who have a home, but no way to keep it warm. from a dusting off i-26 in buncombe county, to frigid flying flurries in downtown asheville, the weather feels as bone-chilling as it looks. >> everybody needs to be prayed for when they're out there, because you could freeze to death if you're not prepared. mike: darren dumont says he's proof of the ways shelters can save lives. >> to have a place to where you can just come and get out of the cold, even if you don't get a bed, because there's too many people, and the overflow, you have to sleep in the chapel. just to be on that floor for a couple of nights, to get out of all that mess, it is a big-time blessing. mike: he once relied on the western carolina rescue ministry in asheville. right now, all shelters in the city are running on code purple. that means making extra room, because the temperature is below 32 degrees. >> we have cots, and we have mats. if we run out of cots, and we run out of mats, we'll put out blankets. we just want to get people in out of the cold.

shelter keeps 140 men, women, and children warm. last night, under code purple, they took in 162 people. an expansion is underway. it's not ready for beds just yet. >> our desire is that we don't want anyone to freeze. mike: their work doesn't just stop with warm beds and meals. the ministry helps the people here with counseling and job searching. in fact, darren dumont now works here. but he never forgets the way he got here. >> pray for the people that are out there. mike: right now, many shelters or even inviting people inside during the day, during the hours when the shelters would normally be closed. mike mccormick, wyff news 4, live in hendersonville. carol: more than a dozen schools in western north carolina had either a two-hour delay or closed today, because of the wintry weather. buncombe county says they decided to close because it would be unsafe for buses or student drivers to travel on icy roads. asheville city schools had a two hour delay today for the same reason.
