falls, a few flurries in anderson and pendleton earlier. caesars head, off and on snow showers. most areas in the northern and central mountains, the higher elevations of the mountains of north carolina have had half a foot of snow. these flurries are mainly in the upstate. snow showers in the mountains. 18 degrees in boone, 36 in spartanburg am a 30 six in greenville and anderson with snow flurries continuing. we may see a brief snow shower in the upstate, just a trace of snow. advisories, in the mountains. western north carolina, winter weather advisory continues for the mountains and along the tennessee line in east tennessee, a winter storm warning. the west facing slopes could see lots of snow. winter weather advisory from clayton to north of atlanta in northeast georgia. atlanta has had snow. when the system goes by, we are talking about dangerously cold wind chills.

western north carolina and the north georgia mountains. windchill's could get as low as 15 degrees below zero. this goes until noon tomorrow, but the wind advisory will be reissued tomorrow night running until noon on thursday. cold across the area. dangerously cold. i will show you the numbers later on. now back to you. gabrielle: some areas of the western north carolina mountains have deep snow. others are bracing for dangerously low temperatures. live and local in hendersonville. mike? mike: i have on two pairs of gloves if that tells you anything. the later it gets, the colder it gets. the focus is on people who may not have heat or a place to live. >> we just want to make sure that people are safe. mike: shelters in asheville are operating on what's called "code purple," because the temperature is below 32 degrees. that means they're making room for more people. >> we're sleeping men in our

and even into our dining room area. mike: on a regular day, the western carolina rescue ministry has room for 140 men, women, and children. last night, under code purple, they kept 162 people warm. the western carolina rescue ministry is the largest shelter in the city of asheville. it's growing right now, to make sure there are enough beds for everyone. work should be done, and the new sleep spaces should be ready, before this winter is over. until then, they're inviting in as many people as possible. >> our goal, along with the other shelters, along with the other agencies, along with the city of asheville and the police department, we've all made a commitment that we don't want anyone to freeze on the streets of asheville. mike: this afternoon, we talked with the man in charge of a shelter in hendersonville. he says he is expecting even

those who have a home, but can't afford to keep it warm. the shelters are stocking up on supplies, blankets, making room for extra space and making sure they have extra food for the increase. mike mccormick, wyff news 4, live in downtown hendersonville. nigel: thanks, mike. when this winter weather hits, schools have to make the decision to close, delay, or stay open. gabrielle: wyff news 4's aly myles headed to buncombe county, where the decision affects thousands. aly: as our meteorologists will tell you, even when the roads look fine here, just a few miles over, it could be a totally different situation. >> we started studying things at 4:00 a.m., and there was a lot of ifs, whats, and what's going to happen? and today, it looks like we'll be able to go with the two-hour delay. aly: asheville city schools has a smaller district than buncombe county, but that doesn't mean their staff is local. >> we have a much smaller area, but at the same time, much of our staff lives in madison county or haywood county or whatever, so we took that into

three, 4, 0, 7. nigel: a former greenville county deputy will avoid prison time after pleading guilty to misconduct. david hayes was asked -- accused of taking bribes and tipping off an illegal gambling operator about upcoming raids by law enforcement. hays pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. the judge sentenced him to time served. in exchange, prosecutors dropped a felony charge of misconduct in office. >> i would call it just making bad decisions. he got into financial pressure. he made the wrong decisions. he got into bed with the wrong people. nigel: both hays and former

july 2014, after an fbi investigation. smith pleaded guilty in december. he was put on probation, and banned from law enforcement. gabrielle: the proposal to close three pickens county elementary schools was just approved, 3-1, by the facilities committee. it will now go before the full board for a vote, the plan would send 600 students to dacusville elementary and middle, and also hagood and pickens elementary schools. the school district says the plan would save millions. before the full board votes, there will be three public input meetings with district officials tomorrow at 4:30 p.m., at a.r. lewis, holly springs, and ambler elementary schools. the full board is expected to vote on this proposal a week from today. nigel: right now, greenville water is warning customers of a phone scam. the customer service department ys they've gotten numerous reports from customers, saying they are getting calls from someone claiming to be a water employee. the person tells callers they are late on their payments, and looks for a way to get money from you. greenville water says they never
