozens o walmarts around the country are closing their doors. how it's affecting the small communities where many of them are. aly: hundreds of greenville county kids, getting the chance to meet some of the inspiring players at furman university.

education day. nigel: starting today, thousands of people who've come to rely on their local walmart store are going to have to find somewhere else to shop. gabrielle: with very little warning, the retail chain is closing more than 150 stores throughout the country, sending shock waves through many

natalie morales has more. natalie: it's devastating for a lot of people. right now, many of the walma are the only grocery and pharmacy around. in some places, closing the store will leave behind a "food desert," meaning no supermarket within ten miles. >> when you don't have the transportation, or you don't have the means to get to where you need to get, it's going to hurt. natalie: and the pain will be widespread. walmart is shutting down 154 stores in 27 states and puerto rico, creating "food deserts" in three states, alabama, arkansas, and kansas. >> they're packing up and leaving the town high and dry. natalie: for nearly half a century, renee smith's family owned a small grocery store in the tiny town of oriental, north carolina. a year and a half ago, walmart came to oriental, forcing renee to board up her store. but now, walmart is closing, and renee and many of the town's residents are bitter. >> they knew when i left, when we went out of business, they were leaving. they had to. it's

natalie: it's a similar story in many towns. in ashburn, georgia. in italy, texas where the town's only pharmacy, in the walmart, is closing today. >> why would you go to the expense of building a building, and putting a store in, then all of a sudden -- [clap] natalie: a spokesman for walmart told nbc news, "we never want to walk away from the opportunity to serve customers, especially in underserved areas. we share the communities' disappointment about this difficult decision." >> i don't like it. i don't like it at all. it makes it inconvenient. i love this store. nigel: natalie morales reporting. the neighborhood market store in pacolet and the store in gray court are on the list of stores that will be closing. gabrielle: walmart says it committed to opening 300 stores in food desert areas, and it's exceeded that goal. michael: just ahead, music education, amplified. >> this is something special, and you have to take advantage

the charleston animal society is helping the a-s- p-c-a wi gabrielle: the charleston animal societith a the organization sent staff to assist after 600 animals were founded in unlicensed re raleigh. 300 talks, 250 cats, 40 horses and several farm animals were found at the facility. investigators say many of them had been neglected. some had open wounds, others were malnourished. the owners face neglect charges. nigel: a kansas city police chief is being called a hero after dash cam video shows h saving a man from a vehicle fire. chief corey was the first to respond to a f campsite in linn valley. he found a vehicle engulfed in

a few feet away. the chief dragged the man away from the fire. firefighters say ammunition inside the car was exploding as paramedics got to the >> when you show up, none of that stuff is really going through your mind. you just see what's going on, and you u act to what you need to do at that time. nigel: the fire chief says, without the police chief's intervention, the man may not have survived. he was treated for smoke inhalation. investigators suspect the driv was attempting to commit suicide, and caused the fire. gabrielle: a georgia high school is under fire for its raffle giveaway. in jasper, georgia, which is north of atlanta, a wrestling team's booster club at a local high school is raffling off a glock 43 9 millimiter pistol. the winner must be at least 21 years old, and pass a federal and state background check. many in the community have complained about the raffle. the school district, in return, says since they are not conducucng this fundraiser, they have no control or authority over the booster club. a local gun shop donated the weapon, which it says is valued

nigel: authorities in washington, d.c. have handed out more than $1 million in fines for parking. this, after declaring a snow emergency. the washington post reports, as of wednesday aftony has issued more than 5,000 tickets. all this, during the city's parking ban during the snowf those cost the owner $250. the city also towed nearly 700 vehicles. not counting the towing fees, the fines total just over $1.3 million. gabrielle: uber has plans to improve ride feedback for drivers and riders. the company says it will start usg smart phones to check whether its drivers are speeding. the program will use a smartphone's gyrometers, gps, and accelerometers to record data, and that data will be used to verify feedback from riders. in a company blog post this week, uber's chief security officer wrote, "if a rider complains that a driver accelerated too fast and broke too hard, we can review that trip using data.

hundreds of greenville county nigel: hundreds of greenville county students got the chance to meet and watch some of their local role models today. gabrielle: wyff news 4's aly education day. aly: it's not every day t to hang out in timmons arena with furman's elite athletes. >> i wonder how they get all the talent here, and abilities. aly: nor do 830 kids usually ask for your autograph. >> just to know that we're role models, and they look up to us, that, like, makes us happy, and we're happy to make their day. aly: but this education day isn't just about the posters, the photos, the autographs. this is about teaching kids to work hard. >> any time you can show young ladies and young men college, and pursuing dreams, and athletics, and also show they'll have careers and meet a lot of people

have a debate and let's see how they do with the ratings. republicans debate tonight. donald trump has other plans. what this means for the race three days before the caucuscarol: but first tonight, new information into our newsroom. a husband accused of shooting his wife, and leaving her for dead, just faced a judge in spartanburg county. michael: wyff news 4's corey davis was in the hearing. he's live and local, with more on the judge's decision. corey? corey: tonight, i spoke with, the judge denied bond. i spoke with the attorney representing the wife, and he says she was shot at least four says she didn't want her husband to get out of jail because she was the only witness and e believed he would come back and finish her off.he is charged with attempted murder. he could face up to 30 years in prisdeputies say batchelor shot his wife, stephanie, several times in their garage earlier this month. she was found face down in the

and head, next to their home on reidville road. sheriff chuck wright says stephanie was able to talk to deputies yesterday for the first time since the shooting, and the evidence pointed to her husband. the sheriff doesn't know why the shooting happened, but he is suggesting families seek counseling to avoid domestic violence situat>>o many. there are other ways you should be able to handle it. for the love of god, we're grown people. we don't have to resort to barbaric ways of treating our spouses. corey: stephanie's attorney says doctors call her recovery miraculous. the e couple has a two-year-old and four-year-old, and the children are under the custody, under the care of relatives. corey davis, wyff news 4 live in spartanburg.
