yeah, that and a lot more from the gop debate in houston, coming up. >> he yelled "hey" and them "boom". allyson: new information overnight in a deadly shooting in kansas. hear from witnesses and the sheriff who calls his deputy a hero. geoff: good morning. i'm geoff hart. allyson: and i'm allyson powell the wind in the carolinas has been so damaging. the video behind us is from oxford, north carolina. that's near the virgina state lines. you can see that tree on the house there. many communities are cleaning up after the storm. geoff: we still have school closings and delays this morning. those are running along the ticker on the bottom of your screen. allyson: dale, more wind today? dale: we can still see some flurries along the north carolina and tennessee border.

meanwhile, for the upstate it will be just above freezing. 34 degrees in greenville and mostly clear. let's look at the live super doppler 4 hd. we can see some spots in haywood and madison county getting some flurries. that winter weather advisory continues through 7:00 a.m. watch out for slippery spots on mountain roads. let the sun break up the ice left behind. 31 in asheville. 32 in franklin and hendersonville. upper 20's right now in boone. it is just above freezing in many of the higher elevations of northern -- of north carolina. we have 5-10 mile-per-hour winds in the upstate. the makes it feel like 28 in laurens and 12-15 from boone to hendersonville. afternoon highs today will reach low 50's in the upstate.

top the 40 mark later this afternoon. we have a warm-up coming by the weekend. allyson: thank you, they'll. any people across the carolinas are still without power this morning. crews have been working around the clock to restore the outages. geoff: the majority of them are back on in our area. in fact, spartanburg county has the most outages. duke reports fewer than 500 without power. greenville county a little over 100 people without power. wyff news 4's aly myles is live and local in greenville with some other concerns officials are having following the severe weather. aly: we are out here on west washington street. it has been shut down since wednesday night. we are a block away from the post office. i want to show you why it is shut down. you can see that utility pole leaning. both poles and the power lines will need to be replaced as a result of those strong winds.

extent of the damage, it is tanking longer to restore. take a look at this video from sky 4. this is our paris mountain skycam. engineers will be working to get it back up and running. back on washington street, police say the roads will reopen once repairs have been made. right now, we have no word on when that will be completed. geoff: thank you. four people are dead and 14 others are heard after a mass shooting in south-central kansas. authorities say an excel industries worker stole a vehicle and shot people in the street and parking lot. >> he was already looking at him. he yelled and entered the building. >> inside the building he shot a total of 15 people. four were killed, including himself.

democratic primary, time is running out. you have until 5:00 p.m. today. election offices will not stay open late. geoff: we have had a couple breezy days. dale: the mountains will be very windy. the upstate today, will see 5-10 mile-per-hour winds. 36 degrees with a northwest breeze at 12 miles per hour in spartanburg. we have 20 mile-per-hour winds in the mountains. that is where the coldest temperatures are too. we have icy spots on mountain roads. the winter weather advisory continues until 7:00 a.m. for counties along the tennessee and north carolina border. we can see fresh snow falling in haywood and madison counties. we could see some icy spots on mountain roads. watch out for black ice. temperatures are at or below freezing in the mountains. hendersonville, 32.

let's check on a few of the higher elevation communities. we can see 28 degrees in marshall. brevard, 31 degrees. anything that melted yesterday on the roads will be ice this morning. in the upstate, we can see anywhere from 34 degrees to 39 degrees this morning. that will climb back to the low 50's. we have 20 mile-per-hour winds in hendersonville and asheville. we have 8-10 mile-per-hour winds in the upstate. any breeze makes it feel colder. for tomorrow, we will see highs better the mountains, reaching 46. by sunday, we have a nice turnaround. we get into the upper 50's and low 60's for both the upstate and mountains. that will continue into the first of next week. geoff: flames engulf a historic

geoff: 4:42 on this friday morning. a bill to stop coal ash from being dumped in pickens county has been approved, now it's on it's way to governor haley for her signature. yesterday, senators approved a house bill that prevents a landfill from being built in liberty. there were plans by a north carolina company to dump coal ash. the bill specifies that coal ash can only be dumped in class three landfills. the proposed landfill in liberty was going to be a class two landfill, which does not qualify for coal ash disposal. senator larry martin says the bill is, quote, a big win for the people of pickens county. allyson: while debates continue over how to pay for road repairs in south carolina, the house committee approved a spending plan yesterday that provides 287 million dollars in road funding. the plan sets aside 130 million dollars for tax relief and $400 million for public education. the bill now goes to the full house, which will begin debate on the proposal month. geoff: president obama has

the united states district court carolina. both of them have upstate ties. one is donald beatty. on the south carolina supreme court since 2007. at one point, he was a partner at a law firm in spartanburg. the other is donald coggins jr. he is a lawyer. coggins jr works also worked for a law firm in spartanburg. he also serves as a member of the south carolina commission on lawyer conduct. texting and driving. it's against the law. students are getting the opportunity to learn why outside the classroom. dale: the weekend is shaping up pretty good. your heart loves omega-3s. but the omega-3s in fish oil differ from megared krill oil. unlike fish oil, megared is easily absorbed by your body.

that winter weather advisory is in effect until 7:00 a.m. this morning. it is windy in the mountains, not quite as bad in the upstate. it will be a little breeze, however. 34 in greenville, 37 in anderson. communities. westminster, 39. pickens is a little cooler at 36. piedmont, 31 degrees. a chilly beginning to the day. the mountains are in the upper 20's and lower 30's, accentuated by that wind over 22 miles an hour in asheville, 24 miles an hour in boone. across the upstate, we will see 5-10 mile-per-hour winds. it does make it feel like 29 degrees from spartanburg to greenwood. and it feels like it is in the teens from hendersonville to asheville. we still have a few flurries left from that big storm that

now it is still creating some snow from the mountain range up into the northeast. temperatures around the country we are going to see a rebound over the weekend by sunday. much better temperatures will be coming to our area. here is what the future plus picks up this morning. we have flurries until about 9:00. that tapers off by noon. temperatures will then be above that in the days ahead. we will get into the 60's i sunday. 53, that is what we got up to yesterday and that is the expected high for the upstate. the mountains will top the 40 mark by 4:00. looking at tomorrow, we have temperatures from 46 in the mountains to 54 in the upstate. sunday brings us perfect weather for the outdoors.

mountains and low 60's in the upstate. that continues into the first of next week. allyson: thank you, dale. today is the deadline for apple to respond to the department of justice's court order issued over the phone belonging to one of the san bernardino terrorists. if the order stands up to legal challenges, apple would be forced to create a new customized ios firmware that would remove the passcode lock out on the iphone. last week, apple reiterated its commitment to privacy and that it has no connection to what data may exist on the phone. federal authorities want apple the investigation. geoff: a psychotherapist testifies that sportscaster erin andrews was, quote, anxious and depressed after the man who stalked her and posted secretly was let out of prison. andrews is suing her stalker, michael david barrett, and the owner of the nashville marriott at vanderbilt university for 75 million dollars. andrews' lawyers allege hotel management was negligent , allowing barrett to book the room next to her after he

staying in from the staff. allyson: flames engulfed a historic rhode island home, almost exactly 100-years after another massive fire at the estate. built between 1870 and 1880 , mayfield cottage was destroyed in a 1916 fire that left few rooms standing. the property was sold to owners who built a new house in its place called stonor lodge. a century later flames once again shot through the roof of the home. geoff: texting and driving is against the law and some high school students got the opportunity to learn why outside the classroom. more than 200 crescent high school students got to see how dangerous it can be. they watched a video and put on goggles that ushered them into virtual reality. many said they did not realize how hard it would be. >> it was really hard. i would never text and drive or drink and drive. >> it definitely showed us like,

this can happen any day. geoff: it is an offshoot of the alive at 25 program at crescent high. before students can park on campus they must first go through the national safety council's four and a half hour class on defensive driving. allyson: a pizza kitchen on wheels helped the spartanburg anniversary. little caesars pulled up and baked 120 pizzas in the parking lot yesterday. each guest also got a salad, the spartanburg soup kitchen started in 1982 at the second presbyterian church. we soup kitchen -- the soup kitchen is open seven days a week. >> it makes me emotional sometimes. last week we had a couple who arrived her hungry and scared. they had come from another county. course, we were through eating, but we were able to provide a meal for them. that's what makes it so wonderful. allyson: a woman who has been eating at the soup kitchen for

died if the charity had not been there for her. in greenville, the community honored lindsey motley. last night lindsey's leap of faith at the new cancer survivor's park glowed with hundreds of candles. friends, family and supporters came out to remember the young greenville mother. as you may recall, lindsey had been battling colon cancer since she was 26. she was pregnant at the time of her diagnoses. now, her little girl will have a way to remember her mother. >> we want everybody in the community to write letters to lila to tell her what an amazing mother her mom was. she is not going to be able to remember a lot of these memories. she is going to have video, but we want everybody to tell her what lindsay meant to them. jay will be able to read those that will be an amazing gift. allyson: lindsay told her story publicly and encouraged others to be screened for the disease. she passed away tuesday night.

geoff: we are talking sports this morning. workouts b bin this morning in indianapolis at the nfl combine. ron rivera and the carolina panthers are in place in indianapolis. the panthers are actually a little behind on the scouting because of their super bowl run, but rivera said they are trying to get up to speed. he talked about what cam newton needs to do to take the next step as one of the nfl's ellie quarterback. -- elite quarterbacks. >> the biggest thing is kind of what he did last year. i know both groups will have a list. he will have his idea of what he needs to work on. both mike and kenny have a list of things they would like to see him in on and it worked last year. geoff: the panthers' general manager has drafted extremely well since coming to carolina. the panthers have the 30th pick

geoff: this is pretty interesting. in this morning's buzz. jetblue conducts a social experiment on a flight at a time in politics where it seems no one can agree on anything. allyson: they offered all 150 passengers a free round-trip ticket for a future flight to anywhere in the world the airline flies, but there is one catch. they had to work together and compromise to unanimously agree on one destination. if there wasn't a unanimous decision, they wouldn't get the free trip. using red and blue paddles, they narrowed down their options and it came down to turks and caicos or costa rica. >> turks and caicos? no hands in the air.
