geoff: the wind was something yesterday. they battered our area and took down power lines and disable traffic lights. allyson: wyff news 4's aly myles with a look at some of the damage live from west main street in spartanburg. aly: good morning. we are live on south main street in spartanburg. much less windy but extremely cold. the wind is still blowing a little bit. behind me, you can see one of the buildings that suffer damages from yesterday. there were many downed trees, power lines and that roof completely crumpled from that wind once it blew off. take a look at this video from yesterday in spartanburg. a limb fell on a moving car's windshield and it fell on an suv. both drivers were ok. the wind ripped off the roof of a building and the three businesses were inside the it. they were open at the same time and an insurance agent who ensures the building witness the destruction. >> sitting at the stop sign, all

the roof and i watched it blow off and then a power line disconnected and sparks were jumping everywhere. aly: fallout in the upstate from traffic lights the out. -- lights being out. they say the traffic lights are not working with two vehicles collided. two cyclists and a group got hit by a car and no one was hurt. aly myles live in spartanburg. ,allyson: t life. at the spartanburg airport, there were issues with an airplane. they hit the pole while taxing. the flight to atlanta was set to take out when the pilot was hold to hold off because of the weather. it made it back to the gate and nobody was injured.

behalf of his wife. he'll tour the golden strip career center at 2:00 this afternoon in mauldin. he's also scheduled to attend a get out to vote rally in spartanburg. that's at 4:30 at the g.b. hodge athletic center at usc upstate. geoff: hillary clinton and bernie sanders have no scheduled trips north of columbia before the primary. while they were recently in south carolina, they've not made a habit of campaigning here. since april of last year, they've made less than 30 visits to south carolina, with just six to the upstate. compare that to gop candidates still in the race who have visited the upstate nearly 70 times. one political analyst tells us it's because the upstate has few democrats. if you are uploading in saturday's primary in south carolina, you will see a third candidate on the ballot. chicago businessman willie wilson held a town hall meeting last night at the phillis wheatley community center in greenville. wilson spoke and answered questions from a crowd of 150. wilson says part of the reason

15 to 30 plus mile per hour wind blowing and that makes it feel like low 30's from laurens to spartanburg. spartanburg feels like freezing. boone feels like 14. a cold and windy day because of that same big load that is tracking in from the ohio valley area to the northeast, so cold temperatures for the next couple of days and then we will see it sunday. 50 24 an upstate high today, and the mountains will struggle to get to low 40's at best. as we look ahead, tomorrow, temperatures cold. i sunday, upper 50's to low 60's and that trend continues to the middle of next week. allyson: taking a look at the roads on i-85 around dantzler road. be careful in the southbound lanes.

a storm yesterday actually blowing down debris on a lot of roads, so you will want to be careful as you head out the door. bryson city at newfound gap road between gatlinburg and cherokee, it has been closed. icy conditions around the asheville area. anderson county, looking at an accident on ballard road and cherokee road with injuries. it is currently in the road so watch out. travel times on the interstate, despite icy conditions, 26 and 40 and the smooth speed limit drive. 43 minutes to the tennessee north carolina line from 26. i-385 and woodruff road. i believe we have tom williams with duke energy on the phone to talk about some of the power outages. good morning. tom: good morning. how are you?

over 3400. tom: that is correct. we made great progress overnight. we had a peek number of 120,000 outages and we will check that out to the storm but we knocked overnight. we are down to a total of about 55,000 outages. that is the good news. the relatively small number for the company is biggest duke. the bad news, so many individual bad news, 2600 individual outages, so many are severe outages that will take time to to large trees that are down. it was a wind storm that hit the north and south carolina service territory we have, so that is a bit unusual. normally, we have more localized storms and we can concentrate our cruise, but we will be out at daylight and working as fast as we can to get outages restored and we asked people to be as patient as possible.

allyson: to spartanburg now, where a teen's celebrating her birthday by giving back. this is the third year 14-year-old ginger dailey presented all of her birthday money, $1500, to the gibbs cancer center. it's in memory of her grandfather. >> me and my papa were really close, and three years ago, he passed away from cancer, so i wanted to make a donation to other people to help treat them. allyson: the funds will go toward spartanburg regional's cancer special needs fund. that helps pay for medicine, transportation, and other unexpected expenses for cancer patients. geoff: great to see a young person with a big heart. allyson: that is such a need when you have a sick person in

as you saw earlier, travel times on the interstate looking pretty good for thursday morning. take a look at i happen to 85 and haywood road. i believe we have tom williams on the phone, he is here to talk about power outages. good morning, tom. tom: good morning, how are you? allyson: i'm doing good. you told us some of these are pretty severe and could take into the weekend. tom: we are hoping that is not the case but it could be the case. there are about 26 hundred individual outages across north and south carolina. a little over 3000 in greenville and spartanburg counties. across south carolina, about 9000 to 10,000 not end in north carolina, about 37,000. we have really knocked these outages down significantly. at the peak of the storm, it was

overnight, we got about 50,000 outages back on so we will be hitting the ground running to get folks back on. allyson: reducing the wind yesterday was the major cause? tom: i think it is a combination of the wind in the wet ground. tremendous trees have been blown down in many neighborhoods, so those things typically take a while to clean it up and they do significant damage and they often take down a series of poles and it takes a while to get back up. also, a lot of backyards outages that may affect one of two different homes. those will be kind of focused on toward the end of the storm, so as a knock down the numbers, we will focus on the smaller outages that duke typically takes longer to fix. good news is we will have more folks out there doing the work. allyson: we want to remind everyone not to approach a downed power line. you can report that to duke energy.
