anderson, most of the upstate. 33 in toccoa. look at the cold air coming in. 28 in gainesville. that is not the windchill. as far as advisories, warnings, watches, none outside the mountains. just in the mountains overnight tonight, a winter weather advisory continues in western north carolina and north georgia all the way down into northern suburbs of atlanta, atlanta has had larry's off and on during the day today. dangerous wind chills in north georgia, and western north carolina, starting overnight tonight until noon tomorrow. then, it will be reissued at 7:00 tomorrow evening and run through thursday morning. a dangerous situation, not just this week but into the weekend. then, it gets interesting next week. now back to you. michael: in the mountains of western north carolina right now, the focus is making sure people have protection from the dangerous cold. carol: wyff news 4's mike mccormick is live and local in hendersonville. mike? mike: shelters across the mountains aren't just expecting to see the homeless this week.

who have a home, but no way to keep it warm. from a dusting off i-26 in buncombe county, to frigid flying flurries in downtown asheville, the weather feels as bone-chilling as it looks. >> everybody needs to be prayed for when they're out there, because you could freeze to death if you're not prepared. mike: darren dumont says he's proof of the ways shelters can save lives. >> to have a place to where you can just come and get out of the cold, even if you don't get a bed, because there's too many people, and the overflow, you have to sleep in the chapel. just to be on that floor for a couple of nights, to get out of all that mess, it is a big-time blessing. mike: he once relied on the western carolina rescue ministry in asheville. right now, all shelters in the city are running on code purple. that means making extra room, because the temperature is below 32 degrees. >> we have cots, and we have mats. if we run out of cots, and we run out of mats, we'll put out blankets. we just want to get people in out of the cold.

shelter keeps 140 men, women, and children warm. last night, under code purple, they took in 162 people. an expansion is underway. it's not ready for beds just yet. >> our desire is that we don't want anyone to freeze. mike: their work doesn't just stop with warm beds and meals. the ministry helps the people here with counseling and job searching. in fact, darren dumont now works here. but he never forgets the way he got here. >> pray for the people that are out there. mike: right now, many shelters or even inviting people inside during the day, during the hours when the shelters would normally be closed. mike mccormick, wyff news 4, live in hendersonville. carol: more than a dozen schools in western north carolina had either a two-hour delay or closed today, because of the wintry weather. buncombe county says they decided to close because it would be unsafe for buses or student drivers to travel on icy roads. asheville city schools had a two hour delay today for the same reason.

missed three days of school. they'll make up one on what would have been an optional work day in may. they'll extend two half days that would have been early release, and they will make up another one at the end of the school year. they say they don't want anyone taking the chance, because safety for staff and students comes first. >> we take safety seriously. that is always first. that was a factor this morning with our staff, more than the people who live in town. >> it's a little inconvenient, but it is safer for kids of the buses, we have to do what we have to do. carol: glazener also pointed out, a snow storm two years ago stranded thousands of students in raleigh and atlanta at their schools. remember, we've got an updated list of school closings and delays on the wyff four mobile app. you can download it for free from your app store. michael: back in the upstate a , burglary in greenville county led to the search for four suspects, and three schools and it up on lockdown as a

myra ruiz has scary moments for parents and others. myra: there may have been some scary moments for parents when they learned that southside high and two other schools were on lockdown, as deputies searched for three suspect in the area. >> i prayed that no one ran up into a school and hurt the kids. myra: charles gamble says an email from the greenville county school district let him know that his daughter's school, southside high, was on lockdown. >> i am glad we have those things in place. myra: thomas kearns elementary was also on lockdown, along with the mt anderson support center for an hour and a half. , investigators say a burglary at a home on oak hill drive led to the search for four suspects in a white bmw suv. the driver got away, the deputies arrested three suspects who left the vehicle and ran off. >> i am glad you are looking for them, and they will most likely find the fourth one. myra: myra ruiz, the wife of news four, greenville county. carol: an update now to a story we brought you last week. anderson county deputies say no

case. you may remember two-year-old boxer "amara", anderson county paws is helping in her recovery after she was shot in the head, and blinded. deputies say they found her previous owner, who told them the dog had been aggressive toward the family, so they decided to put her down. but they didn't realize her euthanasia was unsuccessful, until they saw her on the news. a magistrate decided there would be no criminal charges. michael: a former greenville county deputy will avoid prison time, after pleading guilty to misconduct in office. former sergeant david hays stands accused of taking bribes for tips about possible gambling raids. he spent eight days in jail after he got arrested. the judge today send it him -- sentenced him to time served. both hays and former deputy shea smith were fired in july 2014 after an fbi investigation. smith pleaded guilty in december. he was put on probation and banned from law enforcement. carol: polls close in less than one hour, in new hampshire. all day long, candidates have been making a final push for votes. on the republican side, poll after poll has donald trump in

four-person race for second place. with marco rubio, ted cruz, jeb bush and john kasich. on the democratic side, polls have bernie sanders in a double digit lead. that hillary clinton is closing in, narrowing the gap. >> at 7:00, 8:00 on tuesday, they're going to get a phone call, have you voted yet? you haven't voted yet? do you need a ride? >> them they are election, we had 3000. i that we will have 6000. carol: tomorrow, the candidates start making their way to south carolina, for the first in the south primary. the gop primary is february 20th, and the democratic primary is one week later on the 27th. >> you see the moral and political laws of our nation our -- our crumbling. michael: franklin graham with a message for voters. john: a live shot looking down clemson boulevard. you can see the streets from the clouds.

light snow showersan estimated one-thousand school carol: an estimated 1000 schoolchildren in anderson county are at risk of going hungry on the weekends. michael: but an organization is working to make sure their bellies are full, and their minds are open to learning, when they come back to school on monday. carol: wyff news 4's mandy gaither has more on what's being done, and how you can help. mandy: it's a plastic bag with cereal, milk, juice and snacks. but to a hungry child, these weekend snack packs mean so much more. >> you know, that's going to fill up a little belly. mandy: at anderson's golden harvest food bank warehouse, hundreds of united way

hours, making sure 1,000 children in 24 anderson-area schools don't go hungry. >> we know that these children are already on free and reduced lunch, but they have a meal gap from friday to monday, and we're trying to fill that. mandy: here, volunteers have a tangible way of helping students they've never met. >> i come for the good feeling. mandy: some help deliver these boxes to the schools, which discreetly hand them out to those in need. others fill the bags. >> i think, it just breaks my heart to think a child cannot have something to eat on the weekend, and it makes them sharper. when they have food, and they're well-nourished, then they can break the cycle of poverty. mandy: by arming themselves with knowledge. but before they can feed their minds, these children need to feed their bodies. mandy gaither, wyff news 4, in anderson county. michael: the united way of
