police say a group of teenagers went there to conduct a drug deal in the parking lot. >> 'cause they're looking out for safety concerns, in case someone tries to rob them. myra: ironically, investigators say the drug deal turned into an attempted robbery, and ended with gunfire that killed allen, and injured two others. police aren't releasing the specifics of who was doing what. >> and in this case, we believe these are stolen, and we're trying to locate where these guns came from at this point. myra: sergeant ben ford says these days, teens don't have to try too hard to get their hands on guns or drugs. >> if you're in the right circles, it doesn't take much. a little bit of money. myra: savon allen's stepfather told wyff that he was a young man with a big heart, but he got tied up in the wrong things. allen's aunt says, "he was just trying to find his way in the world, but he got lost." >> my condolences go out to his family, that he lost his life in this way. i'm very sad that he lost his life this way, but hopefully, other young people

that will set up next week, what happens in new hampshire. nbc news will have complete coverage all day long and through the night until we have winners of the iowa caucuses. i'm tom brokaw, in des moines. michael: interesting night, interesting year. again, you can catch nbc nightly news live from iowa, next at 6:30 carol: so, what is the difference between a caucus and a primary? here is our nigel robertson with the answer. nigel: so, what is a caucus? well, a caucus is really a gathering of people at a school, community center, or church. they gather, they hear from the candidates' surrogates, and then they vote. for the republicans, it's easy. they hear from the surrogates, and then they cast their ballot. whoever gets the most votes gets the most delegates. but for democrats, a caucus is a little more complicated. caucus-goers gather, and then they literally break off into different sections of the room.

you've got an area for o'malley, and you have an area fe sanders. each area has to have at least 15%. so, lets say the o'malley group is less than 15%. what happens then? they literally have to decide wether -- whether they are going to go to the c corner or the , sanders corner. whatever corner they decide, that is where they then stay. those votes are then tabulated, and then, from there, the delegates are then awarded. michael: that was nigel robertson. we will keep you posted. volunteers from agencies, organization and hospitals are counting the homeless. it is a yearly count. the department od urban development asks each state to do this. volunteers ask homel where they slept the night of january 27th. they also ask for their first initial, last name, birth date, and the last four digits of their social security number. the number helps determine the need in each area. >> i always think the homeless

inmates getting out. michael: wyff news 4's mandy gaither is live and local in oc mandy: inmates used to be brought in through the sallyport here, to be booked in. but pretty soon, this will be an entrance into a place to helpeme able to use the laundry facility. mandy: it may not look like much now, but soon, this old jail will provide a new life for those who come here. >> each bed will be repainted. we'll put new mattresses on each one. mandy: in part of the former oconee county detention center, there will be emergency shelter and a meal, for those without a home. >> these tables will be removed. it's going to be a nice sitting area for the individuals, so that they can lounge at night. over here, we're going to be putting in new windows, so that natural light will be coming into each room. mandy: the other part of the old jail will help inmates adjust to life on the outside. upon their release, this place will provide life skills
