dale: we can see some icy spots mountains. watch out for black ice. a winter weather advisory will be in effect until 7:00 this morning, especially along the tennessee and north carolina border. morning temperatures are at freezing from asheville to greenville. it is a little above it from laurens to greenwood. it feels colder with these breeze is blowing 40 miles per hour in the mountains and 5-10 miles per hour in the upstate. it will get up to 53 in the upstate this afternoon under mostst sunny skies. for western north carolina, we are struggling to reach the upper 40's by the end of the afternoon. better weather is coming this weekend, especially by sunday. we will talk about that in a few minutes. allyson: thank you, dale. many people are still without power this morning. geoff: there was a lot of work

a majority of those outages were in our area right now. in spartanburg county, they reported 500 without power. that is a lot less than yesterday, when it was close to 4000. wrinkle county have a little over 100 people without power. -- greenville county has a little over 100 people without power. wyff news 4's aly myles is live and local in greenville with some other concerns officials are having following the severe weather. aly: we are close to the post office right now. if you take a look behind me, even see where the road is shut down. according to duke energy, both the pole and powerline will need to be replaced. this is a result of the strong winds. duke energy says that because of the extent of the damage, it is taking longer to restore all of those outages. take a look at this video from

this is our paris mountain skycam. it fell victim to the winds. our engineers will be working to get it back up and running on west washington street. this will not be open until those repairs are made. no word yet on when that will happen. geoff: thank you. four people are dead and 14 others are hurt after a mass shooting in kansas. that shooting happened in south-central kansas. authorities say an excel industries worker stole a vehicle and shot people in the street and parking lot. >> he never came off to be a bad guy. he was someone i could talk to about anything. >> inside the building he shot a total of 15 people. four were killed, including himself. geoff: officials are telling us a first officer to arrive immediately engaged the gunman

the identities of the shooter and victims have not yet been released. allyson: turning to commitment 2016 now. all five republicans took the stage in houston for one final debate before super tuesday. geoff: at points, candidates yield over each other, a reflection of donald trump's momentum. >> i watched him meltdown on the stage like i have never seen anybody. >> let's talk about your plan. >> he says five things. everyone is dump. he is going to make america great again. >> for decades, donald trump has been advocating fofosocialized medicine. he said the government should pay for everyone's health care. a couple debates ago he said, if

but nevada was not a test state. it's a small state with a caucus. it doesn't count. this march 1 will be a big one in deciding how strong are the candidates in multiple states and is that traction going to carry them forward? allyson: right now, trump is leading by 13 points over ted cruz, according to real clear politics. he has a wider spread over marco rubio and john kasich. geoff: just one day out from the south carolina democratic primary. former president bill clinton was in the upstate yesterday. he stopped in at usc upstate for a get out the vote rally. he talked about the front runner from the other side of the aisle, donald trump. bill clinton: when one of the republicans says, but for me i will make america great again by putting up a wall and keeping the chinese products out and immigrants out. he is shooting at the wrong target. we haven't had any immigration from mexico since 2010. but nevermind, it sounds good. geoff: hillary clinton is in

rallies the four the primary. -- rallies before the primary. allyson: if you want to vote absentee, your time is running out. you have until 5:00 p.m. today. election offices will not stay open late. president obama has nominated two people to serve on the united states district court for the district of south carolina. both of them have upstate ties. one is donald beatty. he has been an associate justice on the south carolina supreme court since 2007. at one point he was a partner at a law firm in spartanburg. the other is donald coggins jr. he is a lawyer. he also worked for a law firm in spartanburg. he also serves as a member of the south carolina commission on lawyer conduct. geoff: some are still in the dark in the upstate. in the mountains, we are concerned about icy conditions. dale: watch out for black ice. whatever you have moisture that

allyson: this week's golden apple award winner wears a lot of hats at his school geoff: he sure does and his students love him for it. what kind of teacher lets a student play a instrument while driving a unicycle in his classroom? dick barns does. >> he is the best band teacher he will ever meet. geoff: 15 years at spartanburg day school. his relationship with his students is as harmonious as the sound of their instruments. >> i keep things light and fun

>> he is the most hilarious person i have met. geoff: humor plays a big part, teaching his students to play a mean straw. >> it is a great instrument. geoff: there are boardgames too. he owns more than 200 of them, hosting game nights at the school. and then there is this. a ballroom dance class for six graders. >> i never ballroom dance before. geoff: it is a tradition he agreed to continue that was near and dear to the former band director. the reason for all of those unicycles and the classroom? one of his students found out he has been writing one for years and encouraged him to -- found out he had been riding one for years and encouraged him to start an afterschool club.

piedmont. in laurens, we can see 35 in greenwood. just above freezing for a good bit of the piedmont area. temperatures feel colder when you add in the 20-25 mile-per-hour wind, or even 83-13. mile-per-hour wind it feels like 27 in greenville. it feels more like teens from hendersonville to asheville. yesterday we got up to 53. today we are looking at that again. the average is 59. we are a little cooler than normal. with the exception of the stormy day when it soared up to 70 degrees. the record of 80 degrees was set back in 1996. he asked -- the regional

our weather map shows snow being generated by the big storm that produced the severe weather across the south and of the coast. today is just producing snow, drawing on that cold air from the great lakes in canada. most of the country is pretty cool today and by the end of the day, we will see low 50's for the upstate and in the mountains, upper 30's to low 40's. here is our future plus forecast showing those flurries of snow until 9:00. it then tapers off before noon. that will be get for the next couple of days. we could see some showers next week, but those will just be rain showers. today, 53 for the upstate may be the best we do. the mountains will give way to sunshine and will reach 41 degrees right 2:00. tomorrow we have highs from 46 to 54. on sunday, we have low 60's in the upstate and upper 50's in

on tuesday. we have a better chance on wednesday of next week. allyson: thank you, dale. a bill to stop coal ash from being dumped in pickens county has been approved. now, it is on its way to governor haley for her signature. senators approved a house bill that prevents a landfill from being built in liberty. there were plans by a north carolina company to dump coal ash. the bill specifies that coal ash can only be dumped in class 3 landfills. the proposed landfill in liberty was going to be a class 2 landfill. that does not qualify for coal ash disposal. senator larry martin says the bill is "a big win" for the people of pickens county. geoff: while the debate continues over how to pay for road repairs in south carolina, the house committee approved a spending plan yesterday that provides 200 $87 million in road funding. the plan also sets aside 130

and $400 million of public education. allyson: the city of greenville has launched two mobile apps designed to make information interaction with the city more convenient. greenvillesc is the official city of greenville mobile app. the app provides information to citizens and visitors when they are on the go, such as special events and parking the second app, greenville zoo, gives users access to the greenville zoo anytime. guests can use the app to plan their visit and even view the giraffe cam. geoff: texting and driving is against the law. and some high school students got the opportunity to learn why outside the classroom. more than 200 crescent high students got to see first hand how dangerous it can be. they watched a video and put on goggles, that ushered them into virtual reality driving with slower response times. many of them said they didn't realize how hard it would be. >> it was hard. it was really hard. i would never text and drive or drink and drive. >> it definitely showed us like, this is real life. geoff: it is an offshoot of the alive at 25 program at crescent

before students can park on campus, they must first go through the national safety council's for an -- council's four adnd a half hour class on defensive driving. allyson: a pizza kitchen on wheels helped the spartanburg soup kitchen celebrate its 34th anniversary. little caesars pulled up and baked 120 pizzas in the parking lot yesterday. each guest also got a salad, chicken, and a drink. the spartanburg soup kitchen started in 1982 at the second presbyterian church. it runs without government assistance. it is open seven days a week. >> it makes me emotional sometimes. last week we had a couple who arrived here hungry and scared. they had come from another county. of course, we were through eating, but we were able to provide a meal for them. that is what makes it so wonderful. allyson: a woman who has been eating at the soup kitchen for 26 years told us she believes

in greenville, the community honored lindsey motley. faith at the new cancer survivor's park glowed with friends, family and supporters came out to remember the young greenville mother. as you may recall, lindsey had she was 26. she was pregnant at the time of her diagnoses. now, her little girl will have a way to remember her mother. >> we want everybody in the community to write letters to lila to tell her what an amazing woman her mom was. she won't be able to remember these memories. she will have video, but we want everyone to tell her what lindsey meant to them and how she inspired them. jay will be able to read those to her throughout her life and that is going to be an amazing gift. allyson: lindsey told her story publicly and encouraged others to be screened for the disease. she passed away tuesday night will stop lindsey was 29-years-old.

in this morning's plus, one of the biggest soccer players comes through for a fan. allyson: that is right. murtaza, a 5-year-old from afghanistan, was photographed wearing a lionel messi shirt made of a plastic bag. it went viral online. messi sent him two autographed shirts and a signed football. or a soccer ball for us. the boys father says it was it was one of the happiest moments of his son's life. when the 5-year-old was asked about becoming an internet sensation, he said the whole world knows me now. geoff: fantastic. allyson: i wish we had the picture of him in bishop before that was the garbage bag he cut up. your news continues right now.
