>> live, local, breaking news. this is wyff news 4 at 11:00 in high definition. michael: tonight, the super bowl in the panthers super season came to an end. in the end, it was a second-place finish for the panthers. the best season in panthers history fell just short of the prize tonight. carol: wyff news 4's ricardo lecompte joins us now. ricardo, the panthers kept it close until late. ricardo: they were within striking distance of the couldn't overcome the defense of the broncos. carolina in the big game for the first time since the 2003 season. let's go out to levi's stadium to check out the highlights. the panthers -- >> this is something's -- the start of something great for the panthers. ricardo: those are not the highlights we have of the super bowl.

let's head live to sports director brad fralick, live outside levi's stadium. brad, that number one defense for the broncos was the story. they kept the league's number one offense in check. brad: that is something that has happened in the past. multiple times in the past, the highest scoring offense comes into the super bowl, and it is the defense that ultimately wins the championship. we hear that all the time, defense wins championships. but the broncos dominated this game on the defensive side. when an defensive -- a defensive guy, miller who graduated from texas a&m, when he gets the m.v.p., defense dominated the game. cam newton was sacked asked times. that was not the plan going in. the panthers turned it over three times. ron rivera, not pleased with the performance.

reaction in a moment. let's look at highlights of the super bowl between the panthers in broncos. it wrapped up a couple minutes ago. there is steph curry, pounding the "keep pounding" drum. second quarter, trailing 10-zero until stewart gets the panthers of the board. they trailed 13-7 at the break. fourth quarter, carolina down 16-10. cam newton gets stripped by miller. the m.v.p. forcing a couple turnovers that led to scores. ward recovers the ball. panthers turned the ball over 4 times in this game, also a season high. broncos put it away. cj anderson bangs it in from a yard out. denver captures its third super bowl title in franchise history, beating carolina, 24-10. like i said von miller named , super bowl mvp. peyton manning rides into the sunset and the panthers now 0 , and 2 in the big game. >> the biggest thing is, we

we got into their half of the field and turned it over. we lost fumbles and interceptions. we had opportunities to score and we didn't do that. we missed a field goal. these are things you can't expect to do and win a championship game. especially against a defense that productive. i have to give them credit for what they did. ricardo: coach rivera, gracious after the loss to the broncos. we will have much more on the panthers lost coming up later in the news cast. michael: no city was more energized during the super bowl run than the queen city itself. we're talking about charlotte. carol: fans packed a popular sports bar there. it's where we sent wyff news 4's tim waller, who is there live tonight. tim, it's cleared out now, hasn't it? tim: it sure has. let me state the obvious, this is not the fairytale ending many people in charlotte had dreamed about.

halftime. certainly, they saw that around the third quarter. the program fell apart. you could see the looks on their faces as they realized the panthers would not win the super bowl. but boy, what a party at the all american public. let's look inside at the thousands of people who were in there, elbow to elbow, all night long. you can watch the ad and flow of emotion as the panthers scored, lots of smiles. and it would fumble or turn it over, lots of disappointment. back and forth like that, it went all night. regardless of the outcome, fans say this was a pivotal moment in fit -- in football history for the panthers. >> i think this is the start of something great for charlotte, the start of something great for the panthers. this is a very small taste of what's to come. >> the city loves their panthers, and its wonderful to be a part of it. it really makes you proud to be in a city that's growing so

>> $1000 on the game. tim: the guy that walked by said, i lost $1000 on the game. that is how it goes. and a "keep pounding" became by. one guy said, it is what it is. the panthers went to the super bowl. nobody wanted the loss, but a lot of people have high hopes for next year. people hope they will be back in the super bowl. michael and carol? carol: obviously, people are disappointed but there seems to be a sense of optimism. tim: absolutely. that is one of the themes here. these are some of the gracious fans of the all-american pub. if you have never heard of this place, it is a popular establishment. take a look at the shot him sky4, the beautiful city of charlotte, on this disappointing super bowl night for so many.

kept their cool. i will be honest, i expected more disappointment after the loss to the broncos, but it is what it is, one guy said a few minutes ago. michael and carol? carol: thanks, tim. we will talk to you later. carol: back to the upstate now, and the summer home of the carolina panthers. michael: plenty of pride around here, as well. wyff news 4's mike mccormick spent the evening at watch parties. he joins us, live and local in spartanburg. mike? mike: we have been watching fans trickle out of bars and restaurants in spartanburg. but even after they are gone, the signs of support, like this banner, will remain. as for the watch parties, there were many of them through the summer home of the pampers tonight. on the eastside, hickory tavern decorated for the big occasion. all the tv's, food, and drinks attracted fans of all ages. the place was packed all night long. wofford college, which hosts panthers training camp every year, had a watch party for students. they got together, had wings and

players they share their campus with every summer. plus, they know the team's owner graduated from their school, and that makes the game, and it -- and the achievement, personal for the students. >> jerry richardson has utmost importance here. he's done so much for the school. everything he does for us, we have to support what he does for the panthers, so they're the priority right now. >> mr. jerry richardson is really awesome to wofford, and i just figured it'd be good to come out with the community of the school, and just eat wings and hang out and watch football. mike: speaking of the support in this is a picture of spartanburg's panthers banner, hanging in the team's hotel in california. the city put up the banner at invited everyone to sign it. the city then sent it to the team's hotel, so the players can

the support from spartanburg, hanging here in morgan's square in downtown spartanburg. downtown getting quieter as bars and restaurants shut down after a very rowdy, hopeful night tonight. mike mccormick, wyff news 4 live in downtown spartanburg. michael: they will be rowdy come camp time. bars and restaurants were packed across greenville tonight. carol: wyff news 4's corey davis is live and local at bar louie in magnolia park, on woodruff road. corey, lots of panther pride there? corey: definitely. fans were glued to the tvs at bar louie, hoping the panthers would come up with the win. they had a lot of morale here. fans were pumped. take a look at this video. i got some fans to show us their best dab, a popular dance the panthers fans do. they do it very well here. lots of cam newton and luke

many fans say they are still all about their panthers. >> love cam newton. big sec fans when he was playing before, in college ball, and i was like, yes. >> actually, i'm a cowboys fan, but i've been liking the panthers ever since they came. they were my second favorite team, and trust me, i love them. corey: that cowboys fan wasn't the only person who roots for another team. we saw denver's broncos fans, new orleans saints, and even a guy who had a detroit lions jersey. back live here, most of the crowd has cleared out of our louie. i asked a few people earlier what they were looking for. none of them said the halftime show or commercials. but i will tell you the national , anthem, and the halftime, got lots of applause here at bar louie. and the commercials got a lot of laughs. corey davis, wyff news 4, live in greenville. michael: it is all about the spectacle.

making season for the panthers. chris: a winter weather advisory from asheville northbound. that will happen throughout the day tomorrow with maybe an inch. the storm gets worse as we head into the overnight hours of monday into tuesday. that is why there is a winter storm watch for the tennessee border counties, 3-6 inches possible.

man shot at least once in the leg. 23-year-old anquan gambrell died later at a hospital. right now, authorities aren't talking about a suspect. if you know anything about this, call crime stoppers at 23-crime. tonight, the search continues for adriel garnett, in connection with a deadly shooting. woodruff police say the shooting happened early saturday morning, and that garnett may be headed to the charleston area. again, if you can help find this man adriel garnett, you should , call crimestoppers. 23-crime. carol: newberry county deputies are offering a seminar about protecting yourself from scam phone calls. deputies said the latest scam they've seen is a call claiming the victim owes government fees and taxes, or they will face court or jail time. the presentation will happen tomorrow at 7:00, at the newberry county sheriff's office. deputies will discuss the different types of identity theft and steps to protect yourself, an overview of security freezes and fraud alerts, popular scams, and tips to avoid becoming a victim. crews exploded nearly 120 pounds of dynamite this morning near

this could provide for some slick roadways tomorrow evening. this goes until 6:00 p.m.. asheville northbound are marshall, towards haywood and jackson counties, we could see about an inch, maybe two, through the day tomorrow. looking ahead through thursday at 7:00 a.m., starting tomorrow at 6:00 going through thursday, we will see more snow. it will be confined to the tennessee border counties, madison county, mitchell, yancey county, towards portions of slain county of the northern half of jackson county. western carolina university, human -- you are included in that. a couple inches of additional source -- snowfall possible. 38 in asheville, 40 in hendersonville, 30 eight in anderson. temperatures tonight will drop a few degrees. 34 by 7:00 a.m. in greenville, cloudy skies will take over. flurries begin to develop in the southwestern portions of the mountains, like franklin and andrews.

here and the different lobes of energy that will move into our area and give the mountains a good chance for snowfall. look at this coastal low, a monster right here. heavy rainfall on the outer banks. a little bit of circulation right there. just a coastal storm, nothing tropical. it provided a few wet snowflakes towards myrtle beach and wilmington. the future plus shows that is moving out to sea and our attention will move towards the northwest. snow showers in the mountains tomorrow afternoon. cold air moves through, and we will see patchy scattered snow through the afternoon and evening. it starts to crank up for asheville northbound, north of i-40. that area will see the best chance for snow. it continues heavily across the tennessee border counties. 3-6 inches possible. the models show for the upstate maybe a dusting. i think that is optimistic.

asheville area, 1-3 inches with higher amounts being closer towards asheville. from the north carolina line northbound, as you get closer from hendersonville to brevard to marion, 0-3 inches of snow. three will be closer to asheville, zero seeing snowfall with none accumulating further south towards black rock. the for-day plus, 48 degrees headed through the day tomorrow with rain showers, maybe flurries late in the day. a few flurries possible tuesday morning. again, not a big deal for the upstate. for the mountains, a light at event, 1-3 inches. enough to make the roads slick for a few days. then, temperatures get rigid headed into the middle of the work week. highs in the upper 30's to around 40. for the mountains, a high of 29 on wednesday. michael: come on. chris: i know. next weekend, back to 50 with sunshine. michael: and the next week, we could be back to snow.

wouldn't be able to hear a thing i said. but i will tell you what, after that loss in the super bowl, it got quiet asked. there are still people here at the all-american pub and hot talk go a few blocks away. it was a disappointing turnout for super bowl fans in charlotte . the hometown team went all the way to the super bowl, but it was not the ending they were so looking for. here is the inside of the all-american pub during the game. you can see the ebb and flow, excited people, worried people as things changed. then, back-and-forth and so on. it was that way all night long. at the end of the game, people kept their heads up and said, this is the start of big things for the panthers. >> here, we have hundreds of people. love the panthers.
