was heading home to florida for a fresh change of clothes. >> perhaps humbled by a loss, donald trump has been stunningly silent on twitter. he hasn't tweeted since before last night's caucuses. the thing to watch is how he responds and adjusts going forward. this morning, marco rubio is touting he has what he describes as marcomentum. his campaign revealing it'll get a new endorsement from the south carolina senator. matt and savannah? >> south carolina voting after new hampshire. peter, thank you very much. shortly after his victory speech, cruz spoke to nbc news before he headed to new hampshire. he had a lot of interesting things to say about the results in iowa. nbc's hallie jackson caught up with him. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. this morning, senator cruz is catching up on his sleep. we only landed on his plane about two hours ago in new hampshire. ted cruz is already on the move again, heading to south carolina today, then back to new hampshire tonight.

natural fit for him, but where momentum from iowa could put him in the top two here. >> tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this great nation. >> congratulations. >> thank you. it has been a remarkable victory. it's really a testament to the grassroots. it is courageous conservatives all across iowa, all across the country, who stood up today and had their voices heard. >> you're one of the few candidates in this race who has gone toe to toe with trump and taken a punch from him, or body shots as you might phrase it. >> there is a big question mark on your head, and you can't do that to the party. >> how does this reflect in what you might do with your closest competitor, donald trump, moving forward? >> listen, my approach to donald and everybody else has been not to go in the mud, not to engage in the insults or attacks. if he or anyone else insults me, i don't respond in time.
7:07 am
>> i'm not going to be taking legal advice from donald trump. >> i do think differences on policy, or record, or substance, that's fair game. but i think the voters are not interested in politicians bickering like school children. i will note, the last two winners of the iowa caucus came out of this caucus with no money. they were broke. they did not have the national team or infrastructure to be in a position to be able to compete effectively and win the nomination. we're in a different position. >> this is a two-man race, you'd like to say, but given rubio's showing, what many consider a strong third, how can you say that? is it a three-man race? >> it'll be up to the voters. i'm amused at listening to the media talk about an impressive third place finish. what i think is impressive is the 50,000 courageous conservatives that stood up in the state of iowa and gave us the largest victory in a republican caucus in the history of this state. >> third place doesn't matter?
7:08 am
everyone in the field is terrific. what i'm encouraged by is the grassroots army that's getting stronger each and every day. >> what does this mean for you going forward? you head to new hampshire and south carolina. what's the strategy for you? how do you win the nomination? >> it's very much the same thing as what we did in iowa. new hampshire, south carolina and nevada and all across the country. we're answering the questions of the men and women of iowa and earning the votes one person at a time. >> looking forward to what's happening here in new hampshire, senator cruz elaborated on that. saying he'll do what he did in iowa. get on the ground, do the tailing politicking. at houses and coffee shops and dunkin donuts. it's a new race one week away. >> hallie jackson, thank you very much. >> this race will run on dunkin for the next few weeks. we knew the race was tightht and the results proved that.

winner, but bernie sanders is calling it a virtual tie. nbc's andrea mitchell is covering that race. she has made her way to new hampshire overnight, as well. good morning. >> good morning, savannah. it was the closest democratic iowa caucus race in history. hillary clinton apparently saving off another embarrassing upset in the state, but arriving here a few hours ago in new hampshire without the momentum she was hoping for. >> i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief. thank you, iowa. >> iowa, thank you. >> reporter: early this morning, hillary clinton was named the winner of the iowa caucuses, after a close race with bernie sanders. who responded to the news after arriving in new hampshire this morning. >> do you anticipate contesting the vote count? >> we just got off the plane and we don't know enough about it. >> reporter: a race so tight, in a few caucus briefings, some county delegates were decided by

something party officials recommend to settle disputed towns. >> it looks like we'll have about half of the iowa delegates. >> reporter: for sanders, the tension was high. watching the results come in from his hotel room. pacing in front of the television. even claydelaying his flight to new hampshire, hoping to see the final call. it came after he left. after a chaotic night, there are questions that the iowa democratic party was unprepared. the sanders campaign accusing the party of not properly training their precinct chairs. both candidates are looking ahead to new hampshire, where sanders has a massive lead. clinton is calling herself a progressive, aligning herself with sanders' issues. >> i am a progressive who gets things done for people. >> reporter: while sanders is firing up his base. >> what iowa has begun tonight is a political revolution.

coming out of iowa in a fight that has just begun. >> and sanders has proved just how much fight he's got left in him. he came directly from his plane on the overnight flight a few hours ago, going out to a pickup truck, climbing on to treat his supporters who have been waiting for hours in the cold to greet him there. this is going to be a much tougher fight than anynye had expected. >> andrea mitchell, thank you so much. let's bring in chuck todd and nicolle wallace. long night for you. morning. >> where am i? >> let's start on the republican side. yesterday morning you told us confident. we interviewed donald trump yesterday morning and he seemed uncharacteristically subdued. did they know it was coming? >> i think the cruz camp knew it was coming. i saw them the day before and they were calm. they hung out a long time and there were no frantic cell phones. i thought, they either knew they

were going to lose. they built the model with the capacity to go to 170,000. it went bigger. they knew they were going to do well last night. >> what is trump supposed to make of this? is it just, he didn't organize well in the end for iowa, and it's iowa specific, or is this a sign that perhaps the support you see in polls over and over again, that there's less than meets the eye when it comes down to voters writing down his name? >> the answer to both questions are yes. meaning that, look, if people are not people that are used to participating in the process, guess what that means? you'll work even harder to get them out to vote. look, he spent -- he crammed for a college exam, and he did a lot of really good organizing in the last ten days of this. i think now we look back, he may have saved himself from finishing second. it may have plummeted further had he not put the extra effort he did in the last ten days. >> cruz gets bragging rights and heads forward to new hampshire.
7:13 am
conservatives there. a lot of people describe themselves as independent. how does he play there? >> listen, he's so well-known as this idealogically pure guy who doesn't get along with his establishment buddies. it's going to be hard to escape that. rubio to me is the guy that can make the best case against cruz in iowa. trump has used up his attacks. he went through canada, went through his litany of attacks. i don't know what trump has left. rubio really hasn't engaged cruz in front of that new hampshire electorate in a way yet that i think we're going to see. >> think about rubio next week. maybe the endorsements are going to pour in. on the other hand, the attacks from every corner, they're coming. >> if you're marco rubio, that i have -- they've been coming. nobody has been attacked more. ok what he ended up doing. on one hand, you have to be
7:14 am
he has to finish second in new hampshire, minimum, i think. ted cruz has a shot at second. this is going to be a fascinating three-way race with a couple of -- one wild card left, probably john kasich who could make voice. maybe christie makes noise. but the one, two, three is going to be the story next week. >> hillary clinton gets to come out of iowa and say, technically, i'm the winner, but this had to be a near-death experience for the once presumptive nominee. >> she avoided a complete disaster. a win is a win. bernie sanders has to feel great and, yet, you can look at it anotherray and say, if he couldn't beat her under these conditions in this state, how is he going to beat her in south carolina, alabama, where the electorate is more diverse? all that said, you could feel it. the clinton campaign may have won technically, they're acting like they loss.

like they won. >> thank you much. get some sleep. we'll have more on the iowa results and the impact on both races moving forward ahead. pivotal court hearing in the case against bill cosby. could his legal team get criminal charges dismissed? stephanie gosk is at the courthouse. good morning to you. >> good morning, matt. bill cosby's legal team are back in court, arguing that the criminal charges be thrown out all together. cosby denies the allegations that he drugged and sexually assaulted andrea over a decade ago here in montgomery county. the district attorney did not press charges. he said he struck a deal with cosby that he wouldn't are charges if the comedian testified in his civil case. cosby testified. the deposition is now at the heart of the charges being filed today against cosby by an entirely different district

7:31 am
sanders is declaring victory, in that he came up against her tough organization. he is a 74-year-old democratic socialist who isn't even a member of the democratic party. so this is really a reality check. a tough reality check for hillary clinton. she has to realize now that she only got a smattering of votes of younger people. he got 70% of those under 30. this is a tough road ahead, especially in the caucus states where she should be strong. >> thank you very much. the results were more clear cut on the republican side. ted cruz scored an upset over donald trump. for that story, let's go back to nbc national correspondent peter alexander. good morning again to you. >> savannah, good morning. it was a commanding victory for ted cruz. here are the standings from last night, resetting the table going forward. ted cruz with 28% support of iowa caucus goers. donald trump a disappointing second at 24%.

he basically gets a draw in iowa. what happens with him in new hampshire? >> he's already ahead here. he is, as you suggested, i think, going to raise tens of millions of dollars off of his strong performance in iowa. hillary clinton is the favorite to win the democratic nomination. she will be until sanders proves he can win beyond iowa or new hampshire. the clintons don't like to have less money than the people they're running against. i think hillary clinton may have to beat sanders with less money in the bank. an extraordinary position for her to be in against a democratic socialist who is raising his money in small dollar donations against her big donations, the old fashioned way. >> mark, thanks so much. appreciate it. >> thanks. weather has been another big story for us. let's get a check from al. >> announcer: today's weather is brought to you by kay jewelers. every kiss beginsith kay.
