john: here is a shot of the college in spartanburg. the camera bouncing around because of the strong, gusty winds, in fact across eastern georgia. the pressure gradient between the storm system and the high pressure to our southwest, 43 mile-per-hour wind is in downtown greenville. in spartanburg and in anderson, 46 mile-per-hour wind gusts. sustained wind of 25 to 30 miles per hour. asheville, gusts of 41 miles per hour at the regional airport. we are talking of a high wind warning that will continue until the top of the hour at 7:00, and then from 7:00 until midnight, it goes from high wind downward to a wind advisory, but we're still even talking wind gusts. probably in the upstate to 35

it will likely change over to snow showers and continue into friday morning. a winter weather advisory, forecasting one to four plus inches of snow. the higher elevations, the closer you get to the tennessee live, and the west facing slopes. the farther you go, like in southeastern buncombe county, you might see some. even in hendersonville. you may see a rain shower as we go through the next hours. all of our severe weather has shifted off to the east. these are the tornado watch boxes. these are actually tornado warnings, and we had one for number 10. north carolina. south carolina, it looks like you were all clear. these are racing off to the northeast at 55 to 75 miles per hour.

these red boxes are all tornado warnings. right now, some very heavy thunderstorms. no rotation there, but this one is moving into virginia, so a dangerous situation to our east and into virginia. changing over into snow showers already in the mountains of carolina and north georgia. over half an inch of rain in greenville. almost half an inch in spartanburg. we quickly reached 70 degrees when we broke down that ridge of cool air. we reached the record set back in 1982. it warmed up nicely. this is far from the record high of 77 degrees, so the temperature looks like this outside right now. we are talking about chilly temperatures coming in from the northwest, 43 in franklin, 49 in andrews, still there is strong wind. the five in columbia, milder

headquarters in new york, this is "nbc nightly news" with lester holt. good evening. the death toll has risen even higher today from that violent storm system that tore through the south, and it's on the move tonight. as we start here, cities from northern carolina up to the d.c. area under the threat of tornadoes. at least four more people were killed this afternoon, some in waverly, virginia, where there's been significant damage from an apparent tornado. at least seven people have died from this time yesterday. right now at least ten states are at risk for severe weather with the highest tornado risk this evening. nbc's miguel almaguer reports from the storm zone. >> reporter: tonight this is what they fear, funnel clouds, possible tornadoes, a weather system still packing pounding rain and whipping winds with. with at least four dead today there's another night of dangerous weather still ahead. >> look at that. oh, my god >> reporter: forecast calls for 70-mile-an-hour winds.
