as we look at from our woodruff road skycam, no precipitation showing in the upstate, but we expect it late morning into the afternoon. we have a taxi weather covers going on this morning. we will go to meteorologist chris justus in just a minute. as we take a look at the woodruff road skycam, nothing upstate. the mountains of north carolina getting some snow. have your snow where it shows blue on the screen. knoxville is getting heavier snow. the entire area under an advisory of some sort. freezing rain advisories for the upstate. aviation advisories for greenville and spartanburg so check on your flights. winter storm watches out for the mountains of north carolina. let's go to chris and get an

chris: we are watching for the west. the air is way too dry. we are watching this slug of alabama. it changes from rain to freezing rain. that is the concern today. it is the freezing rain. impacted. there is going to be a wedge of cold air that sets up about like that. the low pressure system that warms to the south the day, instead of tracking to the mountains will now move south of the wedge boundary of cold air. it is these areas. that does not change the timing, but it changes the impact for the areas that are going to the an impact -- to see an impact. it is bringing in cold air and dry air. we have moisture trying to

the cold air will set up in these areas like a v. freezing drizzle starting to show up by midmorning, but it is this afternoon the heaviest stuff starts to arrive. the higher impact areas in the foothills and the northern part of the upstate will see a higher impact than previously anticipated due to the low tracking shout. i will show you them that -- tracking south. i will show you that coming up. allyson: dot crews are prepping roads for a messy 24 hours. geoff: wyff news 4's aly myles joins us live from the interstate in spartanburg county with more. aly: we are just north of the 85-26 interchange. the roads are completely dry right now but they are not expecting that later. when this comes down later this

in this area. this will be the tricky spot when you need to be careful because they are expecting ice. take a look at this video. this is from last time before the storm. the department of transportation was at it again. this weekend, pre-treating all roads in greenville, spartanburg, and other counties north of i-85. crews will work in 12 hour shifts to monitor conditions. in counties like laurens, anderson, and areas south of i-85, crews were working on treating interstates, bridges, and known trouble spots. they have been watching conditions there overnight. it is not coming down yes, but it is extremely cold out this morning. i have multiple layers on. i suggest you do the same because we are below freezing, and it is very cold area. aly myles, wyff news 4, live in spartanburg county. allyson: don't forget. when bad weather hits, you can turn to the wyff 4 mobile app. you can keep an eye on the weather, track the storm, and get the latest on school closings and alerts.

commitment 2016 this morning. dr. ben carson will hold an event in the upstate. he's set to be at the spartanburg marriott at 7:00 tonight following his visit to lancaster in the afternoon. covering also our commitment 2016 news, gop presidential candidate donald trump is expected to be in the upstate this evening. he will be holding a rally at the t.d. convention center. doors open at 5:00, ananthe event starts at 7:00. senator marco rubio will also be in the palmetto state today. allyson: the republican presidential hopeful started his week with the largest crowd yet to attend a rubio event in south carolina. more than 2,000 people attended his town hall meeting sunday at easley high school. rubio's staff says there was a spike in interest after saturday night's debate in greenville. he told the audience that he he doesn't believe president obama should appoint a new supreme court justice after antonin scalia's recent death. people of all ages came out to hear rubio speak. >> why do you like marco rubio? >> his passion and his understanding of the responsibilities as a president. >> he gets thrown around a lot

think he has more of a heart for immigrants, but he wants to be able to make it a way for them to come in legally. allyson: rubio will make appearances today in rock hill, florence, and columbia. geoff: also former florida , governor jeb bush will be holding an event in the low country. his campaign rally at the north charleston coliseum is 6:00 begins at 6:00 tonight. former president george w. bush is expected make an appearance at the rally to stump for his brother. the south carolina gop presidential primary of course coming up this weekend. allyson: it's on saturday, february 20. the democratic primary comes a week later on february 27. a look behind us at our peace the woodruff road skycam. it is clear on the roadways. what can we expect? dale: it is coming later this morning and into the afternoon. that is when we start to see precipitation impacting the upstate. no problems for your morning commute, but keep an eye on it

it is interesting, the other day on friday when we had the snow event that came through quickly, it covered wofford college, especially gives field and the campus -- gibbs field and the campus area. what is falling in western north carolina will hang around for a while. therefore, it cannot significant -- can mount up significantly in higher elevations. 32 in abbeville. let's check on a few other communities in the southern piedmont. laurens below freezing. 31 in greenwood. a cold beginning to the day. temperatures will struggle to get above freezing later tonight. all the wintry type precipitation we will see today and this evening changes over to rain tonight and into half of tomorrow.

the winter weather. let's go to chris justus to get an update on what we can expect from this system coming through. dale: chris: two things breaking from the national weather service. the aviation warning, so that will be a concern if you have flights taking off this morning. you want to check to make sure it is still on schedule. they have extended the freezing advisory until 7:00 p.m. tonight. changing the to go with deterrence because it is arriving later. the longer duration o othe cold air is in place. i would not be surprised to see that extended until 10:00 or 11:00 tonight. this moisture moving into northern alabama will move into georgia. that will moisten up the atmosphere. it is too dry for anything to hit the ground right now. taking a look at where we are

live super doppler 4 hd over the past six hours, you can see some precipitation from tennessee getting into slane county -- sw ain county and graham county. cold temperatures from teens and 20's and 30's across north 30's in the upstate. greenville currently at 27. spartanburg at 28. tigerville at 26. simpsonville and fountain in the upper 20 range. it will not climb much today. it may reach mid 30's later on this evening. today changes over to rain later tonight, and we will get heavy rain overnight tonight into half of tuesday. take the wind and it feels like 19 in greenville and spartanburg.

dress warmly for the day. quite a bunch of colors showing up on our screen. the think area is freezing rain advisories. aviation advisories for greenville and spartanburg because of the potential of freezing rain. winter storm watches in blue for the mountains of south carolina and akoni and pickens county and across the western north carolina, a winter storm watch continues as well. winter weather advisory's, winter storm warnings for the higher elevations. two to six inches of snow before it is all said and done. some spots along the tennessee-north carolina border getting slippery this morning. of the precipitation will be in the mountains. late morning, we start to see a couple of spots with freezing rain ands sleet showing up.

it is still freezing rain into 7:00. could be icy buildup on some roads. look at the heavy rain after midnight through the early morning hours tomorrow. the sun is back up tomorrow afternoon. sunny weather will set up shop and be with us tuesday afternoon, wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, sunday looking out of here. : blinking the east coast from the big high in canada. whatever falls starting late morning into the afternoon has the potential to stick. later this evening, temperatures will climb above the freezing mark as it changes to rain in asheville. warming up nicely this weekend.

imagine you are this guy, and it is cold outside. it is 49 degrees in the water. would you jump in there? geoff: for a good cause. charity pennies for preemies. the charity was started by t.l. hanna student grace cromer, who is a triplet, and along with her two brothers, was born at just 27 weeks. there were complications, but they are now healthy teenagers, and grace's charity is helping support families with preemies and special needs. well done, grace. allyson: geoff: participated as well. covering the nation now. scores of drivers slid their way along the highway at the tennessee-kentucky border. snow started falling around 2:00 yesterday afternoon in jellico and quickly accumulated along interstate 75. the near-whiteout conditions stranded some drivers and forced others to take early exits. some drivers tried to push through the conditions at a slow-going pace. plows were out working to clear the roads and make them passable. geoff: take a look here. intense snow and terrible visibility played a part in a fatal pileup involving at least

pennsylvania. state police said least three people died in the pileup on interstate 78 in lebanon county. more than 70 people were injured. take a look at this photo here. these are ice chunks floating in lake michigan along the banks of the belmont harbor. imagine how cold it must be for ice chunks like that to form. the alleged jewel thief behind a string of robberies across the southeast is facing new charges now. 27-year-old abigail kemp is now charged with robbery and using a gun while committing a crime in the federal district in south carolina. the charges are connected to a south carolina robbery where she is accused of pulling out a gun, zip-tying employees, and stealing almost $1 million in jewels. she was already facing similar charges in both georgia and florida. u.s. attorneys have said she could also end up facing charges
